For example, we can penetrate deep into the interior of our planet and effectively X-ray its internal structure. With this technology comes an increased awareness of how our planet is continually changing and a fresh awareness of how fragile it is. Designed for the introductory Physical Geology course found in Geology, Earth Science, Geography, or Physical Science departments, Dynamic Earth: An Introduction to Physical Geology clearly presents Earth's dynamic geologic systems with their many interdependent and interconnected components. It provides comprehensive coverage of the two major energy systems of Earth: the plate tectonic system and the hydrologic cycle. The text fulfills the needs of professors by offering current content and a striking illustration package, while exposing students to the global view of Earth and teaching them to view the world as geologists.

Book Dynamic Earth Environments

Download or read book Dynamic Earth Environments written by Kamlesh P. Lulla and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2000 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S./Russian collaboration that used the Space Shuttle and the Mir Space Station as platforms for acquiring remote sensing information about the Earth between 1996 and 1998 produced significant scientific results on hydrology, land use, and changes in some of the Earth's most dynamic environments. Many of these outstanding images are presented here and compared with photographs taken during earlier missions, allowing detection of changes on the Earth's surface. Studies reported in this fascinating volume include observations of El Niño-related phenomena; fluctuating water levels of the Caspian and Aral Seas; smoke, dust, and aerosols in the atmosphere; urban land use changes; and drought in the southeastern United States and Mexico. This valuable information, and the techniques used to gather it, will form the basis for future remote sensing studies to be conducted from the International Space Station.

Book THE DYNAMIC EARTH SYSTEM Fourth Edition

Download or read book THE DYNAMIC EARTH SYSTEM Fourth Edition written by PATWARDHAN, A. M. and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressed to the undergraduate and postgraduate students pursuing studies in the broad interdisciplinary field of Earth Science, this thoroughly revised book, in its Fourth Edition, is aimed at facilitating the comprehension between the pre-planetary history and the subsequent geological processes of the Earth system. This is done keeping in mind the current interest in exoplanets and the evolution of the life supporting crustal composition of the Earth, much different from that of the other planets, in terms of the Earth's internal heat, density distribution and the strong magnetic field due to the dominant presence of metallic Fe in its core. The new edition draws the attention of the reader to the different surface gravity features and the internal compositional structures of the Earth, Moon and the Sun acquired during the Hadean. Examples of lithospheric movements, rifting, subduction and the continued mantle-crust interaction from Indian and Southeast Asian geology would bring the readers close to interlinking these tectonic processes to the genesis of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks as well as to the episodes of mineralizations. Emphasizing these dynamic processes, the text focuses on the constitution of oceans, the causes of mass extinctions and the evolution of life forms, the biogeochemical cycles of elements, and also, on the life protecting ozone layer of the stratosphere, all unique to the Earth System. The student is sensitized towards the natural hazards of frequent volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and climate change besides explicating the threats posed by global warming, atmospheric and hydrosphere pollution, caused by the industrial emanations and indiscrete waste disposal. KEY FEATURES • Each chapter is replete with examples, illustrations, tables and figures to make reading more fruitful and enriching. • Chapter-end summary helps in recapitulation of the concepts discussed. • Additional Reading provided at the end of each chapter directs the readers to the vast source of information. NEW TO THE FOURTH EDITION Considering the growing global interest in locating a habitable exoplanet like the Earth, and in exploring the Moon and the Mars, the present edition thoroughly updates the information about • the geochemical processes, unique to the Earth System, that gave rise to the life supportive crust, oceans and the atmosphere. • the role played by plate tectonics in forming the igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, mineral deposits, and also, in the evolution of life. • the geo-environmental hazards of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, droughts and desertification. • the growing adoption of solar, hydro, wind and nuclear energy in power generation, and in management of clean environment. TARGET AUDIENCE • M.Sc. (Geology, Applied Geology, Geoinformatics, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Geography, Earth Science, and Environmental Science) • B.Sc. (Geology, Applied Geology)

Book Perspectives on a Dynamic Earth

Download or read book Perspectives on a Dynamic Earth written by T.R. Paton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to put into practice these precepts of Popper and Koestler as far as they can be applied to the Earth sciences at an elementary level. It is felt that the time is ripe for such a presentation, for the revolution that has taken place over the past 20 years within the Earth sciences has made more people directly aware of the way science works and of the necessity of knowing its history to achieve a full understanding of the problems involved. Emerging from the revolution has been the immensely unifying and extremely fruitful concept of plate tectonics, and developments leading to its establishment form the core of the book (Chs 4, 5 & 6). However, to see plate tectonics in context, it is necessary to look at what happened before, and this is done in the first three chapters. Chapter 1 is concerned with the development of ideas about the shape, size and mass of the Earth, which led to broad concepts about the Earth's structure and finally to a model of a cooling, contracting Earth, capable of explaining geological history and the major topographic features of the Earth. Chapter 2 goes on to show how even though the acceptance of this idea gradually broke down in the first half of the 20th century, possible alternatives, which are now at the core of plate tectonics, were also rejected.

Book Our Dynamic Earth A Primer

Download or read book Our Dynamic Earth A Primer written by Matthew R. Bennett and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students taking undergraduate degrees in geography, ecology, earth science, and environmental science frequently take an introductory unit in Physical Geography. Some will have not done any geography since their early teens, while others have more recent knowledge. This range of backgrounds can be challenging for both the instructor and the student, this primer aims to help. A primer is a readable introduction to a subject, more technical than a piece of popular science, but less detailed than a specialist textbook. It aims to give the reader a platform in a subject with which they may be unfamiliar, so that they can proceed simultaneously, or sequentially, to more advanced texts and information. Ideally the primer should have something for those without any knowledge, while also challenge and entertaining those who do. Not quite bedtime reading, but a step in that direction. Our Dynamic Earth introduces students to the Earth's origins, to plate tectonics, atmospheric and oceanographic circulation, as well as to a range of Earth surface processes. Idea to get you started in your studies.

Book The Dynamic Loss of Earth s Radiation Belts

Download or read book The Dynamic Loss of Earth s Radiation Belts written by Allison Jaynes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dynamic Loss of Earth's Radiation Belts: From Loss in the Magnetosphere to Particle Precipitation in the Atmosphere presents a timely review of data from various explorative missions, including the Van Allen Probes, the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission (which aims to determine magnetopause losses), the completion of four BARREL balloon campaigns, and several CubeSat missions focusing on precipitation losses. This is the first book in the area to include a focus on loss, and not just acceleration and radial transport. Bringing together two communities, the book includes contributions from experts with knowledge in both precipitation mechanisms and the effects on the atmosphere. There is a direct link between what gets lost in the magnetospheric radiation environment and the energy deposited in the layers of our atmosphere. Very recently, NASA’s Living With a Star program identified a new, targeted research topic that addresses this question, highlighting the timeliness of this precise science. The Dynamic Loss of Earth's Radiation Belts brings together scientists from the space and atmospheric science communities to examine both the causes and effects of particle loss in the magnetosphere. Examines both the causes and effects of particle loss in the magnetosphere from multiple perspectives Presents interdisciplinary content that bridges the gap, through communication and collaboration, between the magnetospheric and atmospheric communities Fills a gap in the literature by focusing on loss in the radiation belt, which is especially timely based on data from the Van Allen Probes, the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission, and other projects Includes contributions from various experts in the field that is organized and collated by a clear-and-consistent editorial team

Book Comparative Biogeography

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lynne Parenti

Download or read book Comparative Biogeography written by Lynne Parenti and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2009-11-18 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To unravel the complex shared history of the Earth and its life forms, biogeographers analyze patterns of biodiversity, species distribution, and geological history. So far, the field of biogeography has been fragmented into divergent systematic and evolutionary approaches, with no overarching or unifying research theme or method. In this text, Lynne Parenti and Malte Ebach address this discord and outline comparative tools to unify biogeography. Rooted in phylogenetic systematics, this comparative biogeographic approach offers a comprehensive empirical framework for discovering and deciphering the patterns and processes of the distribution of life on Earth. The authors cover biogeography from its fundamental ideas to the most effective ways to implement them. Real-life examples illustrate concepts and problems, including the first comparative biogeographical analysis of the Indo-West Pacific, an introduction to biogeographical concepts rooted in the earth sciences, and the integration of phylogeny, evolution and earth history.

Book Tectonic Faults

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark R. Handy
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 0262083620
  • Pages : 461 pages

Download or read book Tectonic Faults written by Mark R. Handy and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists examine tectonic faulting on all scales--from seismic fault slip to the formation of mountain ranges--and discuss its connection to a wide range of global phenomena, including long-term climate change and evolution. Tectonic faults are sites of localized motion, both at the Earth's surface and within its dynamic interior. Faulting is directly linked to a wide range of global phenomena, including long-term climate change and the evolution of hominids, the opening and closure of oceans, and the rise and fall of mountain ranges. In Tectonic Faults, scientists from a variety of disciplines explore the connections between faulting and the processes of the Earth's atmosphere, surface, and interior. They consider faults and faulting from many different vantage points--including those of surface analysts, geochemists, material scientists, and physicists--and in all scales, from seismic fault slip to moving tectonic plates. They address basic issues, including the imaging of faults from Earth's surface to the base of the lithosphere and deeper, the structure and rheology of fault rocks, and the role of fluids and melt on the physical properties of deforming rock. They suggest strategies for understanding the interaction of faulting with topography and climate, predicting fault behavior, and interpreting the impacts on the rock record and the human environment. Using an Earth Systems approach, Tectonic Faults provides a new understanding of feedback between faulting and Earth's atmospheric, surface, and interior processes, and recommends new approaches for advancing knowledge of tectonic faults as an integral part of our dynamic planet.

Download or read book Dynamics of the Earth written by V. I. Ferronsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their search for solutions to problems concerning the dynamics of the Earth as a self-gravitating body, the authors have applied the fundamentals found in their book “Jacobi Dynamics” (1987, Reidel). First, satellite observations have shown that the Earth does not remain in hydrostatic equilibrium, which forms the physical basis of modern geodynamics. Secondly, satellite data have established a relationship between the planet’s polar moment of inertia and the potential of the Earth’s outer force field, which proves the most basic point of Jacobi dynamics. This allowed the authors to revise their derivation of the classical virial theorem, introducing the concept of a volumetric force and volumetric moment, and so to obtain a generalized virial theorem in the form of Jacobi’s equation. The main dynamical effects are: the kinetic energy of oscillation of the interacting particles, which explains the physical meaning and nature of gravitational forces; separation of shells of a self-gravitating body with respect to its mass density; differences in angular velocities of the shell’s rotation; continuity in variance of the potential of the outer gravitational force field, together with reductions in the envelope of the interacting masses (volumetric center of gravity); the nature of Earth, Moon and satellite precession; the nature and generating mechanism of the planet’s electromagnetic field; the common nature of gravitational and electromagnetic energy, and other related issues. The work is a logical continuation of the book "Jacobi Dynamics" and is intended for researchers, teachers and students engaged in theoretical and experimental research in various branches of astronomy, geophysics, planetology and cosmogony, and for students of celestial, statistical, quantum and relativistic mechanics and hydrodynamics.
