Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces archaeology's contribution to Islamic culture from its earliest manifestations to the present This introduction to the archaeology of the Islamic world traces the history of the discipline from its earliest manifestations through to the present and evaluates the contribution made by archaeology to the understanding of key aspects of Islamic culture. The author argues that it is essential for the results of archaeological research to be more fully integrated into the wider historical study of the Islamic world. His organisation of the book into broad themes allows a focus on issues that are relevant across different regions and periods, and the broad geographical scope reflects the main focus of archaeological work in the Islamic world to the present day. Key Features Includes short case studies to allow the reader to examine the ways in which archaeologists collect and interpret material in specific contexts Considers archaeological work conducted in the area stretching from Afghanistan and the Central Asian republics in the east to Spain in the west Draws comparisons with Islamic regions of sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian subcontinent Includes a Glossary of archaeological terminology and Arabic, Persian and Turkish terms

Book Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean World

Download or read book Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean World written by Jelle Bruning and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period 500–1000 CE Egypt was successively part of the Byzantine, Persian and Islamic empires. All kinds of events, developments and processes occurred that would greatly affect its history and that of the eastern Mediterranean in general. This is the first volume to map Egypt's position in the Mediterranean during this period. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines, the individual chapters detail its connections with imperial and scholarly centres, its role in cross-regional trade networks, and its participation in Mediterranean and Near Eastern cultural developments, including their impact on its own literary and material production. With unparalleled detail, the book tracks the mechanisms and structures through which Egypt connected politically, economically and culturally to the world surrounding it.

Book The History of al abar Vol 18

Download or read book The History of al abar Vol 18 written by and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents for the first time in English Ṭabarī's complete account of the twenty-year long reign of the fifth caliph, Muʿāwiyah (661-680). The importance of this account lies partly in Ṭabarī's quotation of major portions of the work of earlier authors, such as Abu Mikhnaf and other eighth-century compilers. It is also significant because Ṭabarī's selection of themes has had a decisive influence on modern interpretations of this period, particularly on the identification of what the important issues were in the works of Henri Lammens and Julius Wellhausen. Here one can read the exciting account of the Khāriji revolt of Mustawrid ibn Ullifah, the impressive but controversial record of the governorship of Ziyād ibn Abīhi, the entertaining escapades of the poet Farazdaq in his youth, and the tragic story of Ḥujr ibn 'Adī. Ṭabarī''s presentation of different points of view about these and other events makes his account an indispensable source for early Islamic history.

Book Byzantine Trade 4th 12th Centuries

Download or read book Byzantine Trade 4th 12th Centuries written by Marlia Mundell Mango and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 28 papers examine questions relating to the extent and nature of Byzantine trade from Late Antiquity into the Middle Ages. The Byzantine state was the only political entity of the Mediterranean to survive Antiquity and thus offers a theoretical standard against which to measure diachronic and regional changes in trading practices within the area and beyond. To complement previous extensive work on late antique long-distance trade within the Mediterranean (based on the grain supply, amphorae and fine ware circulation), the papers concentrate on local and international trade. The emphasis is on recently uncovered or studied archaeological evidence relating to key topics. These include local retail organisation within the city, some regional markets within the empire, the production and/or circulation patterns of particular goods (metalware, ivory and bone, glass, pottery), and objects of international trade, both exports such as wine and glass, imports such as materia medica, and the lack of importation of, for example, Sasanian pottery. In particular, new work relating to specific regions of Byzantium's international trade is highlighted: in Britain, the Levant, the Red Sea, the Black Sea and China. Papers of the 38th Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies, held in 2004 at Oxford under the auspices of the Committee for Byzantine Studies.
