Book excerpt: This ASI was planned to make a major contribution to the teaching of the principles and methods used in liquid phase ~esearch and to encourage the setting up of collaborative projects, as advocated by the European Molecular Liquids Group (secretary: Dr J. Yarwood, University of Durham, U. K. ). During the past five years considerable progress has been made in studying molecular liquids. The undoubted advantages of international collaboration led to the formation of the European Molecular Liquids Group (EMLG) in July 1981. The activities of the EMLG were widely disseminated in a special session of the European Congress on Molecular Spectroscopy (EUCMOS) held in September 1981 (for details, see J. Mol. Structure, 80 (1982) 375 - 421). Following the success of this meeting, it was thought that the aims and objectives of the E~G would be best served by the organisation of a broader-based gathering designed to attract those interested in the study of the structure, dynamics and interactions in the liquid state. Thanks to the generous support by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO, it was possible to hold a NATO ASI on Molecular Liquids at the Italian Centre of Stanford University, Florence, Italy during June-July 1983. This book is based on the lectures presented at that meeting. The contents of this volume cover the three broad areas of current liquid phase research: (a) Analytical theory.

Download or read book Complex Plasmas written by Michael Bonitz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-04-09 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the reader with an introduction to the physics of complex plasmas, a discussion of the specific scientific and technical challenges they present and an overview of their potential technological applications. Complex plasmas differ from conventional high-temperature plasmas in several ways: they may contain additional species, including nano meter- to micrometer-sized particles, negative ions, molecules and radicals and they may exhibit strong correlations or quantum effects. This book introduces the classical and quantum mechanical approaches used to describe and simulate complex plasmas. It also covers some key experimental techniques used in the analysis of these plasmas, including calorimetric probe methods, IR absorption techniques and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The final part of the book reviews the emerging applications of microcavity and microchannel plasmas, the synthesis and assembly of nanomaterials through plasma electrochemistry, the large-scale generation of ozone using microplasmas and novel applications of atmospheric-pressure non-thermal plasmas in dentistry. Going beyond the scope of traditional plasma texts, the presentation is very well suited for senior undergraduate, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers specializing in plasma physics.

Book Molecular Dynamics and Diffusion

Download or read book Molecular Dynamics and Diffusion written by David J. Fisher and published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-19 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The molecular dynamics technique was developed in the 1960s as the outgrowth of attempts to model complicated systems by using either a) direct physical simulation or (following the great success of Monte Carlo methods) by b) using computer techniques. Computer simulation soon won out over clumsy physical simulation, and the ever-increasing speed and sophistication of computers has naturally made molecular dynamics simulation into a more and more successful technique. One of its most popular applications is the study of diffusion, and some experts now even claim that molecular dynamics simulation is, in the case of situations involving well-characterised elements and structures, more accurate than experimental measurement. The present double volume includes a compilation (over 600 items) of predicted solid-state diffusion data, for all of the major materials groups, dating back nearly four decades. The double volume also includes some original papers: “Determination of the Activation Energy for Formation and Migration of Thermal Vacancies in 401.0 Casting Aluminum Alloy” (N.A.Kamel et al.), “A Study of the Effect of Natural Aging on Some Plastically Deformed Aluminum Alloys using Two Different Techniques” (N.A.Kamel), “Estimation of Crystalline Size of Deformed 5251 Al Alloy using PALT and XRD Techniques” (M.A.Abdel-Rahman et al.), “Determination of the Activation Energy for Formation and Migration of Thermal Vacancies in 2024 Aircraft Material using Different Techniques and Methods” (N.A.Kamel), “Annealing Study of Al-Mg Wrought Alloys using Two Different Techniques and Estimation of the Activation Enthalpy of Migrating Defects” (G.Attallah et al.), “Studying the Formation of Fe2SiO4 and Pearlite Phases in Iron-Silica Sand Nanoparticle Composites” (T.Ahmad et al.), “Studies of Knight Shifts and Hyperfine Structure Constants of Tl2Ba2CuO6+y” (M.Q.Kuang et al.).

Book Decoupling Phenomena in Dynamics of Soft Matter

Download or read book Decoupling Phenomena in Dynamics of Soft Matter written by Alexander Agapov and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite significant work done in the field of the dynamics of soft matter, the microscopic mechanisms controlling various relaxation processes (structural relaxation, diffusion, chain dynamics in polymers) in vitreous materials still remain unclear. The situation is even worse when one tries to understand the interrelation between different relaxation phenomena. Resolving the mechanisms controlling various aspects of glassy structure and dynamics is of obvious fundamental and industrial importance. In this work, mechanisms controlling different relaxation phenomena occurring over a broad range of length and time-scales in vitreous materials were characterized with several experimental techniques: dielectric spectroscopy, light and neutron scattering, and rheology. The effect of polar interactions on the temperature dependences of structural (segmental) and chain dynamics in polymeric liquids was studied. The glass transition temperature, T[subscript g], and fragility index, m, are found to depend on the monomer's polarity and the relative position of the polar group. The effect of polar interactions on T[subscript g] and m is discussed in terms of a balance between changes in the cohesive energy and conformational rigidity. Intriguing and unusual results were obtained on the effect of polar interactions on chain dynamics. It was demonstrated that the presence of polar interactions leads to a significant coupling of segmental and chain dynamics in polar materials in comparison to non-polar polymers with similar fragilities. Apparently, polar interactions have long range effects that are yet to be understood. The temperature dependences of the self-diffusion rate and structural dynamics in a room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) were analyzed in an extremely broad temperature range. The results clearly demonstrate that the self-diffusion coefficient in this molecular liquid has a temperature dependence that is weaker than the temperature dependence of the structural relaxation time. However, the observed decoupling of the structural relaxation and self-diffusion in the polar RTIL is much weaker than expected for a van der Waals molecular glass-forming liquid with comparable fragility. Combination of these results with the data obtained on dynamics in polar polymers allows one to speculate that the large length scale dynamic processes can be significantly affected by the presence of delocalized polar interactions in a broad range of organic glass-forming liquids, polymers and molecular liquids. The relationship between the temperature dependences of ionic conductivity and segmental dynamics in polymers uncovered here also points to intriguing aspects of dynamics in soft matter. Ionic conductivity was found to decouple from segmental dynamics with the degree of decoupling correlating with the fragility of the polymer. It is speculated that frustration in packing is the main driving mechanism of the decoupling between ionic and segmental dynamics. These results suggest that ionic conductivity can be decoupled from segmental dynamics in a material specific way. With the right approach it should be possible to decouple the ionic motion from segmental dynamics in a manner that would result in high conductivity even in the glassy state. This opens new routes for material design of truly solid polymer electrolytes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When, in my capacity as President of the Societe de Chimie physique, I opened the 24th Annual Meeting of this Society, devoted this year to 'molecular motions in liquids', I was stirred by a particular emotion. This had two reasons, one general and the other rather personal. I would like to give an explanation in the Foreword to this volume of communications to the Meeting and their ensuing discussions. An essential characteristic of science is its international nature. It is like a symphony composed of contributions by all the countries playing together as an orchestra in unison. Just as a melody has different 'colours' when played by strings or woodwinds, so there exist similar 'colour' differences, subtle ones, between scientific contributions from different countries, rooted as they are in their own cultural history and liable to impoverish the ensemble if they should cease to participate. I have always had an impression of marked 'colour' differences prevailing among American, Russian, Japanese and European contributions, although within the latter group the timbre is very much the same. This is why I have dreamed of a European 'chamber orchestra' in addition to the great world orchestra.
