Book excerpt: "Geology expert Professor Mike Rackman is studying the Alpine Fault, a 600 km long crack that runs the length of New Zealand's South Island. Every 300 years or so, the fault cracks causing massive earthquakes. Mike hopes his studies will help predict the next big one. Unfortunately, after being shot by a local hunter, the professor disappears. Twelve-year-old Jack Stewart and his cat, Chainsaw, have had earlier adventures with the professor when they travelled back in time to the Taup? Eruption. Jack thinks that the professor has once again jumped through time and is trapped somewhere in the past. He and Chainsaw set out to save him. They end up in the year 1409, just hours before the fault is about to crack. Not only must Jack save the injured professor, he must also convince the local whanau of the coming disaster. The problem is, if he succeeds then the only way he and his friends can return to the 21st century will be blocked for the next 300 years"--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Symbol of power, strength, and freedom, the American bald eagle appears on coins, dollar bills, postage stamps, identification cards, and the presidential seal. It is seen everywhere except in the sky, although that is changing; nearly extinct in 1970, the bald eagle has made a modest comeback. In Eagle’s Plume, Bruce E. Beans recounts the compelling, centuries-old story of the bald eagle’s place in American culture and landscape an its struggle for survival. Reviled by western stockmen as a killer of lambs and calves, the bald eagle has been deified by environmentalists as a reminder of America’s natural heritage. When the great national bird was robbed of its habitat and poisoned with pesticides, federal and environmental groups and local communities rallied to save it. Their heroic efforts are chronicled in the book, which also takes the measure and pulse of the bird that so impressed ancient storytellers.

Book Flyfisher s Guide to New Jersey

Download or read book Flyfisher s Guide to New Jersey written by Tom Gilmore and published by Wilderness Adventures Press. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few states can offer the angling diversity that New Jersey can, which is why Tom Gilmore and Wilderness Adventures Press bring you the brand-new Flyfisher's Guide to New Jersey. New Jersey’s Highlands are reminiscent of New England, and its fall foliage rivals that of Vermont and New Hampshire. Its glacial lakes provide year-round fishing for salmonid species like rainbow, brown, and lake trout and even landlocked salmon. The freestone trout streams found in New Jersey’s Ridge and Valley physiographic province rival those found in the nearby Pocono and Catskills Mountains, and it even has a smattering of limestone spring creeks. The state's Pinelands harbor countless bass and pickerel lakes as well as crappies. New Jersey also has 127 miles of ocean-front beaches with ample public access. Its back bays, estuaries and tidal wetlands serve as nurseries for its many saltwater gamefish. Inshore and offshore opportunities for tuna, bluefish, marlin and more are also covered. Gilmore's 50-plus years of first-hand fishing knowledge guides readers as to where, when and how to catch over 30 species of gamefish. Over 200 freshwater and saltwater locations are covered in this guide, alongside dozens of detailed maps with GPS coordinates for access points, public and private lands, boat ramps, campgrounds, access roads and more. Flyfisher’s Guide to New Jersey is a must read for every fisherman (not just flyfisherman) who lives in or plans to visit New Jersey. Yes, you can flyfish in New Jersey. Learn all about it with the Flyfisher's Guide to New Jersey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of a series of books describing exciting birdwatching locations in Australia. The NSW-ACT Guide is arguably the most comprehensive compendium of birding sites in the State available to date. Not only the standard, well-known locations are covered but also some interesting places known only to a few or newly discovered by ourselves. The book series is intended for both Australian and overseas birders. We hope it will become an essential field companion to a birding enthusiast. In today's time-poor society, the ability to maximise your bird finds in an unfamiliar area in a typically short vacation time available, should be a serious help. For each site, at the minimum, the access details, habitat description, site facilities and key avifauna are addressed. Most data is based on personal records, cross-checked and augmented with the verified sightings reported online. The book is divided into regions including greater Sydney, Hawkesbury, Hunter region, Illawarra, Southern Highlands, South-East NSW, Mid North Coast, Northern Rivers, Western Slopes and Tablelands, Riverina region, Central West NSW, Far West NSW and Australian Capital Territory. The book is richly illustrated with photographs of birds and bird habitats. Book 2: Australian Good Birding Guide: Tasmania Book 3: Australian Good Birding Guide: Victoria

Book The Drowning of Money Island

Download or read book The Drowning of Money Island written by Andrew S. Lewis and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offers a glimpse of the future of vanishing shorelines in America in the age of climate change, where the wealthy will be able to remain the longest while the poor will be forced to leave. Journalist Andrew Lewis chronicles the struggle of his New Jersey hometown to rebuild their ravaged homes in the face of the same environmental stresses and governmental neglect that are endangering coastal areas throughout the United States. Lewis grew up on the Bayshore, a 40-mile stretch of Delaware Bay beaches, marshland, and fishing hamlets at the southern end of New Jersey, whose working-class community is fighting to retain their place in a country that has left them behind. The Bayshore, like so many rural places in the US, is under immense pressure from a combination of severe economic decline, industry loss, and regulation. But it is also contending with one of the fastest rates of sea level rise on the planet and the aftereffects of one of the most destructive hurricanes in American history, Superstorm Sandy. If in the years prior to Sandy the Bayshore had already been slowly disappearing, its beaches eroding and lowland cedar woods hollowing out into saltwater-bleached ghost forests, after the hurricane, the community was decimated. Today, homes and roads and memories are crumbling into the rising bay. Cumberland, the poor, rural county where the Bayshore is located, had been left out of the bulk of the initial federal disaster relief package post-Sandy. Instead of money to rebuild, the Bayshore got the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Superstorm Sandy Blue Acres Program, which identified and purchased flood-prone neighborhoods where working-class citizens lived, then demolished them to be converted to open space. The Drowning of Money Island is an intimate yet unbiased, lyrical yet investigative portrait of a rural community ravaged by sea level rise and economic hardship, as well as the increasingly divisive politics those factors have helped spawn. It invites us to confront how climate change is already intensifying preexisting inequality.
