Book Metallurgy and Design of Alloys with Hierarchical Microstructures

Download or read book Metallurgy and Design of Alloys with Hierarchical Microstructures written by Krishnan K. Sankaran and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallurgy and Design of Alloys with Hierarchical Microstructures covers the fundamentals of processing-microstructure-property relationships and how multiple properties are balanced and optimized in materials with hierarchical microstructures widely used in critical applications. The discussion is based principally on metallic materials used in aircraft structures; however, because they have sufficiently diverse microstructures, the underlying principles can easily be extended to other materials systems. With the increasing microstructural complexity of structural materials, it is important for students, academic researchers and practicing engineers to possess the knowledge of how materials are optimized and how they will behave in service. The book integrates aspects of computational materials science, physical metallurgy, alloy design, process design, and structure-properties relationships, in a manner not done before. It fills a knowledge gap in the interrelationships of multiple microstructural and deformation mechanisms by applying the concepts and tools of designing microstructures for achieving combinations of engineering properties—such as strength, corrosion resistance, durability and damage tolerance in multi-component materials—used for critical structural applications. - Discusses the science behind the properties and performance of advanced metallic materials - Provides for the efficient design of materials and processes to satisfy targeted performance in materials and structures - Enables the selection and development of new alloys for specific applications based upon evaluation of their microstructure as illustrated in this work

Book Intense Dynamic Loading Of Condensed Matter

Download or read book Intense Dynamic Loading Of Condensed Matter written by A. V. Bushman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-12-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the science and technology necessary to understand, predict, and simulate the phenomena associated with intense dynamic loading of matter. The book begins with background information on shock wave phenomena in materials and how they are measured. This includes materials with strength, materials undergoing dynamic phase transformations, and material fracturing. The authors then cover the phenomena associated with detonations, where the chemical energy release of an explosive is an integral part of the hydrodynamics and describe the formation and application of the semi-empirical equation of state. They develop the numerical techniques for doing realistic computer simulations of complicated dynamical processes associated with impacts. The book closes with reviews simulations, compared with experiments, for a variety of dynamic loading events, including laser and electron beam interactions with metals, high explosive loading of iron, and impacts of cometary dust on the Vega space probe as it crossed the tail of Hailey's comet.

Book Fast Transverse Beam Instability Caused by Electron Cloud Trapped in Combined Function Magnets

Download or read book Fast Transverse Beam Instability Caused by Electron Cloud Trapped in Combined Function Magnets written by Sergey A. Antipov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents profound insights into the origins and dynamics of beam instabilities using both experimental observations and numerical simulations. When the Recycler Ring, a high-intensity proton beam accelerator at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, was commissioned, it became evident that the Recycler beam experiences a very fast instability of unknown nature. This instability was so fast that the existing dampers were ineffective at suppressing it. The nature of this phenomenon, alongside several other poorly understood features of the beam, became one of the biggest puzzles in the accelerator community. The author investigated a hypothesis that the instability arises from an interaction with a dense cloud of electrons accompanying the proton beam. He studied the phenomena experimentally by comparing the dynamics of stable and unstable beams, by numerically simulating the build-up of the electron cloud and its interaction with the beam, and by constructing an analytical model of an electron cloud-driven instability with the electrons trapped in combined-function dipole magnets. He has devised a method to stabilize the beam by a clearing bunch, which conclusively revealed that the instability is caused by the electron cloud, trapped in a strong magnetic field. Finally, he conducted measurements of the microwave propagation through a single dipole magnet. These measurements have confirmed the presence of the electron cloud in combined-function magnets.

Discussions focus on stress-strain behavior in relation to composition, structure, and annealing; comparison of stress-strain curves with work softening theory; sweeping and trapping mechanism; and model of dipolar wall structure formation. The text then ponders on plastic instabilities and their relation to fracture and dislocation and kink dynamics in f.c.c. metals studied by mechanical spectroscopy. The book takes a look at misfit dislocation generation mechanisms in heterostructures and evolution of dislocation structure on the interfaces associated with diffusionless phase transitions. Discussions focus on dislocation representation of a wall of elastic domains; equation of equilibrium of an elastic domain; transformation of dislocations; and theoretical and experimental background. The selection is a valuable reference for readers interested in dislocation interactions.
