Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Dynamo Design: With Numerical Examples The aim of this volume is to explain, by means of numerical examples, the methods and calculations necessary for the design of dynamo-electric machinery. Controversial points as to the nicety of design are avoided as belonging to a more advanced study of the subject than is here intended, but the general effect of different modifications are noted as occasion arises. Whilst no endeavour has been made to treat of the theory of electricity and magnetism, introductory chapters deal with points that are most intimately connected with dynamo design in such a way as will, it is hoped, enable those who approach the subject from the practical side, and without any deep theoretical training, intelligently to follow the reasoning in the succeeding chapters. A system of mixed units is used throughout the book: the dimensions of all parts of the machines are given in inches, whilst all the magnetic calculations are worked out in centimeters. It is necessary that the finished results should be put into the shops in feet and inches, but all scientific works and original papers dealing with magnetism invariably base their calculations on the centimeter as the unit of length. Book Design of Dynamos

Download or read book Design of Dynamos written by Silvanus P. Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Design of Dynamos These notes on Dynamo Design are not intended to supersede the more complete handbooks on the special branch of electrical engineering of which this is only a part. In the forthcoming new (seventh) edition of the Author's Dynamo-Electric Machinery many other examples of design will be found. The present short work, intended primarily for the Author's own students, is purposely confined to continuous-current generators. As it will be used by engineers, chiefly in Great Britain, in her Colonies, and in the United States, the calculations and data have been expressed in inch measures. But the Author has adopted throughout the decimal subdivision of the inch; small lengths being given in mils, and small areas of cross-section in square mils, or, sometimes also, in circular mils, to suit American practice. In the section on Armature Winding Schemes special attention is given to series-parallel windings, and to the doctrine of the "equivalent ring." Book Dynamos and Dynamo Design

Download or read book Dynamos and Dynamo Design written by International Correspondence Schools and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dynamos and Dynamo Design: Direct Current Motors; Alternating Currents; Alternators; Alternating-Current Apparatus The International Library of Technology is the outgrowth of a large and increasing demand that has arisen for the Reference Libraries of the International Correspondence Schools on the part of those who are not students of the Schools. As the volumes composing this Library are all printed from the same plates used in printing the Reference Libraries above mentioned, a few words are necessary regarding the scope and purpose of the instruction imparted to the students of - and the class of students taught by - these Schools, in order to afford a clear understanding of their salient and unique features. The only requirement for admission to any of the courses offered by the International Correspondence Schools, is that the applicant shall be able to read the English language and to write it sufficiently well to make his written answers to the questions asked him intelligible. Each course is complete in itself, and no textbooks are required other than those prepared by the Schools for the particular course selected. The students themselves are from every class, trade, and profession and from every country; they are, almost without exception, busily engaged in some vocation, and can spare but little time for study, and that usually outside of their regular working hours. The information desired is such as can be immediately applied in practice, so that the student may be enabled to exchange his present vocation for a more congenial one, or to rise to a higher level in the one he now pursues. Furthermore, he wishes to obtain a good working knowledge of the subjects treated in the shortest time and in the most direct manner possible. Book Dynamos and Dynamo Design

Download or read book Dynamos and Dynamo Design written by International Correspondence Schools and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dynamos and Dynamo Design: Direct Current Motors; Alternating Currents; Alternators; Alternating-Current Apparatus This volume contains an exceptionally clear and complete treatment of the design of direct-current dynamos and motors, together with a detailed discussion of the theory of alternating currents and descriptions of modern alternating current machinery. In presenting the subject of design, a full discussion of the parts of the machines is first taken up, followed by complete demonstrations of design problems. The subject of armature windings receives special attention. Numerous winding diagrams are provided, indicating clearly the relative positions of the coils, pole pieces, and commu tator bars. The text accords with the best modern practice. The theory of the action of motors, their connections and the many systems of speed control are set forth in a clear and comprehensive manner. The importance of a knowl edge of alternating currents in the electrical-engineering profession is steadily growing. Illustrations and the graphical methods of treatment have been freely used. The method of numbering the pages, cuts, articles, etc. Is such that each subject or part, when the subject is divided into two or more parts, is complete in itself; hence, in order to make the index intelligible, it was necessary to give each subject or part a number. This number is placed at the top of each page, on the headline, Opposite the page number; and to distinguish it from the page number it is preceded by the printer's section mark Consequently, a reference such as 16, page 26, will be readily found by looking along the inside edges of the headlines until 16 is found, and then through 16 until page 26 is found. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dynamo: Its Theory, Design, and Manufacture IN writing the present book it has been the endeavour of the authors to furnish to students a simple, yet accurate, account of the theory and design of the modern dynamo. That the attain ment of this aim is no light task we are only too well aware. Such a book, if it is to be of use to those who are either engaged or about to engage in electrical engineering as a pro fession, must combine both the theoretical and practical sides if it is not to repel the general scientific reader, it must be free from excessive technicality; while, lastly, it should not be too mathematical, since it is intended for the learner, who with a general knowledge of electricity comes to the special study of dynamos. Most of all, however, is it important that, so far as it goes, its statements should be entirely accurate. If, therefore, we have attained something of the all-saving merit of accuracy, many defects on other scores may be forgiven, and our attempt to write a new book on so well-worn a theme cannot be pronounced to have been entirely vain. A completely novel treatment of the subject must be either erroneous or well-nigh impossible to devise: any writer on dynamos must necessarily draw from the same fountain-sources, such as the papers of Hopkinson, Kapp, Swinburne, and Essen, and even the best method of presenting much of this accumulated knowledge may have been worked out by some previous author. To such well-known writings we have. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book How to Build Dynamo Electric Machinery

Download or read book How to Build Dynamo Electric Machinery written by Edward Trevert and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprinted from the 1902 edition, this book provides a wonderful insight into Victorian-era electrical machinery. To quote the author?s original preface from the 1894 edition:?Almost the first piece of electrical apparatus the student wishes to construct is the dynamo, in fact it is important that he should be familiar with this machine at the beginning of his studies in electricity. It is the purpose of this book to give practical directions for building small dynamos and motors, and these directions are accompanied with working drawings which will enable to reader to understand the text more clearly. The machines described have been carefully selected both for efficiency and beauty of form. They are easy to build, the design of castings being for as few pieces as possible.?This book is intended as a practical treatise, and in no way is it to be considered technical. Some theory, however, is given to help the reader in a general way. The chapters on commercial dynamos and motors are added to show the general construction of large machines. The chapter on management, and the one containing useful tables, the author hopes will add to the value of the book. No foreign dynamos or motors have been described, owing to the fact that there is sufficient material for description in American machines to answer every purpose of this work.?
