Download or read book Metatheater and Modernity written by Mary Ann Frese Witt and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metatheater and Modernity: Baroque and Neobaroque is the first work to link the study of metatheater with the concepts of baroque and neobaroque. Arguing that the onset of European modernity in the early seventeenth century and both the modernist and the postmodernist periods of the twentieth century witnessed a flourishing of the phenomenon of theater that reflects on itself as theater, the author reexamines the concepts of metatheater, baroque, and neobaroque through a pairing and close analysis of seventeenth and twentieth century plays. The comparisons include Jean Rotrou's The True Saint Genesius with Jean-Paul Sartre's Kean and Jean Genet's The Blacks; Pierre Corneille's L'Illusion comique with Tony Kushner's The Illusion; Gian Lorenzo Bernini's The Impresario with Luigi Pirandello's theater-in-theater trilogy; Shakespeare's Hamlet with Pirandello's Henry IV and Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead; Moli re's Impromptu de Versailles with "impromptus" by Jean Cocteau, Jean Giraudoux, and Eug ne Ionesco. Metatheater and Modernity also examines the role of technology in the creating and breaking of illusions in both centuries. In contrast to previous work on metatheater, it emphasizes the metatheatrical role of comedy. Metatheater, the author concludes, is both performance and performative: it accomplishes a perceptual transformation in its audience both by defending theater and exposing the illusory quality of the world outside.

Book In Pursuit of Prosperity

Download or read book In Pursuit of Prosperity written by David Reed and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pursuit of Prosperity provides a much needed exploration of the evolution of environmental sustainability in U.S. foreign policy. Through expert analysis of nine countries and regions of strategic importance, David Reed and his stellar team of experts in foreign policy and environmental affairs identify emerging threats to the prosperity and national security of the United States. They assert that U.S. foreign policy must shift away from its 100-year-old focus on obtaining energy and mineral inputs for the industrial economy. In the new millennium, U.S. foreign policy must be geared toward ensuring the prosperity of the country’s trading and political partners around the globe. To the degree that our partners’ economies and social stability are threatened by the natural resource scarcities and environmental change unfolding within their borders and in neighboring countries, threats to U.S. prosperity and national security increase proportionately. Directed to U.S. foreign policy makers, the intelligence and security communities, and influential think tanks and research organizations, the book proposes specific recommendations the U.S. government should embrace to respond to the disruption of global supply chains, social instability in partner countries, disruptive impacts on regional relations, and expansion of illegal trade and criminal networks. This unique focus establishes In Pursuit of Prosperity as a seminal work in understanding the challenges facing the United States in this period of global environmental change.

Book excerpt: Cyberspace opens up infinitely new possibilities to the deviant imagination. With access to the Internet and sufficient know-how you can, if you are so inclined, buy a bride, cruise gay bars, go on a global shopping spree with someone else's credit card, break into a bank's security system, plan a demonstration in another country and hack into the Pentagon − all on the same day. In more than any other medium, time and place are transcended, undermining the traditional relationship between physical context and social situation. This book crosses the boundaries of sociological, criminological and cultural discourse in order to explore the implications of these massive transformations in information and communication technologies for the growth of criminal and deviant identities and behaviour on the Internet. This is a book not about computers, nor about legal controversies over the regulation of cyberspace, but about people and the new patterns of human identity, behaviour and association that are emerging as a result of the communications revolution.

But now, for the first time ever, you can learn to putt like the legendary Ben Hogan, the winner of 9 major championships. Recognized by many as the greatest ball-striker and on-target tee-to-green player of all time, Hogan's prowess with the flat stick has often gone unnoticed. But Hogan's proficiency on the greens was like none other when it came to sinking difficult putts under high-stakes tournament conditions. Hogan on the Green by John Andrisani presents readers with a comprehensive, illustrated analysis of Hogan's revolutionary system for sinking short-, medium-, and long-range putts on a variety of surfaces. Complete with easy-to-follow instructions for setup and stroke techniques, as well as tips on putting strategy, practice, and mastering the mental game, this book is a unique and invaluable resource for those looking to perfect their putting. With anecdotal recollections and instructional commentary from those who knew Hogan best, including 1964 US Open champion Ken Venturi and Herbert Warren Wind, Hogan's collaborator on his classic 1957 bestseller, Five Lessons, Hogan on the Green also includes a host of practice drills and a special section of putting lessons from renowned golf coach Claude "Butch" Harmon Jr.

Book excerpt: In 1939, Brazil seemed a world away from the chaos overtaking Europe. Yet despite its bucolic reputation as a distant land of palm trees and pristine beaches, Brazil’s natural resources and proximity to the United States made it strategically invaluable to both the Allies and the Axis alike. As acclaimed historian Neill Lochery reveals in The Fortunes of War, Brazil’s wily dictator Getúlio Dornelles Vargas keenly understood his country’s importance, and played both sides of the escalating global conflict off against each other, gaining trade concessions, weapons shipments, and immense political power in the process. Vargas ultimately sided with the Allies and sent troops to the European theater, but not before his dexterous geopolitical machinations had transformed Rio de Janeiro into one of South America’s most powerful cities and solidified Brazil’s place as a major regional superpower. A fast-paced tale of diplomatic intrigue, The Fortunes of War reveals how World War II transformed Brazil from a tropical backwater into a modern, global power.

Book Advancing Earth Surface Representation via Enhanced Use of Earth Observations in Monitoring and Forecasting Applications

Download or read book Advancing Earth Surface Representation via Enhanced Use of Earth Observations in Monitoring and Forecasting Applications written by Gianpaolo Balsamo and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The representation of the Earth's surface in global monitoring and forecasting applications is moving towards capturing more of the relevant processes, while maintaining elevated computational efficiency and therefore a moderate complexity. These schemes are developed and continuously improved thanks to well instrumented field-sites that can observe coupled processes occurring at the surface–atmosphere interface (e.g., forest, grassland, cropland areas and diverse climate zones). Approaching global kilometer-scale resolutions, in situ observations alone cannot fulfil the modelling needs, and the use of satellite observation becomes essential to guide modelling innovation and to calibrate and validate new parameterization schemes that can support data assimilation applications. In this book, we review some of the recent contributions, highlighting how satellite data are used to inform Earth surface model development (vegetation state and seasonality, soil moisture conditions, surface temperature and turbulent fluxes, land-use change detection, agricultural indicators and irrigation) when moving towards global km-scale resolutions.
