Download or read book Fort Cochin in Kerala 1750 1830 written by Anjana Singh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the early modern fortress town of Cochin in India, based on the rarely used VOC archival deposits in the Tamilnadu State Archives in Chennai (Madras), provides an intimate portrait of a Dutch urban community of East India Company servants and their dependents living within the larger social environment of the Malabar coast. It shows how between 1750 and 1830 the population of this Dutch settlement had adapted itself to the fundamental political and economic changes that occurred as a result of local state formation processes, the demise of the Dutch East India Company, and the change of regime that occurred when English administration was imposed on Fort Cochin in 1795.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Netherlands

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Netherlands written by Joop W. Koopmans and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2007-05-22 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Netherlands, frequently but erroneously called Holland, is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. In the past few decades, it has been undergoing many transformations made possible by its dynamic and fast-moving political landscape. It has shifted from fierce nationalism toward a self-image of tolerance and permissiveness: the national identity and self-consciousness has slowly eroded through decolonization and immigration. Unfortunately, several murders of prominent, controversial politicians have started yet another shift away from tolerance, and economic stagnation has bred pessimism. Nonetheless, despite many trials and tribulations, there has been real progress, and the Dutch have perhaps done a better job of coming to terms with their limitations than many others in the world. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Netherlands contains more than 700 cross-referenced dictionary entries on individual topics spanning the Netherlands' political, economic, and social system along with short biographies on important figures who have shaped the Netherlands' history. Supplementing the entries are a list of acronyms and abbreviations, a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and a bibliography, making this a superb quick reference on the Netherlands.

Book Archives and Archiving in the 21st Century

Download or read book Archives and Archiving in the 21st Century written by Radhika Seshan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-09 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archives intersect with our lives in many ways. We have archives of our own, documenting family memories and histories. Then, there are larger archives that document different aspects of the past — memories, identities, location, time, and space. This volume explores changing notions of the archive in different areas, to trace the ways in which the archives continue to be used in history. It examines how history, the historian, and the archive interact in many ways to look at the past and record it. The chapters in this volume discuss an array of diverse and important themes regarding the making and usage of archives which include reconstructing pre-modern economic history from the Dutch archives; the role of India Office Records in the British Library; reading the Rungia Gosavi Affair in 1857 from colonial archives; and Uday Shankar’s Kalpana as archive besides the usage of archives to study nationalism, historiography and literature, water and Chola history, Mysorean invasions in Kerala, and cyberspace. The chapters also explore how archives impact and shape our investigations. First of its kind, this important work will be of interest to scholars and researchers of archival studies, research methodology, archaeology, Indian history, ancient history, medieval history, modern India, anthropology, and history in general.

Book By Sweat and Sword

Download or read book By Sweat and Sword written by K. K. Nair and published by Manohar Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Going well beyond the usual narratives on Kerala history, this study discusses the unique history of a statedescribed incolonial documents as being perpetually at war but, remarkably, whose people have been historically happy. Ever since its discovery, Kerala s political climate was characterized by a variety of Chinese, Arab, European, and local powers fighting each other for economic and military ascendancy. And yet, despite centuries of foreign contact and conflict, it continued to thrive and retain its independence. The influences Kerala absorbed were of its own choosing. This book hypothesizes that this remarkable achievement was a direct consequence of Kerala s unique military, diplomatic, social, and economic culture. A society by no means perfect, but fairly close, causing British administrators to record that society in Kerala had arrived close to fulfilling the utilitarian dictum of "the largest possible happiness of the largest numbers."

Book The Rajas of Cochin 1663 1720

Download or read book The Rajas of Cochin 1663 1720 written by H. K. s'. Jacob and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: In Indian history the long eighteenth century between 1650 and 1850 may be seen as a period of transition. In Kerela, the old order of the Nayar-power gradually changed to a more centralized state formation. Upto 1795 the Dutch East India Company participated in this process. In the lands around Cochin the Rajas tried to enhance their power over Nambuthiri and Nayar chiefs and they expanded their influence to the north in their struggle with the Zamorins of Calicut. Advised by Konkanis and Pattars they used the power of the Dutch as much as possible to their own advantage. Based on the archives of the Dutch East India Company this study shows how a special reading of these sources throws a new light on the history of the realm of Cochin in the period 1663-1720.
