Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together papers that examine American literary texts and cultural phenomena as manifestations and/or expressions of nostalgia. Inspired by Svetlana Boym’s seminal study The Future of Nostalgia (2001), the authors of the sixteen chapters demonstrate that this sentiment proves to be a useful key in the process, opening up new interpretive vistas and enabling new critical insights. The experience that comes under scrutiny in these texts is informed by the fundamental division into a certain “present,” which is the domain of insatiability, and a certain “past” – the locus of at-homeness, often irretrievably lost.

Book Images of the Anthropocene in Speculative Fiction

Download or read book Images of the Anthropocene in Speculative Fiction written by Tereza Dedinová and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to demonstrate that speculative fiction provides a valuable contribution to the discussion about the challenges of the Anthropocene, Images of the Anthropocene in Speculative Fiction investigates a range of novels whose subject matter pertains to various aspects of the Anthropocene. These include the destruction and protection of the natural environment, the relationship between human and non-human inhabitants of the planet, the role of myth in the shaping of and combat against the Anthropocene, the political dimensions of the Anthropocene, the ensuing threat of the Apocalypse, and the role of post-apocalyptic narratives. To explore these topics our authors examine the works of Patricia Briggs, M.R. Carey, Dmitry Glukhovsky, Ursula K. Le Guin, N.K. Jemisin, Stephenie Meyer, China Miéville, James Patterson, Maggie Stiefvater, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Scott Westfield. Their essays demonstrate that speculative fiction, given its ability to pursue scenarios of alternative history and present familiar things in an unfamiliar way, can alter the readers’ perception of their duties and responsibilities towards their communities and the world, so that the threat of human-wrought destruction might ultimately be averted.

Book Nostalgia Now

  • Author : Michael Hviid Jacobsen

Download or read book Nostalgia Now written by Michael Hviid Jacobsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the nature of nostalgia as an important emotion in contemporary society and social theory. Situated between the ‘sociology of emotions’ and ‘nostalgia studies’, it considers the reasons for which nostalgia appears to be becoming an increasingly significant and debated emotion in late-modern culture. With chapters offering studies of nostalgia at micro-, meso- and macro-levels of society, it offers insights into the rise to prominence of nostalgia and the attendant consequences. Thematically organised and examining the role of nostalgia on an individual level – in the lives of concrete individuals – as well as analysing its function on a more historical social level as a collective and culturally shared emotion, Nostalgia Now brings together the latest empirical and theoretical work on an important contemporary emotion and proposes new agendas for research. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, social theory, psychology and cultural studies with interests in the emotions.

Book Dwelling in the Text

Download or read book Dwelling in the Text written by Marilyn R. Chandler and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-09-23 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a house? And what can architecture tell us about individual psychology, national character and aspiration? The house holds a central place in American mythology, as Marilyn Chandler demonstrates in a series of "house tours" through American novels, beginning with Thoreau's Walden and ending with Toni Morrison's Beloved and Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping. Chandler illuminates the complex analogies between house and psyche, house and family, house and social environment, and house and text. She traces a historical path from settlement to unsettledness in American culture and explores all the rituals in between: of building, decorating, inhabiting, and abandoning houses. She notes the ambivalence between our desire for rootedness and our romanticization of wide open spaces, relating these poles to the tension between materialism and spirituality in our national character. At a time when housing has become a problem of unprecedented dimensions in America, this look at the place of houses and homes in the American imagination reveals some sources of the attitudes, assumptions, and expectations that underlie the designing and building of the homes we buy, sell, and dream about.
