Book Early Childhood Assessment

Download or read book Early Childhood Assessment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-12-21 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment of young children's development and learning has recently taken on new importance. Private and government organizations are developing programs to enhance the school readiness of all young children, especially children from economically disadvantaged homes and communities and children with special needs. Well-planned and effective assessment can inform teaching and program improvement, and contribute to better outcomes for children. This book affirms that assessments can make crucial contributions to the improvement of children's well-being, but only if they are well designed, implemented effectively, developed in the context of systematic planning, and are interpreted and used appropriately. Otherwise, assessment of children and programs can have negative consequences for both. The value of assessments therefore requires fundamental attention to their purpose and the design of the larger systems in which they are used. Early Childhood Assessment addresses these issues by identifying the important outcomes for children from birth to age 5 and the quality and purposes of different techniques and instruments for developmental assessments.

Book First Steps for Early Success

Download or read book First Steps for Early Success written by Christine Johnson-Staub and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young children's development occurs along a continuum, with milestones reached at ages that vary within an accepted timeframe. Milestones not met within the expected timeframe can raise concerns about developmental delays, health conditions, or other factors contributing negatively to the child's growth and learning. Monitoring children's development in relation to this continuum through developmental screening, to identify delays, and to individualize approaches to development and learning, is an important part of providing high-quality child care and early education. Developmental screenings, which indicate whether a child is meeting expected developmental milestones or may have a developmental delay that requires further assessment, are part of a broader set of preventive health care practices recommended by experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Early, regular, and reliable screening can help identify problems or potential problems that may threaten the child's developmental foundation and lead to additional delays and deficits later in childhood. Properly trained and supported professionals in early childhood settings can use information from screening to help inform practice, shape individual child interactions, and refer children and families for additional services. This paper looks at the degree to which children currently receive developmental screening, the role of child care and early education programs in connecting children to developmental screening, national efforts and funding streams to support developmental screening and its relationship to early childhood, and state policy examples and recommendations stakeholders can draw on when considering expanding access to developmental screening in early childhood settings.

Download or read book America s Children written by Institute of Medicine and National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-10-27 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's Children is a comprehensive, easy-to-read analysis of the relationship between health insurance and access to care. The book addresses three broad questions: How is children's health care currently financed? Does insurance equal access to care? How should the nation address the health needs of this vulnerable population? America's Children explores the changing role of Medicaid under managed care; state-initiated and private sector children's insurance programs; specific effects of insurance status on the care children receive; and the impact of chronic medical conditions and special health care needs. It also examines the status of "safety net" health providers, including community health centers, children's hospitals, school-based health centers, and others and reviews the changing patterns of coverage and tax policy options to increase coverage of private-sector, employer-based health insurance. In response to growing public concerns about uninsured children, last year Congress voted to provide $24 billion over five years for new state insurance initiatives. This volume will serve as a primer for concerned federal policymakers and regulators, state agency officials, health plan decisionmakers, health care providers, children's health advocates, and researchers.

Book Early Childhood Developmental Screenings

Download or read book Early Childhood Developmental Screenings written by Danielle J. Jennings and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Developmental screening programs identify young children with delayed skill growth or challenging behaviors and refer them to community agencies for evaluation or other services. This research studied the predictive impact of developmental screening results and child and family characteristics on the completion of these referrals for evaluation. A retrospective review of records tracked the status of a cross-section of children receiving referrals to determine which types of screening results and child and family characteristics lead to children receiving recommended evaluations. Records of 138 young children up to five years old who received a referral for evaluation from the community developmental screening program held in Tallahassee, Florida, between April, 2010, and April, 2011, were reviewed for inclusion in this study. Demographic variables, screening results and referral completion rates were collected during a retrospective review of child screening records and agency client records. Data from child records and referral agencies were used to examine statistical relationships between child screening results, child and family characteristics, and referral completion using logistical and hierarchical logistic regression analysis to determine the significance of variables to predict referral completion. Number of concerns was most significant in predicting referral completion outcomes. Referrals with health concerns or social-emotional concerns in screening results were predictive of no completion. The most significant child and family factors related to referral completion were child gender and race. White females completed significantly more screening referrals than other child demographic profiles.

Book Early Identification of Children at Risk

Download or read book Early Identification of Children at Risk written by R.N. Emde and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains contributions that are interdisciplinary and inter national. The editors believe this is an especially timely and promising enterprise, for both sources of diversity are needed for improving our abilities to identify the young child at risk and to prevent disability. In terms of diSciplines, the volume brings together papers by health care providers (such as pediatricians and public health nurses) as well as educators and psychologists. Each of these groups works in dissimilar settings and faces dissimilar problems: Health care providers seek sim ple identification procedures for use in busy primary care settings; psy chologists emphasize well-constructed research designs; and educators reflect the need for early identification and education. Each of these spe cialist groups has something to offer the other, but too often each tends to limit its publications and readings to its own discipline, thus failing to capitalize on a wider scope. of knowledge and practice. We hope that this selection of papers will allow all readers addressing the early iden tification of children at risk to generate a more integrated interdiscipli nary perspective. We also hope this volume reflects the sense of excitement that we feel from a sharing of international perspectives. There is no single ap proach to the early identification of children at risk that is universally applicable to all countries. In addition, approaches within each country vary because of availability of financial and human resources and dif fering expectations of local communities.

Book Screening and Assessment

Download or read book Screening and Assessment written by Samuel J. Meisels and published by Zero to Three. This book was released on 1989 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this document is to suggest guidelines for the identification and assessment of children who should participate in programs related to the infant-toddler (Part H) and the preschool (Part B, Section 619) components of Public Law 99-457, the Education of the Handicapped Amendments of 1986. The guidelines integrate information from the fields of medicine, health care, social services, psychology, and education and describe practices to advance the field of early intervention and improve services to children and families. The document first describes the requirements of Public Law 99-457 regarding screening and assessment. A theoretical viewpoint about childhood development is presented, and the differences between screening and assessment are outlined. The complex factors involved in defining the population to be served by Public Law 99-457 are noted, and guidelines for screening and assessing young disabled and developmentally vulnerable children are then proposed. A sequenced planning process is outlined and future tasks are listed. Appendices are attached that contain illustrations of several different models, representative lists of screening and assessment instruments and procedures, a glossary, and regulations from Public Law 94-142 and Public Law 99-457 that pertain to screening and assessment. Includes 79 references. (JDD)

Book Universal screening of young children for developmental disorders

Download or read book Universal screening of young children for developmental disorders written by Ina Wallace and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, American and Canadian pediatric societies have recommended that pediatric care clinicians follow a schedule of routine surveillance and screening for young children to detect conditions such as developmental delay, speech and language delays and disorders, and autism spectrum disorder. The goal of these recommendations is to ensure that children with these developmental issues receive appropriate referrals for evaluation and intervention. However, in 2015 and 2016, the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care issued recommendations that did not support universal screening for these conditions. This occasional paper is designed to help make sense of the discrepancy between Task Force recommendations and those of the pediatric community in light of research and practice. To clarify the issues, this paper reviews the distinction between screening and surveillance; the benefits of screening and early identification; how the USPSTF makes its recommendations; and what the implications of not supporting screening are for research, clinical practice, and families.
