Book excerpt: The Dynamic Commitment Wargame Series, in support of the Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR), provided an innovative and effective means of evaluating the suitability of projected U.S. forces to respond to the range of challenges in the defense environment anticipated by the Joint Strategy Review. The Dynamic Commitment Wargame Series informed participants regarding the expected future demand on forces, such that Services were better able to articulate the effect of the examined force options. Key findings included: The projected U.S. Force (POM Force) is suitable, though stressed, to execute the strategy. The POM Force is the Program Objective Memorandum five-year proposal of each Service that translates requirements and resources into forces, manpower and material. Forward presence remains a cornerstone of strategy execution. The current force structure is fragile. Preserving the effectiveness of uniquely configured platforms or units in the face of force reductions, must receive careful consideration. Despite recognized limitations, the potential for the Dynamic Commitment gaming methodology is significant, including its ability to allow examination of near-term alternative force structures.
Download or read book Commitment written by Pankaj Ghemawat and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1991-08-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To create a competitive advantage, a company must commit itself to developing a set of capabilities superior to its competitors; But such commitments tend to be costly and hard to reverse. How then, should a company decide which broad path, or strategy, to commit itself to? And how are competition and uncertainty to be accounted for in that decision? In this brilliant reassessment of how companies gain and sustain competitive advantage, Pankaj Ghemawat consolidates contemporary research in economics and other disciplines into a comprehensive yet practical framework for comparing commitments to strategically distinct options. This framework will help managers address specific strategic choices such as entry, exit, vertical/horizontal integration, capacity expansion, and innovation, as well as choices of generic strategy. Step by systematic step, Ghemawat provides managers with the tools and techniques they need to improve the quality of the choices that they make. Specifically, Ghemawat discusses: * how to identify the choices that are truly strategic -- that involve commitment -- before rather than after the fact * how to analyze the short-run and long-run competitive positions implied by a particular strategic option * how to assess the sustainability of superior competitive positions over time * how to account for the flexibility afforded by a particular option in dealing with future uncertainties * how to deal with both honest mistakes and deliberate distortions in the process of choice This pathbreaking book will help managers invest in the future. Its logic applies to choices involving disinvestment as well as those involving investment -- and to choices that embody elements of both. Its logic can be used for diagnostic purposes, such as the valuation of business, and most broadly, it win force managers to think about important issues that they may have tended to ignore. Ghemawat's discussion of these important ideas is concise, studded with detailed examples, based on rigorous research and, above all, practical. It will become required reading for thoughtful practitioners as well as practitionersto-be in the 1990s.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Army underwent a decade of significant transformation between 1987 and 1997 that affected strategy, force requirements, structure, and basing requirements. The end of the Cold War provided the initial impetus for defense reshaping and drove the pace and depth of change. Reductions in forces and installations, and deferred procurement of the next generation of military equipment overlapped with efforts to adapt the Army to a new global security environment.

Download or read book The Art of Commitment Pacing written by Thomas Meyer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced guidance for institutional investors, academics, and researchers on how to manage a portfolio of private capital funds The Art of Commitment Pacing: Engineering Allocations to Private Capital provides a much-needed analysis of the issues that face investors as they incorporate closed ended-funds targeting illiquid private assets (such as private equity, private debt, infrastructure, real estate) into their portfolios. These private capital funds, once considered "alternative" and viewed as experimental, are becoming an increasingly standard component of institutional asset allocations. However, many investors still follow management approaches that remain anchored in the portfolio theory for liquid assets but that often lead to disappointing results when applied to portfolios of private capital funds where practically investors remain committed over nearly a decade. When planning for such commitments, investment managers and researchers are faced with practical questions such as: How to measure and control the real exposure to private assets? How to forecast cash-flows for commitments to private capital funds? What ranges for their returns and lifetime are realistic, and how can the investor’s skill be factored in? Over which dimensions should a portfolio be diversified and how much diversification is enough? How can the impact of co-investments or secondaries be modelled? How to design pacing plans that lead to resilient and efficient portfolios? What stress scenarios should be considered and how can they be applied? These are just examples of the many questions for which answers are provided. The Art of Commitment Pacing describes established and new methodologies for building up and controlling allocations to such investments. This book offers a systematic approach for building up and controlling allocations to such investments. The Art of Commitment Pacing is a valuable addition to the libraries of investment managers, as well as portfolio and risk managers involved in institutional investment. The book will also be of interest to advanced students of finance, researchers, and other practitioners who require a detailed understanding of forecasting and portfolio management methodologies.

Download or read book Supply Chain Management written by Bowon Kim and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of Supply Chain Management (SCM) was revised to appeal to a wider readership besides students taking SCM courses. Global supply chain managers and researchers in the fields of SCM and operations strategy would find it a useful reference. Rather than discuss the technical issues of SCM, the book focuses on the strategic perspectives and approaches of SCM. Students learn to identify SCM issues from the top management's perspective. The book also presents real-world managerial problems and incorporates case studies for connecting theories with practices. By exploring the fundamental issues of SCM, managers acquire a new learning perspective that enables them to solve problems in a more sustainable and innovative manner rather than use short-term, ad hoc solutions. Finally, it distils various theoretical concepts to allow researchers to observe real SCM issues in a managerial context which allows for practical, meaningful and impactful research to be carried out.

The words and phrases of their technical and vernacular languages, which are used to communicate what is essentially a non-verbal activity, have been collected in rehearsal classes and workshops by interviews, and from published sources. In this first collection of its kind Valerie Preston-Dunlop extends her selection of verbal language to include the various social and theatrical domains of dance.

Book excerpt: Due to the lack of political salience that financial stability policy enjoys in tranquil economic times, this policy field lends itself particularly well to capture – the more so the more important the role of banks is in the financial system. Gundbert Scherf’s research focuses on this nexus between integrated banking, supranational monetary policy and national banking regulation. He finds that national level differences in financial systems and related institutions explain and drive variation in regulatory financial stability policy across countries.
