The author develops the theory and application of dynamical systems that incorporate some kind of hard inequality constraint, such as mechanical systems with impact; electrical circuits with diodes (as diodes permit current flow in only one direction); and social and economic systems that involve natural or imposed limits (such as traffic flow, which can never be negative, or inventory, which must be stored within a given facility). This book demonstrates that hard limits - eschewed in most dynamical models - are natural models for many dynamic phenomena, and there are ways of creating differential equations with hard constraints that provide accurate models of many physical, biological, and economic systems. The author discusses how finite- and infinite-dimensional problems are treated in a unified way so the theory is applicable to both ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations.

Book excerpt: The idea for this book was developed in the seminar on problems of con tinuum mechanics, which has been active for more than twelve years at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, Prague. This seminar has been pursuing recent directions in the development of mathe matical applications in physics; especially in continuum mechanics, and in technology. It has regularly been attended by upper division and graduate students, faculty, and scientists and researchers from various institutions from Prague and elsewhere. These seminar participants decided to publish in a self-contained monograph the results of their individual and collective efforts in developing applications for the theory of variational inequalities, which is currently a rapidly growing branch of modern analysis. The theory of variational inequalities is a relatively young mathematical discipline. Apparently, one of the main bases for its development was the paper by G. Fichera (1964) on the solution of the Signorini problem in the theory of elasticity. Later, J. L. Lions and G. Stampacchia (1967) laid the foundations of the theory itself. Time-dependent inequalities have primarily been treated in works of J. L. Lions and H. Bnlzis. The diverse applications of the variational in equalities theory are the topics of the well-known monograph by G. Du vaut and J. L. Lions, Les iniquations en micanique et en physique (1972).

This book is an outgrowth of seven years of seminars and courses on inequality problems in mechanics for a variety of audiences in the Technical University of Aachen, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Hamburg and the Technical University of Milan. The book is intended for a variety of readers, mathematicians and engineers alike, as is detailed in the Guidelines for the Reader. It goes without saying that the work of G. Fichera, J. L. Lions, G. Wisman claims more: it is the defining issue of all human history. The struggle over inequality has been the underlying force driving human history's unfolding. Drawing on the dynamics of inequality, Wisman re-interprets economic history and society. Beyond according inequality the central role in history, this book is novel in two other respects: First, transcending the general failure of social scientists and historians to anchor their work in explicit theories of human behaviour, this book grounds the origins and dynamics of inequality in evolutionary psychology, or more specifically, Darwin's theory of sexual selection. Second, this book accords central importance to ideology in legitimating inequality, a role typically inadequately addressed by social scientists and historians. Because of the central role of inequality in history, inequality's explosion over the past forty years has not been an anomaly. BELL, Men of Mathematics, Simon and Schuster, New York (page 13/14), 1937] The theory of time scales, which has recently received a lot of attention, was introduced by Stefan Hilger in his PhD thesis [159] in 1988 (supervised by Bernd Aulbach) in order to unify continuous and discrete analysis. This book is an intro duction to the study of dynamic equations on time scales. Many results concerning differential equations carryover quite easily to corresponding results for difference equations, while other results seem to be completely different in nature from their continuous counterparts. The study of dynamic equations on time scales reveals such discrepancies, and helps avoid proving results twice, once for differential equa tions and once for difference equations. The general idea is to prove a result for a dynamic equation where the domain of the unknown function is a so-called time scale, which is an arbitrary nonempty closed subset of the reals.

Book excerpt: These notes are the contents of a one semester graduate course which taught at Brown University during the academic year 1981-1982. They are mainly concerned with regularity theory for obstacle problems, and with the dam problem, which, in the rectangular case, is one of the most in teresting applications of Variational Inequalities with an obstacle. Very little background is needed to read these notes. The main re sults of functional analysis which are used here are recalled in the text. The goal of the two first chapters is to introduce the notion of Varia tional Inequality and give some applications from physical mathematics. The third chapter is concerned with a regularity theory for the obstacle problems. These problems have now invaded a large domain of applied mathematics including optimal control theory and mechanics, and a collec tion of regularity results available seems to be timely. Roughly speaking, for elliptic variational inequalities of second order we prove that the solution has as much regularity as the obstacle(s). We combine here the theory for one or two obstacles in a unified way, and one of our hopes is that the reader will enjoy the wide diversity of techniques used in this approach. The fourth chapter is concerned with the dam problem. This problem has been intensively studied during the past decade (see the books of Baiocchi-Capelo and Kinderlehrer-Stampacchia in the references). The relationship with Variational Inequalities has already been quoted above.
