During their life cycles, some species face seasons of cold and heat, aridity and abundant rainfall, migration and stable residence, breeding and nonbreeding. Populations grow and decline as supplies of materials essential to their survival wax and wane. Such qualitative truths as these flow obviously from field observations. In this original monograph, Stephen Fretwell analyzes the highly complex interaction between a population and a regularly varying environment in an attempt to define and measure seasonality as a critical parameter in the general theory of population regulation. Concerned primarily with the size and the habitat distribution of populations, Professor Fretwell develops simple models that, when applied to specific populations, usually of birds, demonstrate the effect of seasonal variations on the regulation of populations. He maintains that seasonality, as a concept, is essential to a full understanding of environmental interaction. During the course of his exposition, the author offers several new hypotheses, including theories affecting the breeding, numbers, distribution, and diversity of wintering birds, and a theory affecting the body size of sparrows.

It arose from a working group established at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis at the University of California, Santa Barbara, to address the need for models that better accommodate environmental variability, especially for herbivores dependent on changing vegetation resources. The initial chapter reviews findings from definitive long-term studies of certain other ungulate populations, many based on individually identifiable animals. Other chapters cover climatic influences, emphasising temperate versus tropical contrasts, and demographic processes underlying population dynamics, more generally. There are new assessments of irruptive population dynamics, and of the consequences of landscape heterogeneity for herbivore populations. An initial review of candidate population models is followed up by a final chapter outlining how these models might be modified to better accommodate environmental variability. The contents provide a foundation for resolving problems of diminishing large mammal populations in Africa, over-abundant ungulate populations elsewhere, and general consequences of global change for biodiversity conservation. In most animal populations, ontogenetic development results in large differences in body size and ecological role between individuals. Individuals in different ontogenetic life stages are therefore differentially affected by seasonality. Yet, the effect of seasonality has been little explored in models that incorporate ontogenetic development. This thesis investigates the importance of seasonality for predictions regarding commercial exploitation and species interactions in biological communities using newly derived and recently developed models that incorporate ontogenetic structure. Existing ecological theory that is based on models with ontogenetic structure and continuous dynamics is shown to be robust against seasonal variability. This thesis furthermore describes effects of seasonality and harvesting on multispecies systems that differ fundamentally from classic insights derived from models that ignore ontogenetic development. The results show that harvesting of prey fish may have a beneficial effect on large predatory fish and that seasonality may promote the persistence of predatory species."--Samenvatting auteur.
