Book A Culinary History of Cape May Salt Oysters Beach Plums Cabernet Franc

Download or read book A Culinary History of Cape May Salt Oysters Beach Plums Cabernet Franc written by John Howard-Fusco and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author John Howard-Fusco traces the roots of Cape May's delectable dishes and recipes from long ago to the modern day. Cape May is America's first seaside resort, and with that comes a mouthwatering food history. The New York Times even proclaimed the city "Restaurant Capital of New Jersey." The first settlers, the Kechemeche of the Lenape tribe, feasted on the fish and wild game in the area. The whaling industry briefly brought attention to the island, but Ellis Hughes's 1801 advertisement offering seashore entertainment with "fish, oysters, crabs, and good liquors" gave birth to a beachside haven. From the mint juleps to the Sunny Hall Café and the Chalfonte, culinary creativity thrives on the shore. Modern chefs like Lucas Manteca at the Red Store and Brooke Dodds's Empanada Mamas help keep the unique flair alive.

Download or read book The Legend of the Cape May Diamond written by Trinka Hakes Noble and published by Sleeping Bear Press. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the southernmost tip of New Jersey lie the resort town of Cape May and its sparkling sandy beaches, sheltering the Delaware Bay. Formed by melting glaciers thousands of years past, the Delaware River flows from its headwaters to spill into the Delaware Bay. And for thousands of years, fragments of quartz rock have ridden the river, plucked from the mountains lining its banks. Polished and buffed as they tumble along, these rock particles dazzle like gemstones when tossed onto Cape May's sandy shores. Beloved by beachcombers, these "diamonds" are the daughters of the river, linking the state's past and present. Delving into the natural beauty of New Jersey's famous coastline, storyteller Trinka Hakes Noble has crafted a wondrous tale explaining the origin of the Cape May Diamond.Trinka Hakes Noble's award-winning picture books include The Last Brother, The Scarlet Stockings Spy (an IRATeachers' Choice, 2005), and the popular Jimmy's Boa series. • Pages : 380 pages

Download or read book Cape May County New Jersey written by Jeffery M. Dorwart and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New settlements appeared in the pine wilderness of the mainland and on the uninhabited Atlantic Ocean barrier islands. These changes caused social and political conflicts, and new development assaulted the fragile seashore environment. Fishing and shipbuilding were key industries throughout the early history of Cape May County. In addition, familiar industries such as cranberry harvesting and nearly forgotten endeavors such as goldbeating, sugar refining, and cedar shingle mining played vital roles in the county's economic development. Dorwart also traces the origins of the seashore resort industry through the history of the city of Cape May, with its unique architectural styles and heritage, as well as the founding of Wildwood, Ocean City, and the newer resort towns.

Book Legendary Locals of the Pine Barrens of New Jersey

Download or read book Legendary Locals of the Pine Barrens of New Jersey written by Karen F. Riley and Andrew Gioulis, Foreword by Peter H. Stemmer and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our country's first national reserve, the Pine Barrens, harbors a wonderful secret unknown to most outsiders. This 1.1-million-acre treasure trove of pitch pine and sugar sand is home to many rare species and almost 17 trillion gallons of the purest water on earth. It was in this forest that men like Leland Champion logged trees and built sawmills. It was along these waterways that craftsmen like Gary Giberson made prized decoys. And it was in these woods that Stanley Switlik built a tower from which Amelia Earhart jumped, testing his parachute so it could be used in World War II. These woods yielded inventors whose products we enjoy today: cultivated blueberries, cranberry sauce, and Welch's grape juice. It was here that Bob Buchanan reached for the mooring lines as the Hindenburg ended its final, fated voyage. And it was here in Buzby's General Store that John McPhee penned his classic book, The Pine Barrens, setting into motion legislation to preserve this area for future generations.

Book excerpt: The founder of Sea Isle City, Charles K. Landis, was a man of action. He had a dream of what the ideal seashore resort should be. In the 1870s, his dream began to take shape. It has been said, "Each age is a dream that is dying or a dream that is coming to life." This is the fascinating story of how Sea Isle City, located along the New Jersey coast in Cape May County, evolved. Sea Isle City is a pictorial tour of the founding and early history of this resort by the sea. Almost overnight the island town became accessible by railroad and by turnpike. Hotels and cottages appeared throughout the island. The Braca, Busch, Cronecker, Dever, Kehner, Pfieffer, and Rey families played a vital role in the growth of the town. Another family, the Hafferts, formed the Garden State Publishing Company, which contributed significantly to employment and economic stability. Commercial fishing became an important industry in the development of the town with the coming of the "Hatmen" at the beginning of the twentieth century. The influential people who shaped the community and countless other families, schoolchildren, and local legends are finally brought together in Sea Isle City.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upper Township (after being known as the Upper Precinct of Cape May County since 1723) was founded in 1798 by John Townsend, but actually, the area was first inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Indians, who lived there and hunted in the rivers and woods for food for hundreds of years. The area grew as people from New York, northern New Jersey, and other outlying areas came to the region for its rich land and natural resources. Whaling, shipbuilding, and farming became the principal jobs. They brought their cultures and religions with them (Quakers, Baptists, Methodists, and Presbyterians), and gradually, an area of just a few villages developed into a larger township with 10 different villages. The 2010 census listed the population at 12,373 over an area of nearly 69 square miles. Residents and visitors can avail themselves of a variety of historic sites such as the Tuckahoe Train Station (1894), the Gandy Farmhouse (1815), and the restored Friendship School (1830s). In addition, there are many activities available both on land and on the Tuckahoe River, as well as the pristine beaches of Strathmere.
