Book Drop Bubble and Particle Dynamics in Complex Fluids

Download or read book Drop Bubble and Particle Dynamics in Complex Fluids written by Pengtao Yue and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-03-19 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of drops, bubbles, and particles affects the behavior and response of complex multiphase fluids. In many applications, these complex fluids have more than one non-Newtonian component, e.g., polymer melts, liquid crystals, and blood plasma. In fact, most fluids exhibit non-Newtonian behaviors, such as yield stress, viscoelastity, viscoplasticity, shear thinning, or shear thickening, under certain flow conditions. Even in the complex fluids composed of Newtonian components, the coupling between different components and the evolution of internal boundaries often lead to a complex rheology. Thus the dynamics of drops, bubbles, and particles in both Newtonian fluids and non-Newtonian fluids are crucial to the understanding of the macroscopic behavior of complex fluids. This Special Issue aims to gather a wide variety of papers that focus on drop, bubble and particle dynamics in complex fluids. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, drop deformation, rising drops, pair-wise drop interactions, drop migration in channel flows, and the interaction of particles with flow systems such as pastes and slurries, glasses, suspensions, and emulsions. We emphasize numerical simulations, but also welcome experimental and theoretical contributions.

Book Microhydrodynamics and Complex Fluids

Download or read book Microhydrodynamics and Complex Fluids written by Dominique Barthès-Biesel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-06-04 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A self-contained textbook, Microhydrodynamics and Complex Fluids deals with the main phenomena that occur in slow, inertialess viscous flows often encountered in various industrial, biophysical, and natural processes. It examines a wide range of situations, from flows in thin films, porous media, and narrow channels to flows around suspended particles. Each situation is illustrated with examples that can be solved analytically so that the main physical phenomena are clear. It also discusses a range of numerical modeling techniques. Two chapters deal with the flow of complex fluids, presented first with the formal analysis developed for the mechanics of suspensions and then with the phenomenological tools of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics. All concepts are presented simply, with no need for complex mathematical tools. End-of-chapter exercises and exam problems help you test yourself. Dominique Barthès-Biesel has taught this subject for over 15 years and is well known for her contributions to low Reynolds number hydrodynamics. Building on the basics of continuum mechanics, this book is ideal for graduate students specializing in chemical or mechanical engineering, material science, bioengineering, and physics of condensed matter.

Book Advances in Fluid Dynamics with emphasis on Multiphase and Complex Flow

Download or read book Advances in Fluid Dynamics with emphasis on Multiphase and Complex Flow written by S. Hernández and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of fluid mechanics is vast and has numerous and diverse applications. Presented papers from the 11th International Conference on Advances in Fluid Dynamics with emphasis on Multiphase and Complex Flow are contained in this book and cover a wide range of topics, including basic formulations and their computer modelling as well as the relationship between experimental and analytical results. Innovation in fluid-structure approaches including emerging applications as energy harvesting systems, studies of turbulent flows at high Reynold number, or subsonic and hypersonic flows are also among the topics covered. The emphasis placed on multiphase flow in the included research works is due to the fact that fluid dynamics processes in nature are predominantly multi-phased, i.e. involving more than one phase of a component such as liquid, gas or plasma. The range of related problems of interest is vast: astrophysics, biology, geophysics, atmospheric processes, and a large variety of engineering applications. Multiphase fluid dynamics are generating a great deal of interest, leading to many notable advances in experimental, analytical, and numerical studies in this area. While progress is continuing in all three categories, advances in numerical solutions are likely the most conspicuous, owing to the continuing improvements in computer power and the software tools available to researchers. Progress in numerical methods has not only allowed for the solution of many practical problems but also helped to improve our understanding of the physics involved. Many unresolved issues are inherent in the very definition of multiphase flow, where it is necessary to consider coupled processes on multiple scales, as well as the interplay of a wide variety of relevant physical phenomena.

Book Complex Flows in Industrial Processes

Download or read book Complex Flows in Industrial Processes written by Antonio Fasano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that fluid dynamics and filtration through porous media and mathematics, there are classical research areas in engineering, physics, are still many industrial processes that require the study of new mathemat ical models for flows of particular complexity, due to the peculiar properties of the systems involved. The aim of this book is to provide a number of examples showing how frequently such situations arise in various branches of industrial technology. The selection of the subjects was motivated not only by their industrial rel evance and mathematical interest. What I had in mind was a collection of problems having a really distinctive character, thus bringing some fresh air into one of the oldest and most revered domains of applied mathematics. The incredible richness of nonstandard flow problems in industrial appli cations has always been, and still is, a constant surprise to me. Therefore I tried to offer a very large spectrum of subjects, with special attention devoted to those problems in which the modeling phase is far from being obvious, and the mathematical content is absolutely nontrivial. With such a view to diversity, topics have been selected from a variety of sources (such as glass industry, polymers science, coffee brewing, fuels pipelining), and contributors from different backgrounds (mathematics, physics, chemical engineering) have been included. Consequently, the mathematical nature of the problems formulated spans over a large range, so that their theoret ical investigation and numerical computation require a variety of different techniques.

Book Non Newtonian Fluid Mechanics and Complex Flows

Download or read book Non Newtonian Fluid Mechanics and Complex Flows written by Angiolo Farina and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-25 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a series of challenging mathematical problems which arise in the modeling of Non-Newtonian fluid dynamics. It focuses in particular on the mathematical and physical modeling of a variety of contemporary problems, and provides some results. The flow properties of Non-Newtonian fluids differ in many ways from those of Newtonian fluids. Many biological fluids (blood, for instance) exhibit a non-Newtonian behavior, as do many naturally occurring or technologically relevant fluids such as molten polymers, oil, mud, lava, salt solutions, paint, and so on. The term "complex flows" usually refers to those fluids presenting an "internal structure" (fluid mixtures, solutions, multiphase flows, and so on). Modern research on complex flows has increased considerably in recent years due to the many biological and industrial applications.

Book Interfacial Dynamics in Complex Fluids

Download or read book Interfacial Dynamics in Complex Fluids written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interfacial flows in complex fluids are an important subject, scientifically rich and technologically important. The main scientific attraction comes from the fact that the microstructure of the bulk fluids may evolve during interfacial flow, and thereby generating non-Newtonian stresses that act on the interface. Thus, interfacial motion and conformation of the microstructure are coupled. Such flow situations arise in many industrial applications, including processing of polymer blends, foaming, and emulsification. In this thesis, I describe three projects aimed at exploring interfacial dynamics of viscoelastic polymeric liquids. The first project consists of finite-element simulations of drop deformation in converging flows in an axisymmetric conical geometry. The moving interface is captured using a diffuse-interface model and accurate interfacial resolution is ensured by adaptive refinement of the grid. The drop experiences a predominantly elongational flow. The amount of deformation sustained by the drop depends, besides the geometry and kinematics of the flow, on the rheology of both the drop and the matrix fluids. The second and third projects concern the same process of selective withdrawal, in which stratified layers of immiscible fluids are withdrawn from a tube placed a certain distance from the interface. We have chosen to work with an air-liquid system, with the suction tube embedded in the Newtonian or viscoelastic liquid. The second project is an experimental study, where we used video recording and imaging processing to analyze how the interfacial deformation is influenced by the non-Newtonian rheology of the liquid. We discover three regimes, subcritical, critical and supercritical. The third project consists of sharp-interface, moving-grid finite-element simulations of selective withdrawal for Newtonian and viscoelastic Giesekus liquids. The experiments and computations are in reasonable agreement. The work of this thesis has led to two main outcom.

The areas of applications span materials processing, manufacturing, and biology.

Book Dynamics and Patterns in Complex Fluids

Download or read book Dynamics and Patterns in Complex Fluids written by Akira Onuki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth Nishinomiya-Yukawa Memorial Symposium, devoted to the topic of dynamics and patterns in complex fluids, was held on October 26 and 27, 1989, in Nishinomiya City, Japan, where ten invited speakers gave their lectures. A one-day meeting, comprising short talks and poster sessions, was then held on the same topic on October 28 at the Research Institute for Fundamental Physics, Kyoto University. The present volume contains the 10 invited papers and 38 contributed papers presented at these two meetings. The symposium was sponsored by Nishinomiya City, where Prof. Hideki Yukawa once lived and where he wrote the celebrated paper describing the work that was later honored by a Nobel prize. The topic of the fourth symposium was chosen from one of the most vigorously evolving and highly interdisciplinary fields in condensed matter physics. The field of complex fluids is very diverse and still in its infancy and, as a result, the definition of a complex fluid varies greatly from one researcher to the next. One of the objectives of the symposium was to clarify its definition by explicitly posing a number of potentially rich problems waiting to be explored. Indeed, experimentalists are disclosing a variety of intriguing dynamical phenomena in complex systems such as polymers, liquid crystals, gels, colloids, and surfactant systems. We, the organizers, hope that the symposium will contribute to the increasing importance of the field in the coming years.
