Book Mechanical Behavior of Silicon Carbide 2014 Aluminum Composite

Download or read book Mechanical Behavior of Silicon Carbide 2014 Aluminum Composite written by S-C Chou and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The composite material consists of 25 volume percent of silicon carbide whiskers in 2014-T4 aluminum matrix. Specimens were taken from hot-isostatically-pressed cylindrical billets and tested at various loading conditions and strain rates. Tension and compression tests were performed at strain rates of 10-4 and 5 S-1 to determine the effect of strain rate. Bauschinger effect was investigated by precompressing specimens to two strain levels followed by reversing load to tension until fracture occurred. Torsion tests were carried out to determine the relationship between torque and twist angle. The KIc-value was determined by testing short-rod specimens. The tensile properties and KIc were compared with those of 2014-T4 aluminum to demonstrate the effect of silicon carbide whisker reinforcement on the properties of matrix materials.

Book Investigation of Quasi static Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Functionally Graded Sic particulate Reinforced Aluminium Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Investigation of Quasi static Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Functionally Graded Sic particulate Reinforced Aluminium Metal Matrix Composites written by Uygar Yıldırım and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functionally Graded Material (FGM) systems composing of SiC-particulate reinforced Al Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) of varying reinforcement volume fractions were prepared using a powder metallurgy route and investigated for mechanical properties under compression at quasi-static and high strain rates. High strain rate tests in the range of 1000-3000s-1 were conducted using a compression type Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) set-up. The compression true stress-strain curves of the tested elastic-plastic FGM systems were satisfactorily approximated using the equal-stress model while the high strain rate testing in SHPB involved complex wave propagation events between the layers of FGM. The samples failed under compression at high strain rates particularly at the interface of the layer of the lowest impedance. This result was also confirmed with LSDYNA3 finite element modeling of a 10 and 20% SiC layered composite material system. The model has shown that higher compressive stress-time history occurred in the layer of the lowest impedance during SHPB testing.Microscopic observation of the failed samples was further shown that the mechanically weakest link of the layered samples was the interfaces between the layers. This was solely due to the formation of a thin oxide layer at the interfaces. The modeling results were further found to be promising in modeling of FGM systems for future investigations.

Book Effect of Weight Percentage of Silicon Carbide SiC Reinforcement Particles on Mechanical Behavior of Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite Al MMC

Download or read book Effect of Weight Percentage of Silicon Carbide SiC Reinforcement Particles on Mechanical Behavior of Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite Al MMC written by Engku Amalina Syazana Ku Mohd Nazri and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon carbide particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites have been developed over past few decades, owing to their excellent properties like light weight, high elastic modulus and wear resistance. Thus, the silicon carbide particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites are expected to have many applications in aerospace, aircraft, automobile and electronic industries. In this study, aluminum metal matrix composites containing several weight percentages of reinforcement particles were prepared by using powder metallurgy method. The main steps in powder metallurgy are blending, compacting and sintering. The experiments were performed on different composition of silicon carbide powder in the composite. The study presents the results of experimental investigation on mechanical behavior of silicon carbide particle reinforced aluminum matrix. The influence of reinforced ratio of 0, 5, 10 and 15 weight percentage of silicon carbide particles on mechanical behavior was examined. The effect of different weight percentage of silicon carbide in composite on hardness and microstructure was studied. Digital image analyzer was used to characterize the composites. The effect of weight percentage of silicon carbide on hardness of composites was investigated by using Vickers hardness Test. It was observed that the distribution of silicon carbide particles was uniform. The hardness of the composites increased with increasing reinforcement element addition in it. In addition, and for the purpose of verification of the present theory, other published work was also compared and found to be in very good correlation with the predicted result.
