Book excerpt: The research question of this dissertation is whether the early Cantonese-English contact provides a phonological basis to the development of Hong Kong English (HKE henceforth). The dissertation provides an affirmative answer by studying four Cantonese-English bilingual dictionaries in the mid 19th and early 20th centuries. The empirical evidence from the four bilingual dictionaries reveals three types of phenomena: inheritance, stabilization, and deviation. The phenomenon of inheritance refers to the phonological features discovered in the early Cantonese-English contact that have persisted in modern HKE. The phenomenon of stabilization includes the phonological features of the early Cantonese-English contact that are fortified and regularized in modern HKE. The phenomenon of deviation indicates certain phonological features of the early Cantonese-English contact differ from those of modern HKE. The findings of the dissertation fill two research gaps in the literature of HKE. One research gap is the omission of the English acquisition patterns for average Hongkongers before mass English-language education was implemented in the 1970s. For the Hongkongers who had no access to formal schools, the Cantonese-English bilingual dictionaries were used as the learning materials in self-study or private schools. The other research gap is the lack of a historical perspective into the variations of modern HKE phonology. Most of the studies on HKE are synchronic in nature and fail to realize that the variations may be derived from the two different English acquisition patterns in history. This dissertation reveals that the phonology of the functional bilinguals in HKE (the HKE speakers who could use English for various formal and informal needs) might be influenced by the phonological features of inheritance and stabilization discovered in the early Cantonese-English contact. The findings establish the historical connections behind modern HKE phonology, enhancing the recognition of HKE as an autonomous New English Variety. This enables HKE to be the symbol of solidarity for Hongkongers. This dissertation investigates the historical data from the Cantonese-English bilingual dictionaries that remain largely unstudied for a long time. Transformed into a retrievable dataset, the historical data can be used for linguistic theorizing.

First I will present a general view of the language situation in Hong Kong. Then in the third chapter some of the main phonological variations existing in Hong Kong English will be presented. In a further step, I will analyze if these variations can be found in two interviews with Hong Kong-born actor Jackie Chan who has lived and worked several years in the United States and examine how they differ from Standard English, before summing up the results in the conclusion. Hong Kong came under British control as a result of the Opium Wars with China from 1839 to 1842 and from 1856 to 1860 and developed since then as a trading centre. Throughout the British colonial period from 1842 to 1997 a minority of British administrators and traders co-existed with a large majority of Chinese traders and laborers. Since most Chinese could speak Cantonese, there was no need for a lingua franca, but only for a language to use with influential foreigners (Melchers 163). Therefore the knowledge of English was spread almost entirely through the education system, which increasingly used English as a medium (ibid.). In 1997 Hong Kong was returned to Chinese sovereignty. Today, English is very widely used in the educational and legal system and for dealing with international business partners (ibid. 164). Moreover, English is becoming 'localized' and is used to some extend for everyday interaction among locals who all speak Cantonese (ibid.). Nevertheless, the English spoken in Hong Kong differs in regard to grammar, lexis and phonological aspects from Standard English as Received Pronunciation (RP) or General American (GA)."

Starting from kindergarten, students in Hong Kong learn Chinese and English words and attain bilingual literacy in this way. However, this type of learning results in low levels of both Cantonese (L1) and English (L2) phonological awareness (PA). Phonological awareness is not only significant for emergent literacy in an alphabetic language but also for decoding unfamiliar words. For this reason, Hong Kong students have difficulty learning to read English (especially sounding out and spelling unfamiliar words). Meanwhile, Chinese readers in mainland China and other places who learn to read Chinese with a phonetic script are found to have higher phonological awareness of Chinese (Bertelson, Chen & de Gelder, 1997; H. Cheung et al., 2001; Holm & Dodd, 1996; Huang & Hanley, 1995; Read et al., 1986). In light of the advantage brought about by a native phonetic script, the present research aims to investigate the effect of Cantonese phonological awareness on English learning by comparing the performances of an Experimental Group with phonological awareness training and a Control Group without training, both before and after training. Two experiments were conducted from 2003 to 2004. In the pilot experiment, the Experimental Group (n = 8) which had received 10 hours of Cantonese Romanisation instruction had no immediate advantage over the control group (n = 9) concerning their post-training English phonological awareness test. However, after the two groups had received 10 hours of English phonics instruction, the Experimental Group a made significantly bigger mean progress than the Control Group (p = 0.035) in their post-training English phonological awareness test. In the main experiment, the Experimental Group (n = 19) which had received 20 hours of Cantonese Romanisation instruction made a bigger mean progress than Control Group 1 (n = 20) and Control Group 2 (n = 17) together (p = 0.020). After the Experimental Group and Control Group 1 had received 20 hours of English phonics instruction, the former no longer seemed to have an edge over the latter. Despite some inconsistency of the findings, both experiments confirmed that Cantonese Romanisation instruction had a positive effect on English phonological awareness, be it a greater or a lesser extent compared with English phonics instruction. The findings from this research are consistent with previous findings on Hanyu Pinyin: (1) phonological awareness is trainable through native phonological awareness training, and (2) the improved native phonological awareness can transfer to a second language. In addition, this research also shows that Cantonese Romanisation instruction helps Hong Kong children learn English phonics more effectively. This is also consistent with Mok (2001) who showed the positive effect of Cantonese Romanisation instruction on the learning of Hanyu Pinyin.
