Book Early Voyages to California

Download or read book Early Voyages to California written by and published by . This book was released on 1874 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albert Peabody (1806-1879) and John Eagleston were Salem, Massachusetts merchants who sailed to California in the last months of 1848 to exploit the market for Eastern goods among the miners. Early voyages to California (1874) reprints two pieces from the Historical Collections of the Essex Institute. In the first, Peabody describes his December 1848 sailing with a cargo of foodstuffs and mining tools for the California gold camps, where he remained until 1851. Highlights include a voyage round the Horn and business life in San Francisco and Sacramento. In the second, Eagleston recounts his voyage in October 1848 and his brief stay in San Francisco to sell his cargo before returning east in the summer of 1849.

Download or read book Notes of a Voyage to California Via Cape Horn written by Samuel Curtis Upham and published by . This book was released on 1878 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Curtis Upham (1819-1885) was a clerk in a Philadelphia merchant house when he decided to try his luck in California in January, 1849. Sailing round the Horn, he visited Rio de Janeiro and Talcahuana before landing in San Francisco. After a brief career as a gold miner at the Calaveras diggings, Upham moved to Sacramento, where he published the Sacramento Transcript, May-August 1850. Notes of a voyage to California (1878) includes Upham's memoirs of his early years in California, with special attention to Sacramento's colorful history in 1850. He closes his narrative with a brief description of his return to Philadelphia that same year via Panama. The book's lengthy appendix contains chapters on California journalism, the California exhibition at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition, and various reunion dinners and other events sponsored by the California "Pioneers" association.

Book A Voyage to California the Sandwich Islands and Around the World in the Years 1826 1829

Download or read book A Voyage to California the Sandwich Islands and Around the World in the Years 1826 1829 written by Auguste Duhaut-Cilly and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While French sea captain Auguste Duhaut-Cilly may not have become wealthy from his around-the-world travels between 1826 and 1829, his trip has enriched historians interested in early nineteenth-century California. Because of a poor choice in goods to trade he found it necessary to spend nearly two years on the Alta and Baja California coasts before disposing of his cargo and returning to France. What was bad luck for Duhaut-Cilly was good luck for us, however, because he recorded his impressions of the region's natural history and human populations in a diary. This translation of Duhaut-Cilly's writing offers today's readers a rare eyewitness account of the pastoral society that was Mexican California, including the missions at the height of their power. A veteran of the Napoleonic wars, Duhaut-Cilly was an educated man conversant in Spanish and English. He was also Catholic, which gave him special access to the California missions. Thus his diary allows the reader an insider's view of the padres' lives, including their dealings with the military. Through his eyes we see the region's indigenous people and how they were treated, and we're privy to his commentary on the behavior of the Californios. This translation also contains Duhaut-Cilly's account of the Sandwich Islands portion of his voyage and provides an authentic rendering of life at sea during the early nineteenth century. In the spirit of Richard Henry Dana's Two Years before the Mast, Duhaut-Cilly's reflections are a historical gem for anyone with a love of personal narratives and original accounts of the past.

Book Round Cape Horn

Download or read book Round Cape Horn written by Joseph Lamson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1878 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A voyage round Cape Horn in a passenger-ship is an event of the past. The necessity for performing this perilous voyage has been obviated by the introduction of railroads and steamships. Emigrants and travelers are no longer obliged to risk their lives and waste their time in passing round the Stormy Cape in order to arrive at a point, which may be reached in a week by a pleasant ride across the continent on the railroad; and Cape Horn is destined to become a terra incognita to all but the readers of ancient voyages. I am not aware that a narrative of a voyage of this description has ever been published; and the hope that a truthful account of the perils, discomforts, and annoyances, as well as the pleasures and enjoyments attending it, may prove entertaining to the reader, has prompted me to send forth this little work to meet the fate or fortune which an enlightened public may award it. The scenes and anecdotes recorded at the end of the voyage, are given in the hope that they may possess some slight value as conveying an idea-a vague and indistinct one, perhaps-of some of the characteristics and habits of a portion of the people of California in early times.
