Book Urban Planning Under Thatcherism

Download or read book Urban Planning Under Thatcherism written by Andy Thornley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-20 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991, Urban Planning Under Thatcherism links theory and practice to assess the changes to the planning system since 1979. It analyses the major trends by investigating the individual modifications in the legislation and the new initiatives which have introduced procedures to by-pass the normal system. Such changes are fundamental not only to the built environment but to the quality of urban life and ultimately to the nature of society. The book argues that this orientation is the result of a policy shift from local democracy to centralisation and from the criteria of the public interest to those of the market.

Book Assessing the Balance of Power in Central Local Relations in China

Download or read book Assessing the Balance of Power in Central Local Relations in China written by John Donaldson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we understand the evolution of central-local relations in China during the reform period? This book addresses this question by focusing on eight separate issues in which the central-local relationship has been especially salient – government finance, investment control, regional development, administrative zoning, implementation, culture, social welfare and international relations. Each chapter introduces a sector and the way the center and various local governments have shared or divided power over the different periods of China’s reform era. The balance of power is gauged dynamically over time to measure the extent to which one level of government dominates, influences or shares power in making decisions in each of these particular domains, as well as what is likely to occur in the foreseeable future. The authors assess the winners and losers of these changes among key actors in China’s society. The result provides a dynamic view of China’s changing power relations.

Book Globalisation and Labour Struggle in Asia

Download or read book Globalisation and Labour Struggle in Asia written by Phoebe Moore and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-06-29 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How has South Korea's development influenced and been influenced by world events? What light can it shed on the way that international struggles for hegemony affect local environments? Phoebe Moore seeks to address these questions critically, from the perspective of International Political Economics, and so provides important insight into one of the fastest growing Asian economies. She examines the neo-Gramscian school theories – that world history reveals specific periods of hegemonic stability, such as during the post World War II period of 'Pax Americana' – and refutes this position through an original account of Korean development. Instead, she observes that all economic development in this country has been carried out through 'passive revolution' driven by an elite, frequently supported by external forces, against the will of a large part of the population, namely the working classes. Moore draws out the relationships between socio-economic change, passive revolution, hegemony struggles and global politics, making this a key resource for Asian political economics, labour relations and international politics.

Book The Political Economy of Bank Regulation in Developing Countries

Download or read book The Political Economy of Bank Regulation in Developing Countries written by Emily Jones and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations.International banking standards are intended for the regulation of large, complex, risk-taking international banks with trillions of dollars in assets and operations across the globe. Yet they are being implemented in countries with nascent financial markets and small banks that have yet to ventureinto international markets. Why is this? This book develops a new framework to explain regulatory interdependence between countries in the core and the periphery of the global financial system. Drawing on in-depth analysis of eleven countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, it shows howfinancial globalisation generates strong reputational and competitive incentives for developing countries to converge on international standards. It explains how specific cross-border relations between regulators, politicians, and banks within developing countries, and international actors includinginvestors, peer regulators, and international financial institutions, generate regulatory interdependence. It explains why some configurations of domestic politics and forms of integration into global finance generate convergence with international standards, while other configurations lead todivergence. This book contributes to our understanding of the ways in which governments and firms in the core of global finance powerfully shape regulatory decisions in the periphery, and the ways that governments and firms from peripheral developing countries manoeuvre within the constraints andopportunities created by financial globalisation.

Book The Political Economy Of China s Financial Reforms

Download or read book The Political Economy Of China s Financial Reforms written by Paul Bowles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS PATHBREAKING Work analyzes the evolution of China's financial reforms since 1979. China's reformers have stressed the construction of a more diverse, flexible, and competitive financial system as a crucial element of China's economic reform program. The authors assess the theory and practice of financial reform in light of China's specific characteristics as a large, developing country that still claims to be pursuing the goal of establishing a new form of "socialist" market economy. The authors utilize two approaches. First, they place the overall design and trajectory of. financial reform since 1979 within a broad comparative framework of alternative strategies of financial reform and financial systems. Second, they use a political economy perspective to explore the complex interactions among the political and economic actors— individual, group, or institutional—that affect reform outcomes. Integrating these two approaches, the authors conclude by assessing future directions for feasible and desirable financial reform in China.
