Book Dynamic Steady State Crack Propagation in Linear Isotropic Viscoelastic Material

Download or read book Dynamic Steady State Crack Propagation in Linear Isotropic Viscoelastic Material written by J. R. Walton and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is a summary of results of some recent analytical studies of dynamic, steady-state crack propagation in linear viscoelastic material. Closed form solutions are presented for the problems of a semi-infinite, anti-plane shear crack propagating with constant speed in an infinite general linear viscoelastic body and in a layer of finite thickness. For both boundary value problems, and for a general class of shear modulus, the solutions obtained exhibit a universal structure that depends in a simple way upon the time dependent shear modulus and crack speed. The forms for the solutions are convenient for the extraction of qualitative and quantitative information about the dependence of the stress field in the body upon the loading, the crack speed and the shear modulus. Book The Dynamic Energy Release Rate for Two Parallel Steadily Propagating Mode III Cracks in a Viscoelastic Body

Download or read book The Dynamic Energy Release Rate for Two Parallel Steadily Propagating Mode III Cracks in a Viscoelastic Body written by L. Schovanec and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic steady state propagation of two parallel semi-infinite, mode III cracks is considered for a general, infinite, homogeneous, isotropic linearly viscoelastic body. A Barenblatt type failure zone is introduced in order to cancel the singular stress and a formula for the energy release rate is derived which provides immediate comparisons with the corresponding single crack problem. The influence of crack speed, crack separation, and material properties upon the energy release rate are illustrated with numerical calculations for both power-law material and a standard linear solid. Keywords: viscoelasticity; dynamic fracture; dynamic energy release rate; Barenblatt zone; crack growth.

Book The Dynamic Energy Release Rate for a Steadily Propagating Anti Plane Shear Crack in a Linearly Viscoelastic Body

Download or read book The Dynamic Energy Release Rate for a Steadily Propagating Anti Plane Shear Crack in a Linearly Viscoelastic Body written by Jay R. Walton and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The steady-state propagation of a semi-infinte, anti-plane shear crack is reconsidered for a general, infinite, homogeneous and isotropic linearly viscoelastic body. As with an earlier study, the inertial term in the equation of motion is retained and the shear modulus is only assumed to be positive, continuous, decreasing and convex. A Barenblatt type failure zone is introduced in order to cancel the singular stress, and a numerically convenient expansion for the dynamic Energy Release Rate (ERR) is derived for a rather general class of crack face loadings. The ERR is shown to have a complicated dependence on crack speed material properties with significant qualitative differences between viscoelastic and elastic material. The results are illustrated with numerical calculations for both power-law material and a standard linear solid. Keywords: Crack Growth; Fracture Mechanics; Dynamic Fracture.

Book Crack and Contact Problems for Viscoelastic Bodies

Download or read book Crack and Contact Problems for Viscoelastic Bodies written by G.A.C. Graham and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main emphasis of these Lecture Notes is on constructing solutions to specific viscoelastic boundary value problems; however properties of the equations of viscoelasticity that provide the theoretical underpinnings for constructing such solutions are also covered. Particular attention is paid to the solution of crack and contact problems. This work is of interest in the context of polymer fracture, modelling of material behaviour, rebound testing of polymers and the phenomenon of hysteretic friction.

Book The Dynamic Steady State Propagation of an Anti Plane Shear Crack in a General Linearly Viscoelastic Layer

Download or read book The Dynamic Steady State Propagation of an Anti Plane Shear Crack in a General Linearly Viscoelastic Layer written by J. R. Walton and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a previous paper, the dynamic, steady-state propagation of an semi-infinite anti-plane shear crack was considered for an infinite, general linearly viscoelastic body. Under the assumptions that the shear modulus is a positive, non-increasing continuous and convex function of time, convenient, closed-from expressions were derived for the stress intensity factor and for the entire stress distribution ahead of and in the plane of the advancing crack. The solution was shown to have a simple universal dependence upon the shear modulus and crack speed from which qualitative information can readily be gleaned. Here, the corresponding problem for a general, linearly viscoelastic layer is solved. An infinite series representation for the stress intensity factor is derived, each term of which can be calculated recursively in closed-form. As before, a simple universal dependence upon crack speed and material properties is exhibited. (Author).

Book Crack Propagation in Linear and Nonlinear Visoelastic Material

Download or read book Crack Propagation in Linear and Nonlinear Visoelastic Material written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this project is tile formulation and analysis of canonical boundary value problems modeling dynamic fracture in elastic and viscoelastic material. The selection of specific problems is guided by a number of goals. (1) One goal is to understand and model a number of surprising experimentally observed features of dynamic crack propagation in brittle polymers that are not predicted by classical linear elastic fracture mechanics. (2) Another goal is to solve dynamic fracture boundary value problems incorporating a crack tip cohesive zone whose constitutive law is derived from micromechanical models of the physical processes occurring at the tip of a growing crack in a brittle polymer. (3) A third goal is to develop combined analytical and numerical solution schemes for the above canonical dynamic fracture boundary value problems which can be used to benchmark and test direct numerical methods for solving such problems.

Book The Quasi Static Propagation of a Plane Strain Crack in a Power Law Inhomogeneous Linearly Visoelastic Body

Download or read book The Quasi Static Propagation of a Plane Strain Crack in a Power Law Inhomogeneous Linearly Visoelastic Body written by Lawrence Schovanec and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis is presented of the steady-state propagation of a semi-infinite mode I crack for an infinite inhomogeneous, linearly viscoelastic body. The shear modulus is assumed to have a power-law dependence on depth from the plane of the crack. Moreover, both a general and a power-law behavior in time for the shear modulus are considered. A simple closed form expression for the normal component of stress in front of the propagating crack is derived which exhibits explicity the form of the stress singularity and its material dependency. The crack profile is examined and its dependence on the spatial and time behavior of the shear modulus is determined. Keywords: Viscoelasticity; Crack Growth; Fracture Mechanics; Dynamic Fracture.

Book On the Energy Release Rate for Dynamic Transient Anti Plane Shear Crack Propagation in a General Linear Viscoelastic Body

Download or read book On the Energy Release Rate for Dynamic Transient Anti Plane Shear Crack Propagation in a General Linear Viscoelastic Body written by J. M. Herrmann and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of a semi-infinite mode III crack that suddenly begins to propagate at a constant speed is considered for a general linear viscoelastic body. Simple closed form expressions are derived for the Laplace transform of the stress, displacement, and stress intensity factor. A Barenblatt type failure zone is assumed to exist at the crack tip and an expression for the total energy flux into the failure zone per unit crack advance, G(t), is derived. The short time asymptotic form of G is constructed and the rate at which it converges to its steady-state limit is studied. It is shown that the rate of convergence to steady-state is dependent upon crack speed and material properties. (jes).
