Book The Oxford Handbook of Administrative Justice

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Administrative Justice written by Marc Hertogh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The core animating feature of administrative justice scholarship is the desire to understand how justice is achieved through the delivery of public services and the actions, inactions, and decision-making of administrative bodies. The study of administrative justice also encompasses the redress systems by which people can challenge administrative bodies to seek the correction of injustices. For a long time now, scholars have been interested in administrative justice, but without necessarily framing their work as such. Rather than existing under the rubric of administrative justice, much of the research undertaken has existed within sub-categories of disciplines, such as law, sociology, public policy, politics, and public administration. Consequently, although aspects of the topic have attracted rich contributions across such disciplines, administrative justice has rarely been studied or taught in a manner that integrates these areas of research more systematically. This Handbook signals a major change of approach. Drawing together a group of world-leading scholars of administrative justice from a range of disciplines, The Oxford Handbook of Administrative Justice shows how administrative justice is a vibrant, complex, and contested field that is best understood as an area of inquiry in its own right, rather than through traditional disciplinary silos"--

Book Cruel Inhuman or Degrading Treatment

Download or read book Cruel Inhuman or Degrading Treatment written by Michael Adler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-22 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book subjects the largely hidden phenomenon of benefit sanctions in the UK to sustained examination and critique. It comprises twelve chapters dealing with the terms ‘cruel’, ‘inhuman’ and ‘degrading’ that are used as a benchmark for assessing benefit sanctions; benefit sanctions as a matter of public concern; the historical development of benefit sanctions in the UK; changes in the scope and severity of benefit sanctions; conditionality and the changing relationship between the citizen and the state; the impact and effectiveness of benefit sanctions; benefit sanctions and administrative justice; the role of law in protecting the right to a social minimum; a comparison of benefit sanctions with court fines; benefit sanctions and the rule of law; and what, if anything, can be done about benefit sanctions. Each chapter ends with a paragraph that attempts to highlight the most salient points in that chapter, and the book ends with a short conclusion in which benefit sanctions are assessed against the chosen benchmark.

Download or read book Welfare Conditionality written by Beth Watts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welfare conditionality has become an idea of global significance in recent years. A ‘hot topic’ in North America, Australia, and across Europe, it has been linked to austerity politics, and the rise of foodbanks and destitution. In the Global South, where publicly funded welfare protection systems are often absent, conditional approaches have become a key tool employed by organisations pursuing human development goals. The essence of welfare conditionality lies in requirements for people to behave in prescribed ways in order to access cash benefits or other welfare support. These conditions are typically enforced through benefit ‘sanctions’ of various kinds, reflecting a new vision of ‘welfare’, focused more on promoting ‘pro-social’ behaviour than on protecting people against classic ‘social risks’ like unemployment. This new book in Routledge’s Key Ideas series charts the rise of behavioural conditionality in welfare systems across the globe, its appeal to politicians of Right and Left, and its application to a growing range of social problems. Crucially it explores why, in the context of widespread use of conditional approaches as well as apparently strong public support, both the efficacy and the ethics of welfare conditionality remain so controversial. As such, Welfare Conditionality is essential reading for students, researchers, and commentators in social and public policy, as well as those designing and implementing welfare policies.

Book Getting in staying in and getting on

Download or read book Getting in staying in and getting on written by Liz Sayce and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-06-09 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review, looking at disability employment support, and entitled "Getting in, staying in and getting on", seeks to ensure that disabled people have the opportunities and support needed to meet their employment aspirations. The focus of the review has set out a number of recommendations for employment support and the author has focused on three areas to promote this objective. (1) To set out the types of support that today's young disabled people will want in a future economy; (2) Enshrining the right to work objectives as set out in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; (3) To make a case for cross-Government work to unlock the big enablers of employment, that is "Getting in, staying in and getting on" , which includes raising the aspirations of what disabled people can achieve. For "getting in" this should include more disabled people doing apprenticeships, work experience and work placements; for "staying in" there should be better promotion for Access to Work for retension and for "getting on" there should be greater encouragement of disabled people in setting up businesses and gaining skills for career development. The publication is divided into 5 chapters, with appendices.

Book In Defence of Welfare 2

Download or read book In Defence of Welfare 2 written by Foster, Liam and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2015-04-17 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Defence of Welfare 2 brings together nearly fifty short pieces from a diverse range of social policy academics and commentators, policy makers and journalists that focus on developments in ‘welfare’ over the last five years of Coalition Government. Following on from the successful publication In Defence of Welfare, (Social Policy Association 2011) published in response to the government's first Major Spending Review), this second volume reflects on the impact of recent welfare reforms and explores how inequalities in income, wealth and well-being have become firmly entrenched in society. It considers how welfare can and should develop going forward in order to promote a more equal society.
