Book excerpt: The turn of the last century, amid the excesses of the Gilded Age, variety became a key notion for Americans'a sign of national progress and development, reassurance that the modern nation would not fall into monotonous dullness or disorderly chaos. Carrie Tirado Bramen pursues this idea through the works of a wide range of regional and cosmopolitan writers, journalists, theologians, and politicians who rewrote the narrative of American exceptionalism through a celebration of variety. Exploring cultural and institutional spheres ranging from intra-urban walking tours in popular magazines to the 1893 World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago, she shows how the rhetoric of variety became naturalized and nationalized as quintessentially American and inherently democratic. By focusing on the uses of the term in the work of William James, Anna Julia Cooper, W. E. B. Du Bois, Hamlin Garland, and Wong Chin Foo, among many others, Bramen reveals how the perceived innocence and goodness of variety were used to construct contradictory and mutually exclusive visions of modern Americanism. Bramen's innovation is to look at the debates of a century ago that established diversity as the distinctive feature of U.S. culture. In the late-nineteenth-century conception, which emphasized the openness of variety while at the same time acknowledging its limits, she finds a useful corrective to the contemporary tendency to celebrate the United States as a postmodern melange or a carnivalesque utopia of hybridity and difference. Book excerpt: With the current state of foreign affairs, the terms "Americanism" and "Americanization" sometimes take on an unexpected--and an unflattering--connotation. Americanism essentially involves values, beliefs, ideals, goods and practices in local settings outside the United States that are in some way related or attributed to American influence. While the validity of this influence may be under scrutiny, it requires a detailed historical--and sometimes cultural--analysis to understand all the dynamics and implications of Americanization. A variety of factors contributes to this influence, including the preoccupation and reception of the relevant culture itself. For instance, many European countries have at times demonstrated a preoccupation with all things American which was not necessarily swayed by any action of America itself. The overall actualization of Americanization, however, encompasses a number of societal dimensions, including power differentials in the exchange processes concerned. Informed by a history of relevant developments since the early nineteenth century, this volume presents an in-depth critical analysis of the Americanization process. Beginning with a survey of early European preoccupations with things American, the book goes on to discuss European concerns regarding American influence after World War II. The work then looks at Americanism and its influence within the United States itself, especially regarding developments during the New Deal and beyond. The primary goal of the analysis is the construction of an interpretative framework, allowing for a more balanced approach to the study of Americanism abroad. Written from a critical, social-emancipatory perspective, the author's approach blends economic, military, social, political, cultural and psychological dimensions as well as an examination of the ways in which these areas interact. Book excerpt: The American Revolution brought a new and vital power to the world and created the political, social, and intellectual conditions that continue to govern the lives of Americans today. Jurgen Gebhardt's Americanism, originally published in German, analyzes the origins of the American public philosophy. Gebhardt uses the term civil theology - which he describes as a belief system grounded in social and religious ideals and based upon the principle "one nation, under God " - to set forth the character of that philosophy. The focus of Gebhardt's study is the relationship between the concepts of founding and order in the self-understanding of the country's early leaders. This focus leads to the core of the symbolic self-interpretation of American society. Through careful scrutiny of the writings of the Founding Fathers - and with a special emphasis on those of John Adams - Gebhardt studies the philosophical and Christian origins of the American ideals of republicanism and revolution. He then considers the process by which the design for living envisaged by the founders embodied in the concept of the paradigmatic republic - found expression in the political, economic, and social institutions of the new society, producing a form of civil theology that was soon identified as Americanism. Americanism raised a universal claim that God, the world, humanity, society, and history all existed within the cosmos of American observances. But in the twentieth century, according to Gebhardt, Americanism has been subverted by the emergence of an individualism unconcerned with pursuit of the common good and by the concomitant rise of an industrialized society at odds with the republic's political-spiritual ethos. Jurgen Gebhardt casts an outsider's keen and observant eye on the structure of the American Republic. Americanism is a first-rate study of the philosophical origins of the American paradigm of order and of how the American quest for a good polity has failed in our time.

But it can be a curse when perceptions of deviation lead to threat and resentment. It can also be a curse for minorities who are attached to their American identity but also perceive discrimination. The notion of American identity is a predisposition that the government has good reason to cultivate, but also good reason to approach with caution.

Most of these nationalistic performances were formulized during the early twentieth century and driven to new heights by the panic surrounding national identity during World War I. In To Become an American Leslie A. Hahner argues that, in part, the Americanization movement engendered the transformation of patriotism during this period. Americanization was a massive campaign designed to fashion immigrants into perfect Americans—those who were loyal in word, deed, and heart. The larger outcome of this widespread movement was a dramatic shift in the nation’s understanding of Americanism. Employing a rhetorical lens to analyze the visual and aesthetic practices of Americanization, Hahner contends that Americanization not only tutored students in the practices of citizenship but also created a normative visual metric that modified how Americans would come to understand, interpret, and judge their own patriotism and that of others.
