Book Dynamic Image Analysis of Granular Materials

Download or read book Dynamic Image Analysis of Granular Materials written by Magued Iskander and published by Springer. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the effectiveness of Dynamic Image Analysis (DIA) in granulometry studies of sand, and presents criteria for soil characterization using DIA, including test parameters, specimen size, efficacy in gap-graded soils, and its limitations. DIA is a modern experimental technique used to analyze and classify particulate materials based on their size, shape, and other morphological properties. This method employs a high-frame-rate camera to capture images of individual sand particles, which have been transported and separated using various techniques. DIA generates both particle size and shape information by analyzing thousands to millions of particles, providing a quantitative statistical description of grain size and shape distribution within the specimen. The manuscript also offers a comprehensive examination of 2D and 3D particle size and shape descriptors. It demonstrates that there is no correlation between size and shape parameters in many sands and that shape descriptors can be reduced to four independent parameters representing sand granulometry at different scales. Additionally, the use of DIA in exploring the depositional history of two complex calcareous sands is presented. The manuscript presents the properties of 30 representative sands, including size and shape parameters, and fits them to statistical distributions. The investigated soils encompass both natural and machine-sorted materials, particles with regular and irregular shapes, as well as siliceous and calcareous sands. Physical granulometry of sand particles is compared using 2D, 3D DIA, and micro-computed tomography (μCT). The work demonstrates that DIA offers significant advantages in terms of efficiency for 3D shape analysis while providing an adequate representation of particle sizes and shapes of most sands. Finally, the manuscript integrates classical geotechnical engineering with computer vision and artificial intelligence. Size and shape descriptors are utilized for sand classification through machine learning models. This work represents a crucial step toward the automatic machine classification of soils, potentially enabling on-site classification using smartphones equipped with high-resolution cameras.

Book Evaluation of Dynamic Image Analysis for Characterizing Granular Soils

Download or read book Evaluation of Dynamic Image Analysis for Characterizing Granular Soils written by Linzhu Li and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the efficacy of dynamic image analysis (DIA) for determining particle size and shape distribution. The method employs a high-frame-rate camera to image individual particles of sand that have been transported and separated using a stream of pressurized air. DIA can generate both particle size and shape information and provides a quantitative statistical description of the grain size and shape distribution within the specimen. The feasibility, repeatability, and accuracy of DIA for routine analysis of particle size and shape distribution was investigated using 16 granular soils spanning a number of common sizes and shapes. Several particle shape descriptors were evaluated, including aspect ratio, convexity, and sphericity. The effect of a variety of test parameters including moisture content, sample weight, primary air pressure, and test duration were explored to determine the optimal specimen weight and equipment settings for DIA. Finally, the efficacy of DIA in resolving mixtures of fine and coarse sands was also explored. The method proved to be feasible, repeatable, and accurate for providing particle size distributions spanning four orders of magnitude, in terms of particle size. DIA offers a number of advantages; the method is quick, requires small specimen sizes, and provides quantitative information on approximately 3-4 % of the particles in the specimen.

Book Risk and Reliability in Geotechnical Engineering

Download or read book Risk and Reliability in Geotechnical Engineering written by Kok-Kwang Phoon and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Establishes Geotechnical Reliability as Fundamentally Distinct from Structural Reliability Reliability-based design is relatively well established in structural design. Its use is less mature in geotechnical design, but there is a steady progression towards reliability-based design as seen in the inclusion of a new Annex D on "Reliability of Geotechnical Structures" in the third edition of ISO 2394. Reliability-based design can be viewed as a simplified form of risk-based design where different consequences of failure are implicitly covered by the adoption of different target reliability indices. Explicit risk management methodologies are required for large geotechnical systems where soil and loading conditions are too varied to be conveniently slotted into a few reliability classes (typically three) and an associated simple discrete tier of target reliability indices. Provides Realistic Practical Guidance Risk and Reliability in Geotechnical Engineering makes these reliability and risk methodologies more accessible to practitioners and researchers by presenting soil statistics which are necessary inputs, by explaining how calculations can be carried out using simple tools, and by presenting illustrative or actual examples showcasing the benefits and limitations of these methodologies. With contributions from a broad international group of authors, this text: Presents probabilistic models suited for soil parameters Provides easy-to-use Excel-based methods for reliability analysis Connects reliability analysis to design codes (including LRFD and Eurocode 7) Maximizes value of information using Bayesian updating Contains efficient reliability analysis methods Accessible To a Wide Audience Risk and Reliability in Geotechnical Engineering presents all the "need-to-know" information for a non-specialist to calculate and interpret the reliability index and risk of geotechnical structures in a realistic and robust way. It suits engineers, researchers, and students who are interested in the practical outcomes of reliability and risk analyses without going into the intricacies of the underlying mathematical theories.

Book Evaluation of Particle Size Distribution Influence on Flowability of Granular Materials Using a Digital Image Correlation Method

Download or read book Evaluation of Particle Size Distribution Influence on Flowability of Granular Materials Using a Digital Image Correlation Method written by Ragunanth Venkatesh and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the aim to characterize the flowability of granular materials under uniaxial compression force a GFA index can be used. The GFA index is calculated based on the integration of the internal pressure distribution along the cylinder wall caused by uniaxial compressed granular material contained in the cylinder. In this thesis an optical granular friction analyzer (OGFA) is presented, where a digital image correlation (DIC) method is utilized to assess the cylinder strains used to calculate the internal pressure distribution. For the purpose of demonstration and validation of the developed O-GFA apparatus, three SS316L granular material samples with different particle mean sizes were tested and the results confirm that the particle mean size regulates the internal friction of granular materials. Further, the study of the influence of particle size distribution (PSD) width on GFA index and its related flowability showed that as PSD width increases, the GFA index increases, internal friction decreases and the internal pressure ratio remains constant. It has also been shown that the value of GFA index is load independent. Based on the experiments performed and presented results the main advantage of using the DIC method based O-GFA is that the piston-powder contact point and the region of the integration avoiding the region under the edge effects can be defined. Additionally, a 2% improvement of the GFA index's accuracy has been achieved and showed by parametric analysis that the most of the observed total error (7.5%) arises from the DIC method-based measurements of the strains along the piston. Its robustness with respect to the number of points considered in evaluation of strains and related internal pressure has been demonstrated. It can also be concluded that, determining the GFA index using the O-GFA for characterizing the flowability of uniaxially compressed granular material is an alternative to traditional methods, which require the individual properties of granular materials i.e. internal friction and internal pressure ratio to be determined through two separate tests.
