Book excerpt: In the opulent realm of Regency England, Lord Brian Kennington, the Fifth Earl of Connlee, reigns as a maestro of persuasion, his every word a seductive melody. Yet, when fate intertwines his path with the intriguing Lady Minerva Fox, whose propriety veils a yearning for excitement, his artful intentions take center stage. Determined to infuse her life with thrills, he orchestrates a dance of adventure and passion, embracing his moniker-the Earl of Persuasion-wholeheartedly. However, amidst the whirlwind of their exhilarating escapades, an unexpected crescendo emerges: the haunting strains of love's melody, playing a tune both exhilarating and perilous. As Minerva is swept away on a current of enchantment, and Brian's mastery of persuasion falters under the weight of burgeoning emotions, they find themselves at a crossroads. The allure of uncharted romance clashes with the pragmatism of their arrangement, raising the ultimate question: Can an artful seducer evolve into a tenderhearted lover, or will their enthralling pas de deux dissolve into the echoes of what could have been? In the symphony of their desires, the Earl of Persuasion faces his greatest challenge yet-taming his own heart.

Book Saving Persuasion

Download or read book Saving Persuasion written by Bryan Garsten and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-31 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's increasingly polarized political landscape it seems that fewer and fewer citizens hold out hope of persuading one another. Even among those who have not given up on persuasion, few will admit to practicing the art of persuasion known as rhetoric. To describe political speech as "rhetoric" today is to accuse it of being superficial or manipulative. In Saving Persuasion, Bryan Garsten uncovers the early modern origins of this suspicious attitude toward rhetoric and seeks to loosen its grip on contemporary political theory. Revealing how deeply concerns about rhetorical speech shaped both ancient and modern political thought, he argues that the artful practice of persuasion ought to be viewed as a crucial part of democratic politics. He provocatively suggests that the aspects of rhetoric that seem most dangerous--the appeals to emotion, religious values, and the concrete commitments and identities of particular communities--are also those which can draw out citizens' capacity for good judgment. Against theorists who advocate a rationalized ideal of deliberation aimed at consensus, Garsten argues that a controversial politics of partiality and passion can produce a more engaged and more deliberative kind of democratic discourse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What a girl wants… Miss Viola Darling always gets what she wants. Always. And what she wants more than anything is to marry James Kilbrenner, the Earl of Tannenbrook. She’s fallen hard for the giant, taciturn, surly brute, and she positively will have no other. The problem? He’s not interested. Not even a little. But Viola cannot afford to lose. And she has her heart set on James. If only he will bend to a bit of persuasion. Is an earl like no other… James Kilbrenner knows how determined the entirely-too-beautiful Miss Darling can be—the daft woman cornered him at a perfectly respectable dinner and mangled his cravat before he could escape. He has no desire to marry, less desire to be pursued, and will certainly not kiss her kissable lips until they are both breathless, no matter how tempted he may be. And only the right one will do… Thrown in her path by a meddling marchioness, James finds himself under sensual siege from a tiny, flirtatious sprite who puts both his heart and his vow to remain unwed at risk. And when scandal looms, he learns the hard way that a man can resist only so long before the indomitable Miss Darling gets her way.

Download or read book Plays of Persuasion written by Greg Walker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-04-26 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed study of the interaction between drama and politics in the reign of Henry VIII. The subject is addressed both in general terms and through a series of case-studies of individual early Tudor plays. Through its innovative use of dramatic texts as historical source material, the book provides illuminating insights into the political and cultural history of the Henrician period, and into the perceived character of the King himself. It focuses on the troubled religious and political history of the reign, the culture of the Court, and the personality and governmental style of its head. In doing so the book argues for a reassessment of the reign, which places the King once more at the centre of affairs, and acknowledges the determining effect which this egotistical, charismatic but, above all, pragmatic monarch exercised on the artistic culture, as much as on the politics, of the Court. The book also demonstrates the close and specific links between the drama and the politics of the reign, through a detailed study of a number of key works, links which have hitherto been viewed only as general or peripheral.
