Book Ecology of Atlantic Salmon and Brown Trout

Download or read book Ecology of Atlantic Salmon and Brown Trout written by Bror Jonsson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-05-03 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Destruction of habitat is the major cause for loss of biodiversity including variation in life history and habitat ecology. Each species and population adapts to its environment, adaptations visible in morphology, ecology, behaviour, physiology and genetics. Here, the authors present the population ecology of Atlantic salmon and brown trout and how it is influenced by the environment in terms of growth, migration, spawning and recruitment. Salmonids appeared as freshwater fish some 50 million years ago. Atlantic salmon and brown trout evolved in the Atlantic basin, Atlantic salmon in North America and Europe, brown trout in Europe, Northern Africa and Western Asia. The species live in small streams as well as large rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal seas and oceans, with brown trout better adapted to small streams and less well adapted to feeding in the ocean than Atlantic salmon. Smolt and adult sizes and longevity are constrained by habitat conditions of populations spawning in small streams. Feeding, wintering and spawning opportunities influence migratory versus resident lifestyles, while the growth rate influences egg size and number, age at maturity, reproductive success and longevity. Further, early experiences influence later performance. For instance, juvenile behaviour influences adult homing, competition for spawning habitat, partner finding and predator avoidance. The abundance of wild Atlantic salmon populations has declined in recent years; climate change and escaped farmed salmon are major threats. The climate influences through changes in temperature and flow, while escaped farmed salmon do so through ecological competition, interbreeding and the spreading of contagious diseases. The authors pinpoint essential problems and offer suggestions as to how they can be reduced. In this context, population enhancement, habitat restoration and management are also discussed. The text closes with a presentation of what the authors view as major scientific challenges in ecological research on these species.

Book Inland Fisheries

Download or read book Inland Fisheries written by and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current high demand for fish and increased awareness of the role of the environment in supporting human well being has led to a situation where attitudes to inland water resources are changing rapidly. Trends in resource use and environmental impact are very evident in inland waters which are particularly vulnerable as they act as collectors of all the activities occurring in their basins and rank as some of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. The principle changes influencing the evolution of the aquatic resource for fisheries are described in this book, which has been compiled for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From reviews of the hardback edition:- No matter how experienced a salmon man the reader is, I cannot believe he will study this extremely informative book without learning a great deal and gaining much enjoyment from doing so.The biology and life of the salmon . . .are all dealt with in a most interesting manner . . .Highly recommended. A book not to be read just once, but often to be consulted.; This book is dedicated to Salar the Salmon and what a tribute it is to this unique fish. Supporters of the Trust would be wise to purchase this book and to keep it on the shelf for future reference. - Atlantic Salmon Trust Progress Report

Book Production of Juvenile Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar in Natural Waters

Download or read book Production of Juvenile Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar in Natural Waters written by National Research Council Canada and published by NRC Research Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up-to-date information, knowledge and research in progress in scientific fields related to natural production of juvenile Atlantic salmon and some other ecologically similar fluvial salmonids is contained in the 25 papers and 12 abstracts contained in this publication, which were prepared for an international symposium held in St. John's, Newfoundland. Studies relate to stream ecology, invertebrates and predators, habitat improvement, competitive effects, behaviour and dispersal, habitat and production of juvenile salmon, population dynamics and relationships of juvenile salmon estimates to smolt yields. A list of participants at the conference is also provided.

Book Stock Recruitment and Reference Points

Download or read book Stock Recruitment and Reference Points written by Etienne Prévost and published by Editions Quae. This book was released on 2001 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects the available knowledge about the ecology of Atlantic salmon and contemporary stock assessment methods supporting the specific task of establishing reference points. Bayesian approaches for incorporating uncertainty are front and centre in the book. Stock and recruitment analysis methods, transport of reference points, risk analysis and use of index measures of abundance are presented in a format which can be readily understood and applied by scientists, educators, professionals and undergraduate students.

Book Status of Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar L Stock of Harry s River Pinchgut Brook Newfoundland 1998

Download or read book Status of Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar L Stock of Harry s River Pinchgut Brook Newfoundland 1998 written by C. C. Mullins and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry's River is the most northerly of the eight scheduled Atlantic salmon rivers flowing into Bay St. George, Salmon Fishing Area (SFA) 13. The recreational fishery on this river was under quota management until 1995 and the river has been closed to retention angling since 1996. In 1993-95, after the introduction of the commercial fishery moratorium, recreational catches of small salmon remained among the lowest on record but large salmon showed signs of improvement. However, estimates of spawning escapements in those years indicate that the population size of both small and large salmon remained at a low level. This document presents the seventh assessment of the status of the Atlantic salmon stock of Harry's River since 1992. The status of the stock is assessed relative to the conservation requirement based on counts of adult salmon at the counting fence on Pinchgut Brook tributary and spawning surveys of the entire river system.
