Book Dynamic Properties of Geosynthetic Interfaces

Download or read book Dynamic Properties of Geosynthetic Interfaces written by J. Kim and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study of geosynthetics was carried out on a shaking table to investigate the relationship between dynamic friction resistances and shear displacement rate and to examine other frictional characteristics of geosynthetic interfaces. A cyclic, displacement rate-controlled experimental setup was developed. The subsequent multiple rate tests showed that interfaces that involve geotextiles have unique shearing characteristics that can be differentiated from the interfaces not involving geotextiles. It was found that shear strengths of geosynthetic interfaces tend to increase with increasing displacement rate for combinations of geosynthetics that involve geotextiles; whereas, shear strengths of interfaces not involving geotextiles do not.

Book DSC HISS Modeling Applications for Problems in Mechanics Geomechanics and Structural Mechanics

Download or read book DSC HISS Modeling Applications for Problems in Mechanics Geomechanics and Structural Mechanics written by Chandrakant S. Desai and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the mechanical behavior of solids and contacts (interfaces and joints) is vital for the analysis, design, and maintenance of engineering systems. Materials may simultaneously experience the effects of many factors such as elastic, plastic, and creep strains; different loading (stress) paths; volume change under shear stress; and microcracking leading to fracture and failure, strain softening, or degradation. Typically, the available models account for only one factor at a time; however, the disturbed state concept (DSC) with the hierarchical single-surface (HISS) plasticity is a unified modeling approach that can allow for numerous factors simultaneously, and in an integrated manner. DSC/HISS Modeling Applications for Problems in Mechanics, Geomechanics, and Structural Mechanics provides readers with comprehensive information including the basic concepts and applications for the DSC/HISS modeling regarding a wide range of engineering materials and contacts. Uniformity in format and content of each chapter will make it easier for the reader to appreciate the potential of using the DSC/HISS modeling across various applications. Features: • Presents a new and simplified way to learn characterizations and behaviors of materials and contacts under various conditions • Offers modeling applicable to several different materials including geologic (clays, sands, rocks), modified geologic materials (structured soils, overconsolidated soils, expansive soils, loess, frozen soils, chemically treated soils), hydrate-bearing sediments, and more.

Book Geotechnical Engineering For Disaster Mitigation And Rehabilitation Proceedings Of The International Conference With Cd rom

Download or read book Geotechnical Engineering For Disaster Mitigation And Rehabilitation Proceedings Of The International Conference With Cd rom written by Jian Chu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-12-09 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the devastating disaster caused by the tsunami on 26 December 2004, disaster mitigation and rehabilitation have become some of the most pressing topics for discussion in geotechnical engineering and related professions. Some of the most important contributions to this discussion were made during the International Conference on Geotechnical Engineering for Disaster Mitigation and Rehabilitation, the first of its kind held in the Asia-Pacific region. It was organized by the Joint Working Group on Geotechnical Engineering for Disaster Mitigation and Rehabilitation (JWG-DMR), which is supported by national geotechnical societies from Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia (comprising Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand) and Sri Lanka.Disaster management encompasses diverse topics such as natural disasters (tsunamis, earthquakes, landslides, etc.), mitigation (early warning and prediction systems, hazard mapping, risk analysis, coastal protection works, etc.), rehabilitation and reconstruction (difficult soils and ground treatment, design against earthquakes and other natural disasters, etc.), and many others, including soil dynamics, liquefaction, stability, and environmental protection. This volume contains over 100 high quality papers contributed by authors from participating countries, including keynote and invited lectures delivered by eminent researchers and practitioners. The proceedings will benefit the geotechnical profession as a whole, in particular those who are involved in disaster prevention, mitigation, rehabilitation and reconstruction works. In addition, the contributions will add impetus to research and development in this important domain: the long-term goal is to mitigate the unacceptable magnitude of destruction and the number of human lives lost such as in the recent 2004 tsunami tragedy.
