This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fall of the Dutch Republic As to most students, their stream of knowledge about Dutch history starts fresh and bright among the heroic deeds of the sixteenth century, follows a less impetuous course during the seventeenth, and runs itself to death among the dry sands of the eighteenth. They are aware of the undeniable fact that at the present moment there exists a Kingdom of the Netherlands. But what lies between the days of William III (of Macaulay fame) and the foundation of the modern kingdom, is a subject of quite as much speculation as the mediaeval history of Greece or China. It has been my intention to supply the missing link for the benefit of American readers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Did ever a maiden look so tragic! He added, when I struck him in the face, because he dared to put his arm about my waist. No sooner had I given him that blow than I re pented, for who can tell the consequences of striking a Spaniard? It is true they have not the power in Leyden that they once had; yet every one seems to fear them even now. It is as though the fear had become part of our nature after so many years of oppression. But he only said again, Did ever a maiden look so tragic! And turned away, laughing insolently, halting, however, when he had gone a few yards, to bid me read the paper and tell my friends. I went up to the door and read it. Oh! 'tis terrible, Bertrand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Rise of the Dutch Republic

Download or read book The Rise of the Dutch Republic written by John Lothrop Motley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of the Dutch Republic: A History To the Dutch Republic, even more than to Florence at an earlier day, is the world indebted for practical instruction in that great science of political equilibrium which must always become more and more im portant as the various states of the civilised world are pressed more closely together, and as the struggle for preeminence becomes morefeverish. Courage and skill in political and military combinations enabled William the Silent to overcome the most powerful and uh scrupulous monarch of his age. The same hereditary audacity and fertility of genius placed the destiny of Europe in the hands of William's great-grandson, and enabled him to mould into an impregnable barrier the various elements of opposition to the overshadowing monarchy of Louis XIV. As the schemes of the Inquisition and the unparalleled tyranny of Philip, in one century, led to the establishment of the Re public of the United Provinces, so, in the next, the revocation of the Nantes Edict and the invasion of Holland were avenged by the elevation of the Dutch stadholder upon the throne of the stipendiary Stuarts. Even peace did not bring back the old days of order and meticulous progress in nearly all directions. The revolution, which began with slogans of liberty and prosperity, ended with the liberty to destroy and to kill foreigners of all races. Our Indonesian friend continues with these simple words: Out of this ferment emerged the tragedy and problems of the Indonesian State and its peoples after their libera tion.
