Download or read book The Scottish Parliament in its Own Words written by Thomas AW Stewart and published by Luath Press Ltd. This book was released on 2019-06-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the Scottish Parliament Oral History Project, around 80 interviews were conducted with staff, MSPs and journalists, old and new, about their careers and experiences at the Scottish Parliament. This book compiles extracts from some of these interviews, detailing the institution's rich history. This is the story of the Scottish Parliament so far, telling its story through those who know it best. Through its comparatively short life, the Parliament has been tested. What was once an upstart institution, unsure of its place in the world, has now become an ingrained part of the nation's political landscape. Now is an ideal moment to take stock of the Parliament's 20-year history – to investigate its origins, its early days and how it has developed over the past two decades.

Download or read book The Glendale Bards written by Meg Bateman and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book marks the centenary of Neil MacLeod's death in 1913 with the republication of some of his work. It also publishes for the first time all of the identifiable work of his brother, Iain Dubh (1847 - 1901), and of their father, Domhnall nan Oran (c.1787 - 1873). Their contrasting styles mark a fascinating period of transition in literary tastes between the 18th and early 20th centuries at a time of profound social upheaval. Neil Macleod left Glendale in Skye to become a tea-merchant in Edinburgh. His songs were prized by his fellow Gaels for their sweetness of sentiment and melody, which placed a balm on the recent wounds of emigration and clearance. They are still very widely known, and Neil's collection Clarsach an Doire was reprinted four times. Professor Derick Thomson rightly described him as 'the example par excellence of the popular poet in Gaelic'. However, many prefer the earthy quality of the work of his less famous brother, Iain Dubh. This book contains 58 poems in all (32 by Neil, 14 by Iain and 22 by Domhnall), with translations, background notes and the melodies where known. Biographies are given of the three poets, while the introduction reflects on the difference in style between them and places each in his literary context. An essay in Gaelic by Professor Norman MacDonald reflects on the social significance of the family in the general Gaelic diaspora.

Book excerpt: Many people won't believe this story. That's the way it is, and I understand that. The first time I met M?iri NicEachairne, I didn't believe it either. But her story is so astonishing and so important for the whole world that I couldn't ignore it. Little by little, I was drawn in by what M?iri had to say. I came to understand that her account of what happened when JFK was murdered in Dealey Plaza was true. M?iri knew Lee Oswald (she never called him 'Harvey') in Dallas in the autumn of 1963. She knew things about the murder of President Kennedy that no-one else knew, at least outside of the gang that was involved in the murder. For that reason, she had to flee the United States. She was in fear of her life. Perhaps she still is. But now she has cancer and hasn't much longer to live.

Download or read book Conservation and Change in Historic Towns written by Elizabeth Patricia Dennison and published by Virago Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of Britain's conservation problems are shared by the rest of Europe and answers may, therefore, be found abroad. The aim of this well-presented volume is to address urban conservation issues and to suggest research directions for the future. The introduction examines the relationship between conservation and change in towns and is followed by a number of case studies. The first section discusses the urban heritage of Europe, including Scandinavian and German towns. The second section examines the towns and buildings of Scotland, from archaeological and conservation perspectives. Conservation experiences across Europe are analysed in the third section, including southern Germany, Edinburgh, York, Dublin and Switzerland, and the fourth section looks at the future of Scottish towns. The twenty papers contain numerous diagrams and photographs which illustrate failures and successes in conservation as well as highlighting areas with great potential for future work.
