Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All hearts strive for love, but just as some waken to fool ́s gold, others watch their trust raped within a sanctity gone awry. Just turned thirty-eight, Elaine embarks on a two-year assignment at just the right time in her life; and she arrives in Istanbul, Turkey, with an agenda: to focus on work, to secure her career, and to lay the foundation of renewal. What, she asks, could possibly go wrong? Troubled Destiny begins just three months into Elaine ́s tour, and it seems Rachel, her sixteen-year-old daughter, has a different agenda. This becomes but one challenge for Elaine, however, when the torso of an American she recently met with floats to the surface of the Bosporus, leaving her with an uncertain danger and no clue as to why. So far, she can cope; but when Ryan, a young airman stationed in Istanbul, unveils his love for her, Elaine is plunged into a cauldron of desire and doubt that has her at wit ́s end. So far, she can manage; but when Paddy, a man she knew briefly before leaving for Turkey, arrives on the coast of the Black Sea, coping and managing are no longer an option. Elaine now enters into a tortuous period where she must face her own worst fears and decide who, if anyone, can share the love she holds.
Download or read book E Fateful Hazards written by R. Drew Springfield and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this the 2nd book of the E series, characters and events brought to the reader in Troubled Destiny draw Elaine and Ryan deeper into a quagmire neither of them expected. Their lives after all are filled with work and duties and a newfound love still struggling to take hold and flourish. Over the next 70 days however, bliss turns to suspicion, tragedy and fear from Istanbul Turkey to the plains of Troy and finally to the bay-city of Izmir, nestled beside the waters of the Aegean. It is the summer of 1971, an idyllic time for those fortunate enough to grasp it. It is also a period on the edge of turmoil soon to envelope the world when terrorism takes hold with hijackings, suicide bombers, assassinations and the mass killing of civilians as a means to an end. The difference between now and 1971 is the absence of rules; those guideposts that were followed for much of the cold war in an honorable game of spy and counterspy. The rules no longer apply in this age of terror, but even then they were beginning to slip, making the idyllic susceptible to the hazards of circumstance and fate. Follow the journey through this maze of intrigue as it ends with one more mystery to solve in the last of this trilogy.

Download or read book The Good the Bad and the Beautiful written by Barry Hallen and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2000-12-22 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful Discourse about Values in Yoruba Culture Barry Hallen Reveals everyday language as the key to understanding morals and ethics in Yoruba culture. "This contrasts with any suggestion that in Yoruba or, more generally, African society, moral thinking manifests nothing much more than a supine acquiescence in long established communal values.... Hallen renders a great service to African philosophy." -- Kwasi Wiredu In Yoruba culture, morality and moral values are intimately linked to aesthetics. The purest expression of beauty, at least for human beings, is to possess good moral character. But how is moral character judged? How do actions, and especially words, reveal good moral character in a culture that is still significantly based on oral tradition? In this original and intimate look at Yoruba culture, Barry Hallen asks the Yoruba onisegun -- the wisest and most accomplished herbalists or traditional healers, individuals justly reputed to be well versed in Yoruba thought and expression -- what it means to be good and beautiful. Posed as an outsider wanting to gain understanding of how to speak Yoruba correctly, Hallen engages the onisegun and has them explain the subtleties and intricacies of Yoruba language use and the philosophy behind particular word choices. Their instructions reveal a striking and profound depiction of Yoruba aesthetic and ethical thought. The detailed interpretations of everyday language that Hallen supplies challenge prevailing Western views that African thought is nothing more than acquiescence to long-established religious or communal values. The philosophy of ordinary language reveals that moral reflection is indeed individual and that evaluations of action and character take place on the basis of clearly and logically delineated criteria. With the onisegun as his guides, Hallen identifies the priorities of Yoruba philosophy and culture through everyday expression and shows that there are rational pathways to both truth and beauty. Barry Hallen has taught philosophy at the Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly University of Ife) in Nigeria. He is a Fellow at the W. E. B. DuBois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University and Visiting Professor of Philosophy at Morehouse College. He is coauthor (with J. Olubi Sodipo) of Knowledge, Belief, and Witchcraft: Analytic Experiments in African Philosophy. Download or read book Continued Violence and Troublesome Pasts written by Ville Kivimäki and published by Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most European countries, the horrific legacy of 1939–45 has made it quite difficult to remember the war with much glory. Despite the Anglo-American memory narrative of saving democracy from totalitarianism and the Soviet epic of the Great Patriotic War, the fundamental experience of war for so many Europeans was that of immense personal losses and often meaningless hardships. The anthology at hand focuses on these histories between the victors: on the cases of Hungary, Estonia, Poland, Austria, Finland, and Germany and on the respective, often gendered experiences of defeat. The book’s chapters underline the asynchronous transition to peace in individual experiences, when compared to the smooth timelines of national and international historiographies. Furthermore, it is important to note that instead of a linear chronology, both personal and collective histories tend to return back to the moments of violence and loss, thus forming continuous cycles of remembrance and forgetting. Several of the authors also pay specific attention to the constructed and contested nature of national histories in these cycles. The role of these ‘in-between’ countries – and even more their peoples’ multifaceted experiences – will add to the widening European history of the aftermath, thereby challenging the conventional dichotomies and periodisations. In the aftermath of the seventieth anniversary of 1945, it is still too early to regard the post-war period as mere history; the memory politics and rhetoric of the Second World War and its aftermath are again being used and abused to serve contemporary power politics in Europe

This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For quarter of a century now the British Army has been involved in a bloody and protracted conflict in Northern Ireland. This book looks at the roots of the current struggle and of British military intervention, setting both in the longer perspective of the Anglo-Irish Troubles. It is, however, more than a chronicle of military strategies and sectarian strife: it seeks to place the use of the army within the context of the wider British experience of dealing with political violence, and to address the broader issue of how democratic states have responded to both ethnic conflict and the threat of `internal' disorder
Download or read book Destiny s Heir written by Y. M. Roger and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicalia Prime: a planet whose population is divided between the Light and the Dark – designations denoting physical attributes and nothing else. It is a small and insignificant planet with a plethora of political problems. However, the intricate aftermath to the climax of those problems has spent the last fifty neras or so weaving itself into the fabric of the over-arching authority – the Galactic Fleet – and the purviews thereof. And while it is becoming increasingly evident that there are other forces working against the Fleet yet simultaneous to those intricacies, it is clear that the offspring of Chicalia’s political problems and those loyal to them and their causes will completely re-shape the government of the Fleet – transferring the Fleet’s seat of power from Galactica Triune to the soon-to-be not-so-insignificant Chicalia Prime. One of those intricacies, Captain Shanteela Ka-Lantrel – or Kaylen to her close friends – in command of the Fleet’s crown jewel, Destiny, knows nothing of the Royal blood that runs through her veins. But Kaylen’s destiny along with those under her command have become entwined with that of another – the exiled OverLord Assassin Thetuderal “Thetu” Shaliagn – and his many brothers in arms. So, as life still continues back on Chicalia Prime, it seems the future of the Fleet and, therefore, the galaxy, is being prophetically and passionately unlocked with Thetu and Kaylen at its epi-center. “Out of the ashes of a flawed foundation and damaged framework, Sha’Hylira shall raise an invincible government that will proclaim His name to the far corners of the universe.”

This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” Nothing has motivated Fleming Rutledge in her preaching more than addressing people’s struggles with doubt. Now with a new preface from the author, Help My Unbelief speaks directly to the “faithful doubters” and the “unbelieving believers” of the church who wrestle with questions and uncertainties about Christian faith. What if I’m not very religious? Why isn’t it enough just to be good and loving? How can I respond to an abstraction like the Trinity? Isn’t Christianity outmoded? Can we still believe in the Resurrection today? Fleming Rutledge approaches these questions with a combination of pastoral warmth and theological fearlessness, aligning herself with those seeking answers and pointing readers toward the One who creates and sustains faith.
