Book Dynamic Buckling of a Thin Cylindrical Shell Under Axial Impact

Download or read book Dynamic Buckling of a Thin Cylindrical Shell Under Axial Impact written by H. E. Lindberg and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buckling of thin cylindrical shells from axial impact is studied under the assumption that initial imperfections can be approximated by 'white noise'. Linear small deflection theory is used to calculate the resulting growth of the normal modes and a statistical analysis gives the expected values for the 'preferred' axial and circumferential wavelengths. Very high-speed photographs (240,000 frames/sec) of shells buckling under axial impact show excellent agreement with the theory and demonstrate that large deflection buckling follows the pattern established by the early linear motion. Book Dynamic Buckling of Shell Structures Subject to Longitudinal Impact

Download or read book Dynamic Buckling of Shell Structures Subject to Longitudinal Impact written by Anthony P. Coppa and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and theoretical studies of the buckling and collapse of circular cylindrical and conical shells under longitudinal impact are described. Various conditions of loading were investigated such as impact with rigid, fluid, and granular media, and such effects as initial geometrical imperfections, edge support, and loading asymmetry were included. In addition, the effect of axial impact at velocities up to 391 ft/sec on the buckling of thin cylindrical shells was studied experimentally. Finally, three problems, relating to the experiments were studied theoretically: (1) the dynamic buckling of a circular cylindrical shell subject to an exial loading which varies linearly with time, using the nonlinear theory, (2) dynamic buckling of a circular cylindrical shell subject to a constant velocity end displacement, including the effects of plasticity and incorporating extremely large deflections, and (3) the inextensional shortening and collapse modes of conical shells for the complete range of end shortening.

Book Dynamic Buckling of Shell Structures Subject to Longitudinal Impact

Download or read book Dynamic Buckling of Shell Structures Subject to Longitudinal Impact written by A. P. Coppa and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations dealing with the buckling of thin cylindrical and conical shells subject to axial impact are described. The studies consisted of experimental and theoretical efforts directed toward obtaing a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the dynamic buckling behavior of such shells under a variety of conditions. The conditions studied include different longitudinal conditions imposed on the impacted end of the shell and internal pressurization. In addition, methods of increasing the specific energy dissipation capacity of shells subject to axial impact were studied. A number of interesting results were obtained. It was demonstrated experimentally that buckling of a cylindrical shell is initiated during the first passage of the axial compression stress wave due to the initial impact when the impact velocity is sufficiently high. Another significant experimental result obtained is that the asymmetrical (quasi-developable) form of shell buckling occurs as a result of a smooth transition from the symmetrical ("ring") form of bucklingin some thin cylindrical shells subjected to an axially symmetric axial impact. Analytical subject to a constant velocity end displacement. The method utilizes the finite deflection theory and is a refinement of the procedure due to A.S. Volmir. It shows that both the upper critical stress and the number of circumferential waves increase and the time to initiate buckling decreases with increasing velocity of impact. These trends are in agreement with the analytical results of Volmir and a phenomenological theory due to Coppa.

Book Buckling Load of Thin Circular Cylindrical Shells Formed by Plastic Expansion

Download or read book Buckling Load of Thin Circular Cylindrical Shells Formed by Plastic Expansion written by LeRoy R. Guist and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was made to determine the axial buckling load of cylinders formed by a process of plastic expansion due to internal pressure. Test cylinders 21.6 cm in diameter, 0.330 mm thick, were formed by plastic expansion from 15.23 cm diameter commercial, welded, type 304 stainless steel tubing. Buckling loads from 50 to 71 percent of the classical value showed a definite relationship with the local decrease in curvature due to the worst imperfections. Buckling loads were substantially higher than expected in relation to the amplitude of their geometric imperfections. The results indicate that the process of plastic expansion may provide a means of producing certain types of cylinders of unusually high buckling load at low cost.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book originally appeared as a text prepared for the Defense Nuclear Agency to summarize research on dynamic pulse buckling, by the authors and their colleagues at SRI International, during the period from 1960 to 1980. The original printing of 300 copies by the DNA Press was followed shortly by a small second printing to meet the demand by readers who heard of the book from the primary recipients. This supply was also quickly exhausted, to researchers and practicing engineers outside the DNA community and to academics who wanted to include the material in courses on elastic and plastic stability of structures. Commercial publication by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers was therefore undertaken to meet the needs of this broader community. The objective of the book was to gather into a cohesive whole material that had been published in reports and the open literature during the two decade period. In the process of knitting this material together, a substantial amount of new work was done. The book therefore contains many new results never published in the open literature.
