This paper promotes a reconceptualization of giftedness as domain-specific developmental advancement. Sex differences reflecting gender stereotypes are discussed, particularly as these illustrate the higher salience for girls of the social domain at this developmental stage. Discussion focuses on the implications of the findings for the provision of gifted education in early adolescence, with a view to encouraging academically able girls to maintain self-esteem and to consider and retain appropriate career ambitions.
