Book excerpt: Nineteenth Century Painting in the Netherlands' fills a gap in art history. There has been no survey on Dutch art since 1948, and the only English publication available is a translation from an earlier 1920s book. This new publication offers a synthesis of research done by many during the last half century and provides new insights into the art market, into stylistic development, and into the relations between Dutch and foreign artists. It also offers over 500 full colour illustrations of paintings: some famous, some hardly known and even some new discoveries. Vincent van Gogh, Joseph Israëls and Anton Mauve are internationally renowned Dutch painters from the 19th century. Their work was collected in Europe and the USA, and of course Van Gogh is perhaps the most famous artist ever. They came from a country famous for its painting since the 16th century. Yet apart from Van Gogh and the Hague School, 19th century Dutch art is for many still unfamiliar territory. This is no surprise, as the last overview dates from 1948, and an earlier book from 1920 was the only one translated in English (in 1973). So it is really high time that another survey is published, as much new research has been done since. Jenny Reynaerts, senior curator of the Rijksmuseum and a well-known specialist on 19th century Dutch art, has written her book for a large reading public. She looks at the period with fresh eyes and often from a contemporary point of view. Her results show that Dutch painters were far more internationally oriented than has been thought until now: Ary Scheffer became a superstar in France, as did Lawrence Alma-Tadema in England, and painters like Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, Johan Barthold Jongkind, Jacob and Matthijs Maris made a name for themselves all over Europe. Exhibition: Singer Museum, Laren, The Netherlands (15.01.-15.05.2020).

In this book, she traces the origins and development of nineteenth-century painters back to the late eighteenth-century painters. She argues that their painting skills had been adapted to suit the needs of their time but not altogether lost and that from them new styles and talents were born.

Book Dutch Painters of the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Dutch Painters of the Nineteenth Century written by Max Rooses and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dutch Painters of the Nineteenth Century: With Biographical Notices When the publisher asked me to write an introduction to this work I gladly accepted his invitation; nor was I long in seeking my material. The book comprises a series of articles, by various well-known writers, on the life and works of the most celebrated Dutch painters of this century. The contributors are personal friends of the artists themselves, in whose studios they have seen many of the works which they describe, and from whose lips they have heard the facts they here relate. There was no doubt therefore what my introduction should contain. Each of the biographical sketches, which are brought together in this volume, stands by itself. The various pictures are treated separately, each filling its own particular frame, as though it had neither predecessors nor successors nor yet contemporaries and belonged to no school but its own. Yet we know that not even the greatest and most original artist can escape from the influence of his time and surroundings; can be com pletely and fairly judged, if separated from what precedes and environs him. His greatness is discovered by contrast; his achievement is recognized when compared with that of others; his importance is gauged by what others have done, whether they be greater or less than himself. My Object will be therefore to point out' the threads which bind the modern painters together, and their connexion with the older school as well as their lines of divergence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The artistic work produced in the Netherlands a hundred years ago is characterized by enormous variety. Impressionism was still a strong influence, but young artists were exploring numerous other avenues as well. Some turned to new sources of inspiration such as Japanese art and symbolism, while others were pushing stylization to its limits. International schools were followed closely by the Dutch artists, many of whom stayed for months at a time in Paris, the South of France or London to study the new trends at close range. These developments, which roughly spanned the period 1885-1915, began with Van Gogh, and ended with Mondrian...This book explores the significance of this period of art on paper...The selection gives an excellent impression of the range of work produced on paper in the period around 1900."--back cover
