Book Dynamic Instability of Circular Cylindrical Shells Having Viscoelastic Cores

Download or read book Dynamic Instability of Circular Cylindrical Shells Having Viscoelastic Cores written by Carl Zweben and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigatin has been made to determine the stablizing effects of viscoelastic cores on the response of long, circular cylindrical shells subjected to time-dependent axial loads. A small strain-large rotation shell theory of the Karman-Tsien type, in which only the radial inertia terms are included, is employed to analyze the shell. The core response is determined by applying the Laplace transform to the three-dimensional, linear, viscoelastic field equations in which all inertia terms are neglected. Coupling of the structural elements is obtained by requiring that the radial displacements be compatible and that the shearing stresses vanish at the interface. (It has been shown that the most important stabilizing effect comes from the radial stress and that the shearing stress between the core and the shell can be negleced.) The radial shell deflection is approximated by using a four-term deflection functionh having time-dependent coefficients. By appealing to Hamilton's principle, a system of four coupled integro-differential equations of these coefficients is obtained. A numerical integration procedure is then used to solve these equations. Studies have been made of the magnitude of the critical loads as a function of both the initial shell imperfections and the time duration of loading.

Book Dynamic Instability of a Cylindrical Shell with an Elastic Core

Download or read book Dynamic Instability of a Cylindrical Shell with an Elastic Core written by Jerome M. Klosner and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stabilizing effect of an elastic core on the response of a long, circular cylindrical shell with initial imperfections and subjected to time-dependent axial edge loads is investigated. The three-dimensional elastic field equations in which all inertia terms are neglected are used to derive the core response. A nonlinear shell theory of the Karman-Tsien type is utilized to derive the shell equations in which only the radial inertia terms are included. Coupling is effected by enforcing the condition that the radial displacements at the interface be compatible. It is also assumed that the interface shearing stresses vanish. The displacement of the cylinder is obtained by using an approximate deflection function having four time-dependent parameters. The application of Hamilton's principle yields four coupled differential equations on these four parameters which are solved numerically for a step edge-loading. The results are compared to those previously obtained for cylinders without cores. Additional results obtained for the coreless cylinders are also included. (Author).

Book A Note on the Dynamic Instability of Stiffened Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book A Note on the Dynamic Instability of Stiffened Cylindrical Shells written by Jerome M. Klosner and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic instability of long, stiffened circular cylindrical shells subjected to time-independent loads is investigated. It is assumed that the stiffeners are spaced sufficiently close so that their properties can be averaged out. The equations of motion of the structure is determined by using a nonlinear orthotropic shell theory of the Karman-Tsien type. An approximate deflection function with time-dependent coefficients is assumed and a Ritz-Galerkin procedure applied to yield four coupled, nonlinear differential equations. These equations are solved numerically for an applied axial compressive load. A dynamic buckling instability criterion is established. (Author).

Book Elastic Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Elastic Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells written by N. Yamaki and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1984-02-01 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to clarify the whole aspect of the basic problems concerning the elastic stability of of circular cylindrical shells under typical loading conditions. The book deals with buckling, postbuckling and initial postbuckling problems under one of the three fundamental loads, that is, torsion, pressure and compression. The emphases are placed on the accurate analysis and comprehensive numeral results for the buckling problem, experimental verification of the theoretical analysis for the postbuckling problem and clarification of the range of applicability of the perturbation method for the analysis of initial postbuckling behaviors and imperfection sensitivity. The problems under typical combined loads as well as the influence of the contained liquid are also clarified.

Book Dynamic Stability and Non linear Oscillations of Cylindrical Shells plain Strain Subjected to Impulsive Pressure

Download or read book Dynamic Stability and Non linear Oscillations of Cylindrical Shells plain Strain Subjected to Impulsive Pressure written by Ivor Keen McIvor and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equations of motion for large deformation of a thin elastic cyl ndrical shell are derived and simplified to a form second order theory which is adequate for investigating the dynamic stability of the shell. A review of linear vibrations is presented. The response of a cylindrical shell to a uniform impulsive pressure is investigated. It is found that the circular mode of vibration, which is the basic response of the shell, may be unstable, the shell going over into bending modes of vibration. A criterion is established for predicting the bending modes excited. It is shown that the type of instability involved corresponds to what is known as autoparametric excitation in non-linear oscillations. Uniform impulsive pressure of sufficient magnitude to cause inward plastic flow is considered. The analysis is carried out for a stress-strain relation which includes purely viscous, viscoplastic, and linear strain hardening materials as special cases. It is shown that a series of wrinkles develop around the circumference as the shell flows inward. The wrinkling arises from magnification of the irregularities in the initial radial velocity due to the compressive membrane force in the shell. (Author).
