Download or read book Ad vivum written by Thomas Balfe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term ad vivum and its cognates al vivo, au vif, nach dem Leben and naer het leven have been applied since the thirteenth century to depictions designated as from, to or after (the) life. This book explores the issues raised by this vocabulary and related terminology with reference to visual materials produced and used in Europe before 1800, including portraiture, botanical, zoological, medical and topographical images, images of novel and newly discovered phenomena, and likenesses created through direct contact with the object being depicted. The designation ad vivum was not restricted to depictions made directly after the living model, and was often used to advertise the claim of an image to be a faithful likeness or a bearer of reliable information. Viewed as an assertion of accuracy or truth, ad vivum raises a number of fundamental questions in the area of early modern epistemology – questions about the value and prestige of visual and/or physical contiguity between image and original, about the kinds of information which were thought important and dependably transmissible in material form, and about the roles of the artist in that transmission. The recent interest of historians of early modern art in how value and meaning are produced and reproduced by visual materials which do not conform to the definition of art as unique invention, and of historians of science and of art in the visualisation of knowledge, has placed the questions surrounding ad vivum at the centre of their common concerns. Download or read book Landscape and Religion from Van Eyck to Rembrandt written by Boudewijn Bakker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a corrective to the common scholarly characterization of seventeenth-century Dutch landscape painting as modern, realistic and secularized, Boudewijn Bakker here explores the long history and purpose of landscape in Netherlandish painting. In Bakker's view, early Netherlandish as well as seventeenth-century Dutch painting can be understood only in the context of the intellectual climate of the day. Concentrating on landscape painting as the careful depiction of the visible world, Bakker's analysis takes in the thought of figures seldom consulted by traditional art historians, such as the fifteenth-century philosopher Dionysius the Carthusian, the sixteenth-century religious reformer John Calvin, the geographer Abraham Ortelius and the seventeenth-century poet Constantijn Huygens. Probing their conception of nature as 'the first Book of God' and art as its representation, Bakker identifies a world view that has its roots in the traditional Christian perceptions of God and creation. Landscape and Religion from Van Eyck to Rembrandt imposes a new layer of interpretation on the richly varied landscapes of the great masters. In so doing it adds a new dimension to the insights offered by modern art-historical research. Further, Bakker's explorations of early modern art and literature provide essential background for any student of European intellectual history.

Download or read book The Princely Collections Liechtenstein written by Johann Kraftner and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This in depth look at one of the world's most storied private art collections celebrates five centuries of grand artistic patronage. The Princely Collections, Liechtenstein gained momentum during the early 17th century when Prince Karl I commissioned several works, including Adriaen de Fries's life-sized bronze of Christ in Distress. From that point on, the artistic holdings of the principality grew and were shaped by each successive monarch. Over the centuries, the collections expanded to include works by masters such as da Vinci, Botticelli, Rembrandt, Rubens, and van Dyck. They now comprise some 1,500 paintings and sculptures, dating from the early Renaissance to the 19th century. The collections also contain important works of graphic art, porcelain, tapestries, and furniture that once adorned the Liechtenstein castles and palaces. This sumptuously illustrated volume explores the historical evolution of the Princely Collections, tracing the works' acquisition as well as their occasional sale and relocation to museums around the world. Nearly one hundred of the collections' current and former highlights by approximately 60 artists are presented in this book, which allows readers to fully appreciate the breadth and depth of these storied private collections.
