Book Early Agriculture in the Atlantic Provinces

Download or read book Early Agriculture in the Atlantic Provinces written by Howard Trueman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Agriculture in the Atlantic Provinces Agriculture is the greatest of Canadian industries. It is the one also which is most rapidly expanding. In the Statistical Year Book of Canada the metallic products are valued at $25,1-83,876 for the year 1901. If we add to these the abrasives, fuel pigments, structural machines, etc., we reach a total product from the earth of less than 50 millions of dollars. The products of our cheese factories amount to $29,462,404, to which must be added $7,000,000 for home made cheese, a number far in excess of the metallic products of our mines. Eggs alone reach the enormous value of 884,132,000. The Canadian hen has therefore good reason for her noisy self-congratulation when she adds to this great national product. The patient cow, however, surpasses the hen, for the home made butter of Canada is valued at over $105,000,000 per year. Still more striking figures can he quoted which make the total annual value of the gold, silver and iron mines seem almost insignificant. The crops raised and sold have a value equal to $208,417,821 and the live stock $154,708,563, making a total of over 363 millions of dollars. The Cobalt of the farm is greater than the Cobalt of the mine. It is well, therefore, that this history of our leading industry should be written, for like all histories it must have its lessons for the present and the future. New methods are being proposed and new explanations are being given. We can adopt and use these more safely when we know what the history of agricultural methods have been. This volume will show that some of the methods which scientific men and enlightened governments are seeking to make universal, are supported by the best practice of high class farmers many years ago. The growth of knowledge as to the principles on which these methods are based will do much to bring the best methods into common use. Dr. Saunders, the accomplished Director of Dominion Experimental Farms, in a paper read before the last meeting of the Royal Society of Canada, stated that it required more brains to be a first class farmer than an equally good man in any other profession. Book The Atlantic Provinces in Confederation

Download or read book The Atlantic Provinces in Confederation written by Ernest R. Forbes and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1993-12-15 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada's four easternmost provinces, while richly diverse in character and history, share many elements of their political and economic experience within Confederation. In this volume thirteen leading historians explore the shifting tides of Atlantic Canada's history, beginning with the union of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick with Ontario and Quebec to form the Dominion in 1867. Continuing on through Prince Edward Island's entry into Confederation six years later and Newfoundland's in 1949, they take the story of Atlantic Canada up to the 1980s. Collectively their work sheds light on the complex political dynamic between the region and Ottawa and reveals the roots of current social and economic realities. Fragmentation versus integration, plenty versus scarcity, centre versus periphery, and other models inform their analysis. The development of regional disparity, and responses to it, form a major theme. The tradition of regional protest by Maritimers, and later Atlantic Canadians, runs deep; so does their commitment to the idea of an integrated Canadian nation. Protests, over the decades, have primarily been expressions of frustration at perceived exclusion from the full benefits of national union. The creation of national markets for labour, capital, and goods often operated to their detriment, and political decisions at the national level frequently reinforced rather than alleviated the regional predicament. More than an account of the wealthy and powerful, this book often places ordinary men and women at the centre of the story. Above all, it reveals the resilience of Atlantic Canadians as they have struggled to overcome their problems and to share in the benefits of life in the Canadian community.

Download or read book Early European Agriculture written by British Academy. Major Research Project in the Early History of Agriculture and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1982-10-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First printed in 1982, this is the third and final volume to be published as a result of the British Academy Major Research Project on the Early History of Agriculture, carried out in the Department of Archaeology in Cambridge under the direction of the late Eric Higgs. After his death in 1976, the Project was drawn to its conclusion by his associates, and this book is effectively a summary of the results of the Project. The first two volumes, Papers in Economic Prehistory and Palacoeconomy, argued that the development of agriculture was a much more gradual and widespread phenomenon than had been thought previously. This book now discusses the origins and early development of prehistoric agriculture within the framework of prehistoric subsistence economies in general. Early human economies are viewed in their adaptation to three crucial resource zones: the uplands, the lowlands and the littorals.
