Book History of Cayuga County New York

Download or read book History of Cayuga County New York written by Cayuga County Historical Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Cayuga County, New York: Compiled From Papers in the Archives of the Cayuga County Historical Society, With Special Chapters by Local Authors, From 1775 to 1908 The History of Cayuga County is as interesting as that of any other county in the state. It is rich and teeming with events of Indian days and the pioneer period, the records of which should be read with the keenest interest by all who are to-day enjoying the fruits of the sacrifices and achievements of the early settlers. In this volume an effort has been made to give an accurate account of the important events and incidents of the early years, and to perpetuate in print the legacies of lips now silent, in well authenticated traditions and stories of local interest. For the records of the past much valuable information has been gleaned from the papers of careful writers, in the archives of the Cayuga County Historical Society, and this has been fortified and supplemented by the assistance of able contemporary writers. We gratefully acknowledge the valuable aid of many lovers of historical literature; particularly are we indebted to Prof. Willis J. Beecher, D. D., for his admirable history of the Auburn Theological Seminary; to Lavern A. Pierce, Esq., for his exhaustive history of the bench and bar of the county; to Dr. B. I. C. Buckland for the chapter on the medical profession, and to Dr. William S. Cheeseman, editor of the same; also to Hon. B. B. Snow, for his valuable suggestions and painstaking revision of the history of Auburn; to Mr. Charles F. Rattigan, who edited the press chapter; to Gen. John S. Clark for valuable advice, and to the various pastors, for information relating to the history of their several churches. The publishers have given their personal attention to the supervision of the work, yet With a consciousness that the greatest vigilance cannot wholly exclude errors, this volume is. Book excerpt: Between 1950 and 1953, nearly 30,000 Canadian volunteers joined the effort to contain communist incursions into South Korea and support the fledgling United Nations. All the services were there and all served with distinction. The Royal Canadian Navy led a daring rescue of troops from the port of Chinnampo in 1950; members of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry won the highest US battle honour at Kap’yong in April 1951; the Vandoos turned the tide at Hill 355; and twice – at Hill 355 in October 1952 and Hill 187 in May 1953 – members of the Royal Canadian Regiment held firm against forces that greatly outnumbered them. The navy and the infantry were bolstered by the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery and Lord Strathcona’s Horse tanks, as well as members of the service, medical, engineers, provost, chaplain and intelligence corps. Still more, from the RCAF Thunderbird Squadron, took part in the Korean Airlift – three years of non-stop supply flights across the Pacific.

Book excerpt: Levanna was a famous and well-visited archaeological site in central New York, along the eastern side of Cayuga Lake, during the Great Depression. It was primarily known for its spectacular animal effigies. But were they real or forgeries? Jack Rossen takes us on a journey through the 1920s and 1930s, the era of an outdoor museum, and professional attempts by the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) to suppress it. Larger than life characters include Arthur C. Parker, future President of the SAA, William A. Ritchie, future State Archaeologist of New York, and Harrison C. Follett, the entrepreneurial archaeologist. The book also takes us through the 2007-2009 re-excavation of Levanna and the related 2011-2014 excavations at the Myers Farm site. Along the way, Cayuga history is reinterpreted as more peaceful than previously believed, and the case is made for a Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy more than one thousand years old. An older confederacy is more in line with oral traditions than previous archaeological ideas of a brief confederacy that began either just before or after European contact. The work was conducted through the framework of indigenous collaborative archaeology with leaders of the Cayuga and Haudenosaunee Confederacy. The narrative approach includes stories of the contemporary people, both Native and non-Native, who protected the site, supported the research, and provided ideas, wisdom, inspiration, and friendship.

Book excerpt: Ithaca, New York has often been called the Hollywood of the East, growing from farms to factories to Cornell University--Ithaca's history is an interesting and broad one. Nestled in the heart of the Finger Lakes, Ithaca was planned by surveyor Simeon DeWitt and incorporated in 1821 when steamboats signaled Cayuga Lake's heyday of commerce and recreation. Spectacular creeks and waterfalls powered grist, plaster, carding, and other mills. From farms, merchants, and mills, Ithaca's industries grew to include the famous Thomas-Morse Aviation Company and Morse Chain Works. By 1914, Wharton Studios was producing silent films in this Hollywood of the East. Such notable residents as actress Irene Castle, the Tremans, and community leader James L. Gibbs called Ithaca home. Ithacans became known for community involvement early on. St. James AME Zion Church served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, and Elizabeth Beebe built a mission for needy Rhiners. Ezra Cornell and Andrew D. White realized their ideal of education when Cornell University opened in 1868, followed in 1892 by the Ithaca Conservatory of Music, which became Ithaca College in 1931. Students protested segregation in front of Woolworth's 30 years later, and echoes of this idealism can still be found here today.
