Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bryophytes were a pivotal step in land plant evolution, and their significance in the regulation of ecosystems and the conservation of biodiversity is becoming increasingly acknowledged. This introductory textbook assumes no prior knowledge of bryophyte biology, making it ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as amateur botanists. The authors expertly summarise the diversity of bryophytes and outline recent advances in our understanding of their evolutionary history, their ecological roles and preferences, their distribution patterns and conservation needs. The text is highly illustrated throughout, with boxed summaries of topics of current relevance in bryophyte biology, and a glossary of technical terms.

Book Heavy Metal Tolerance in Plants

Download or read book Heavy Metal Tolerance in Plants written by Jonathan Shaw and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a synthesis of recent work on evolutionary aspects of metal tolerance in plants. It presents contributions from scientists with a wide diversity of expertise. It covers the evolution of heavy metal tolerance in groups of plants, fungi, and protists. The book discusses the physiological, genetic and molecular aspects of metal tolerances. It deals with the evolution of populations in metal-contaminated environments. Several chapters include tolerance in animals in order to place the rest of the book on plants in proper perspective. This publication is an exciting addition for scientists with both applied and basic interest in metal toxicity and tolerance. It is of importance to those in vegetation ecology, land reclamation, agronomy, physiology, population ecology, ecological genetics, evolutionary biology and molecular biology.

Download or read book Introduction to Bryology written by W. B. Schofield and published by New York : Macmillan ; London : Collier Macmillan. This book was released on 1985 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated text/reference, originally printed in 1985, provides a comprehensive introduction to the structure, evolution and interrelationships of the bryophytes. Leading bryologist W. B. Schofield gives a broad, international view of bryology that goes beyond a basic understanding of structure to present the bryophytes as a vital group of living plants. After a solid foundation in the morphology of mosses, liverworts and hornworts separate chapters, organized to allow easy comparison of the evolutionary lines, offer definitive information on the biology of the organisms. Topics covered in detail include cytology, genetics, chemistry, ecology, physiology, geography and the history of the discipline. Emphasizing the biologic significance of the bryophytes, the author uses an abundance of elegant original illustrations to show the structure, diversity and the natural beauty of the bryophytes. There is also an extensive glossary of bryologic terminology. W. B. Schofield is Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He is a former president of the American Bryological and Lichenological Society.

Book excerpt: A long-awaited addition to the botany titles in the highly-regarded Collins New Naturalist series. This edition is exclusive to newnaturalists.com Mosses and liverworts - known as bryophytes - are a group of about 24,000 fairly low-growing plants which have no roots to speak of. Nor do they have flowers, but breed instead by spores. Both are commonly found in damp places, like ditches and beside streams. This authoritative guide explains their ecological importance, how they can act as environmental indicators and their general biology. With full-colour illustrations throughout, it covers: * distribution patterns and dispersal mechanisms * their relation with climate * historical uses for mosses * habitats and emmunities This is a branch of botany which has always relied heavily on amateur involvement, and the authors explain what amateurs can do today to increase our knowledge about these essential plants.

Book Chemical Constituents of Bryophytes

Download or read book Chemical Constituents of Bryophytes written by Yoshinori Asakawa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some 50 years, Professor Asakawa and his group have focused their research on the chemical constituents of bryophytes and have found that these plants contain large numbers of secondary metabolites, such as terpenoids, acetogenins, and aromatic compounds representative of many new skeletons, which exhibit interesting biological activities. Individual terpenoids, when found as constituents of both a bryophyte and a higher plant, tend to occur in different enantiomeric forms. Professor Asakawa has covered the literature on bryophytes in two earlier volumes of Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Products, namely, Volumes 42 (1982) and 65 (1995). Since the publication of the latter volume, a great deal of new information has appeared on bryophytes. One example is that known sex pheromones of algae have been discovered in two liverworts, indicating that some members of the latter taxonomic group might originate from brown algae. From information provided in this volume, it is suggested that two orders of the Marchantiophyta should be combined.
