Book Dynamics and Control of a Heat Integrated Distillation Column with Side Heat Exchanges

Download or read book Dynamics and Control of a Heat Integrated Distillation Column with Side Heat Exchanges written by Sadanand R. Patil and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the alternative energy-saving methods in a conventional distillation process is the use of side (intermediate) reboiler and/or condenser for a portion of the overall heat load. A nonlinear differential equations model was developed to describe the dynamics of a typical binary distillation process with and without the side heat exchangers. Conventional column dynamics can be represented by 2x2 transfer matrices, whereas for a column with side heat exchangers the open-loop and closed-loop dynamics can be expressed in terms of 4x4 transfer matrices. Analysis indicates that decoupling and feedforward control policies may be hard to implement, due to the increased dimensionality. However, simplifications obtained through the selective pairing of the control variables provide the familiar 2x2 matrix treatment. Classical control policy was extended to design different control strategies (feedback and feedback/feedforward) for a column with side heat exchangers. Simulation studies reveal that the control response is better in the case of the modified column. When the side heat exchanger duties were used as feedforward variables with reflux and main boil-up rates as feedback variables, little improvement was observed as compared to the feedback control alone. On the other hand, use of side heat exchanger duties as feedback variables with reflux and main boil-up rates as feedforward variables resulted in unstable operation of the column.

Download or read book 23 European Symposium on Computer Aided Process Engineering written by Thomas Bisgaard and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic effects of diabatization in distillation columns are investigated in simulation emphasizing the heat-integrated distillation column (HIDiC). A generic, dynamic, first-principle model has been formulated, which is flexible enough to describe various diabatic distillation configurations. Dynamic Relative Gain Array and Singular Value Analysis have been applied in a comparative study of a conventional distillation column and a HIDiC. The study showed increased input-output coupling due to diabatization. Feasible SISO control structures for the HIDiC were also found and control-loop feasibility was demonstrated.

Book Development and Dynamic Analysis of an Experimental Heat Integrated Distillation Column

Download or read book Development and Dynamic Analysis of an Experimental Heat Integrated Distillation Column written by Gregory Philip Golike and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat integrated distillation has been studied using an experimental column built for that purpose. Heat integration involves the use of intermediate reboilers and condensers to increase the thermal efficiency of distillation. The intermediate reboiler and condenser systems used in this work were designed so that the experimental column could be operated either as a conventional distillation column (without the intermediate heat exchangers) or as a heat integrated distillation column. Sufficient instrumentation was included in the experimental setup so that liquid temperatures on each tray in the column could be monitored. Pulse disturbances in four system parameters were used to generate dynamic responses for both conventional and heat integrated distillation using the methanol-water binary system. The disturbed parameters include the liquid feed flowrate, the bottom boilup rate, the external liquid reflux rate and the intermediate condensation rate. Based on comparisons of the dynamic responses for the two systems, it is concluded that heat integrated distillation in this case is more restrained in its response to disturbances. This restraint is attributed to a moderating effect provided by the intermediate heat exchangers. The experimental dynamic responses were compared with dynamic responses predicted by a theoretical model. This comparison indicates that the heat losses from the experimental column are substantial and must be reduced in further work on the experimental equipment.

Book Advanced Distillation Technologies

Download or read book Advanced Distillation Technologies written by Anton A. Kiss and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distillation has historically been the main method for separating mixtures in the chemical process industry. However, despite the flexibility and widespread use of distillation processes, they still remain extremely energy inefficient. Increased optimization and novel distillation concepts can deliver substantial benefits, not just in terms of significantly lower energy use, but also in reducing capital investment and improving eco-efficiency. While likely to remain the separation technology of choice for the next few decades, there is no doubt that distillation technologies need to make radical changes in order to meet the demands of the energy-conscious society. Advanced Distillation Technologies: Design, Control and Applications gives a deep and broad insight into integrated separations using non-conventional arrangements, including both current and upcoming process intensification technologies. It includes: Key concepts in distillation technology Principles of design, control, sizing and economics of distillation Dividing-wall column (DWC) – design, configurations, optimal operation and energy efficient and advanced control DWC applications in ternary separations, azeotropic, extractive and reactive distillation Heat integrated distillation column (HIDiC) – design, equipment and configurations Heat-pump assisted applications (MVR, TVR, AHP, CHRP, TAHP and others) Cyclic distillation technology – concepts, modeling approach, design and control issues Reactive distillation – fundamentals, equipment, applications, feasibility scheme Results of rigorous simulations in Mathworks Matlab & Simulink, Aspen Plus, Dynamics and Custom Modeler Containing abundant examples and industrial case studies, this is a unique resource that tackles the most advanced distillation technologies – all the way from the conceptual design to practical implementation. The author of Advanced Distillation Technologies, Dr. Ir. Anton A. Kiss, has been awarded the Hoogewerff Jongerenprijs 2013. Find out more (website in Dutch)...

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 26 (thesis year 1981) a total of 11 ,048 theses titles from 24 Canadian and 21 8 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 26 reports theses submitted in 1981, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
