Book A Hundred Years of Dutch Architecture 1901 2000

Download or read book A Hundred Years of Dutch Architecture 1901 2000 written by Jaap de Jong and published by Nai010 Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Reconstructs the frames of reference that informed the practice of architecture in the Netherlands during the last century. The book provides a detailed documentation of twenty key architectural works, based on the original plans. Each of these works embodies a specific response to an architectural problem and represents a crystallization point of one of the various approaches that can be distinguished within the gamut of design strategies, namely a traditionalist, an expressionist, a functionalist, a rationalist and a post-modernist approach. These five approaches to architecture are reconstructed by analysing the interconnection between a building's form, construction and function. Their architectural and social significance is examined in five separate essays that precede the documentation. Difficult though it may be to classify individual buildings according to shared functional, constructional and formal characteristics, this does not mean that it is impossible to discern certain lines of development running through Dutch architectural production. Those lines are clearly set out in a removable 'Calendar'. One hundred representative buildings, one for each year, are placed chronologically against the backdrop of technological and social developments. The 'Calendar' traces a path for today's designers, through the maze of stories about architecture, to the buildings themselves"--Back cover.

Download or read book 20th Century Architecture in the Netherlands written by Hans Ibelings and published by Nai010 Publishers. This book was released on 1995 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book provides an introduction to twentieth century Dutch architecture. Ten concise chapters, each covering a single decade, discuss a selection of characteristic buildings, referring to the major events and developments of each period. Architectural history is not defined here as a cyclical succession of styles or generations, but as a heterogenous collection of buildings and designs which are often based on equally differing approaches. Apart from the internationally renowned masterpieces by architects like Berlage, Oud, Duiker, Van Eyck and Koolhaas this book includes numerous lesser known buildings which underline the versatility and quality of Dutch architecture.

Book The Routledge Companion to Architectural Drawings and Models

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Architectural Drawings and Models written by Federica Goffi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-05-30 with total page 869 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architectural drawings and models are instruments of imagination, communication, and historical continuity. The role of drawings and models, and their ownership, placement, and authorship in a ubiquitous digital age deserve careful consideration. Expanding on the well-established discussion of the translation from drawings to buildings, this book fills a lacuna in current scholarship, questioning the significance of the lives of drawings and models after construction. Including emerging, well-known, and world-renowned scholars in the fields of architectural history and theory and curatorial practices, the thirty-five contributions define recent research in four key areas: drawing sites/sites of knowledge construction: drawing, office, construction site; the afterlife of drawings and models: archiving, collecting, displaying, and exhibiting; tools of making: architectural representations and their apparatus over time; and the ethical responsibilities of collecting and archiving: authorship, ownership, copyrights, and rights to copy. The research covers a wide range of geographies and delves into the practices of such architects as Sir John Soane, Superstudio, Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc, Frank Lloyd Wright, Wajiro Kon, Germán Samper Gnecco, A+PS, Mies van der Rohe, and Renzo Piano.

Book Passion and Control Dutch Architectural Culture of the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book Passion and Control Dutch Architectural Culture of the Eighteenth Century written by Freek Schmidt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passion and Control explores Dutch architectural culture of the eighteenth century, revealing the central importance of architecture to society in this period and redefining long-established paradigms of early modern architectural history. Architecture was a passion for many of the men and women in this book; wealthy patrons, burgomasters, princes and scientists were all in turn infected with architectural mania. It was a passion shared with artists, architects and builders, and a vast cast of Dutch society who contributed to a complex web of architectural discourse and who influenced building practice. The author presents a rich tapestry of sources to reconstruct the cultural context and meaning of these buildings as they were perceived by contemporaries, including representations in texts, drawings and prints, and builds on recent research by cultural historians on consumerism, material culture and luxury, print culture and the public sphere, and the history of ideas and mentalities.
