Book excerpt: Between 1925 and 1938, German-born, London-based photographer E.O. Hoppé (1878-1972) traveled the length and breadth of Germany, recording its people and places at one of the most tumultuous times in the country's history. Hoppé photographed movie stars and captains of industry, workers and peasants, and captured the birth of the Autobahn and UFA film studios in their heyday. He saw the rise of fascism, the creation of vast new suburbs and the displacement of people from their traditional ways of life. With unprecedented access to the country's world-famous factories and industrial installations, he witnessed Germany as few others could-barreling headlong into the unknown. Moving, insightful and deeply revealing, the full significance of Hoppé's German work has been unknown until now. This book combines photographs published in Hoppé's legendary 1930 photobook, Deutsche Arbeit, with many previously unpublished pictures. This publication uncovers Hoppé as a pioneer, experimenting with typology, seriality and sequence, and a pivotal figure in the history of 20th-century photography. Hoppé used his experience in Germany to develop a modern style of photography--showing not just how things looked, but how it felt to be there.

Book Scientist

Download or read book Scientist written by Richard Rhodes and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterful, timely, fully authorized biography of the great and hugely influential biologist and naturalist E. O. Wilson, one of the most ground-breaking and controversial scientists of our time—from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Making of the Atomic Bomb “An impressive account of one of the 20th century’s most prominent biologists, for whom the natural world is ‘a sanctuary and a realm of boundless adventure; the fewer the people in it, the better.’” —The New York Times Book Review Few biologists in the long history of that science have been as productive, as ground-breaking and as controversial as the Alabama-born Edward Osborne Wilson. At 91 years of age he may be the most eminent American scientist in any field. Fascinated from an early age by the natural world in general and ants in particular, his field work on them and on all social insects has vastly expanded our knowledge of their many species and fascinating ways of being. This work led to his 1975 book Sociobiology, which created an intellectual firestorm from his contention that all animal behavior, including that of humans, is governed by the laws of evolution and genetics. Subsequently Wilson has become a leading voice on the crucial importance to all life of biodiversity and has worked tirelessly to synthesize the fields of science and the humanities in a fruitful way. Richard Rhodes is himself a towering figure in the field of science writing and he has had complete and unfettered access to Wilson, his associates, and his papers in writing this book. The result is one of the most accomplished and anticipated and urgently needed scientific biographies in years.

Book Growth Hormone Therapy in Pediatrics

Download or read book Growth Hormone Therapy in Pediatrics written by Michael B. Ranke and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 20 years, KIGS (Pfizer International Growth Database) has provided an outstanding tool for monitoring the use, efficacy and safety of growth hormone (GH) treatment in children with short stature of varying origin. This volume offers a comprehensive update of the continuing experiences in KIGS and is based on data from more than 50 countries and more than 60,000 patients. International experts analyse in detail the basic auxological characteristics of patients and their response to GH treatment for a broad spectrum of growth disorders. These include idiopathic GH deficiency, organic GH deficiency due to a variety of causes such as congenital malformations and syndromes, genetic disorders or treatment for leukaemia or central nervous system tumours and short stature in children born small for gestational age, specific syndromes and systemic disorders. Each growth disorder is also covered by a review of relevant published data by international experts. KIGS has also established itself as a primary source of information about adverse events during long-term GH treatment in children. The recent analysis of KIGS data has revealed no new adverse drug reactions since the 10-year follow-up. Therefore, treatment with GH seems a low-risk intervention in children and adolescents with various growth disorders. The process of developing disease-specific growth response prediction models has been ongoing in KIGS for many years. The available models are accurate, precise and have a relatively high degree of predictive power, although further predictors of the growth response remain to be identified. The KIGS prediction models can be applied prospectively to new patients, enabling their GH therapy to be better tailored and monitored to achieve optimal growth, safety and cost outcomes. The future of KIGS within the era of evidence-based medicine will continue to depend upon the quality of the data reported. Therefore, the commitment of participating physicians will continue to be a decisive element. The ongoing recognition of the importance of valid safety and efficacy information in the practice of paediatric endocrinology is exemplified by this valuable international collaboration of clinicians and the pharmaceutical community.
