Book Dynamic Crack Tip Opening Displacement CTOD Measurements with Application to Fracture Toughness Testing

Download or read book Dynamic Crack Tip Opening Displacement CTOD Measurements with Application to Fracture Toughness Testing written by JM. Shapiro and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) measurements were made 100 üm behind the crack tip on standard three-point bend specimens using a laser-based interferometric technique. Four materials (SAE-01 steel, 4340 steel, HY-100 steel, and tungsten) were tested at loading rates ranging from quasi-static (K ? 1 MPa• m1⁄2/s) to dynamic (K ? 106 MPa • m1⁄2/s).

Book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Evaluation by Measurement of CTOD Crack Tip Opening Displacement

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Evaluation by Measurement of CTOD Crack Tip Opening Displacement written by William N Sharpe (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantification of the dynamic fracture toughness of structural materials is essential to a wide range of problems - from nuclear accidents to ordnance applications. However, the difficulties associated with accurate measurements of cracks under dynamic loading are considerable. Thus there are no standardized procedures and few reliable results. This work describes a systematic study of the dynamic fracture toughness of SAE-01 tool steel, 4340 and HY100 steels and a tungsten, using the ISDG (Interferometric Strain/Displacement Gage) system which has very high frequency resolution. The major advantage of the method is that information is obtained very close to the crack tip, so that stress wave loading effects are accounted for. A detailed error analysis gives an uncertainty of -10% to +20% in the determination of fracture toughness, which compares with + or - 20% for published work.

Download or read book Shallow Crack Fracture Mechanics Toughness Tests and Applications written by Gyoujin Cho and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last decade there has been an increasing awareness that use of standards deeply notched fracture mechanics test specimens can result in substantial over-or-under-assessments of the real fracture toughness associated with shallow surface cracks.

Book Engineering Aspects of Crack Tip Opening Displacement Fracture Toughness Testing

Download or read book Engineering Aspects of Crack Tip Opening Displacement Fracture Toughness Testing written by ST. Rolfe and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) fracture behavior of four pressure vessel steels and one ship steel has been conducted. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the fracture behavior of the steels, to study the effects of CTOD testing variables, to examine various methods of evaluating test records, and to study the relationships among several fracture toughness parameters. The five steels studied, A508, A533, A516, A517, and A131, (Unified Numbering System [UNS] K12766, K12539, K02700, K11856, and K02102) had yield strengths from 240 to 750 MPa. In addition, three specimen sizes of the A533 and A516 steels were studied.

Book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Measurements on Small Charpy Specimens 97 A Preliminary Study

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Measurements on Small Charpy Specimens 97 A Preliminary Study written by WN. Sharpe and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique for measuring dynamic fracture toughness on small specimens is described and preliminary data are presented. Dynamic crack tip opening displacements (CTODs) are measured with laser interferometry over times as short as 10 ?s. The measured displacement is converted to stress intensity values via the equations of linear elastic fracture mechanics and the peak value obtained is taken as the dynamic fracture toughness.

Book Dynamic Measurement of Crack Tip Opening Displacement

Download or read book Dynamic Measurement of Crack Tip Opening Displacement written by AS. Douglas and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crack opening displacements were measured at two positions very close to the tip of a crack in three-point bend specimens that were loaded explosively. Indentations were placed across the fatigue precrack at locations 100 ?m and 200 ?m behind the tip. These indentations, when illuminated with a laser, generate fringe patterns in space, and the motion of these fringes is proportional to the displacement between them. The fringe motion was monitored with photomultiplier tubes and an oscilloscope and converted to crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD). Explosive loading of the specimens generated stress-intensity factors increasing at a rate of 3 x 106 MPa m1/2/s.

Book Fatigue Crack Front Shape and Its Effect on Fracture Toughness Measurements

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Front Shape and Its Effect on Fracture Toughness Measurements written by OL. Towers and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shapes of fatigue cracks in fracture toughness test specimens have been reviewed for a sample of approximately 680 three-point bend specimens. Up to 17% of this sample would be rejected for plane strain fracture toughness for Mode I loading KIc test procedures because of fatigue crack front shape. The corresponding rejection rate to crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) procedures is 3%. The results of published work for aluminum alloys indicate that relaxation of the KIc testing standards' restrictions on shape would not cause undue errors. This indication, however, appears to conflict with a computer model of curved crack fronts in a compact tension specimen. The suggestion is therefore made that the calculation procedures for fracture toughness determinations should be made more appropriate to the curved crack fronts usually observed, before the limits quoted in the standards are relaxed. To reduce the number of crack length measurements the removal of one limit on crack front shape is suggested. Finally, experimental justification for the change from the limits on crack front shape of British Standard Draft for Development DD19 [1972]) to those of the current CTOD testing standard, British Standard Methods for Crack Opening Displacement (COD) Testing BS 5762 (1979), is presented.
