Download or read book Dust Bowl written by Donald Worster and published by New York : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid 1930s, North America's Great Plains faced one of the worst man-made environmental disasters in world history. Donald Worster's classic chronicle of the devastating years between 1929 and 1939 tells the story of the Dust Bowl in ecological as well as human terms. Now, twenty-five years after his book helped to define the new field of environmental history, Worster shares his more recent thoughts on the subject of the land and how humans interact with it. In a new afterword, he links the Dust Bowl to current political, economic and ecological issues--including the American livestock industry's exploitation of the Great Plains, and the on-going problem of desertification, which has now become a global phenomenon. He reflects on the state of the plains today and the threat of a new dustbowl. He outlines some solutions that have been proposed, such as "the Buffalo Commons," where deer, antelope, bison and elk would once more roam freely, and suggests that we may yet witness a Great Plains where native flora and fauna flourish while applied ecologists show farmers how to raise food on land modeled after the natural prairies that once existed.

Book excerpt: This “riveting” companion to the PBS documentary “clarifies our understanding of the ‘worst manmade ecological disaster in American history’” (Booklist). In this riveting chronicle, Dayton Duncan and Ken Burns capture the profound drama of the American Dust Bowl of the 1930s. Terrifying photographs of mile-high dust storms, along with firsthand accounts by more than two dozen eyewitnesses, bring to life this heart-wrenching catastrophe, when a combination of drought, wind, and poor farming practices turned millions of acres of the Great Plains into a wasteland, killing crops and livestock, threatening the lives of small children, burying homesteaders’ hopes under huge dunes of dirt—and setting in motion a mass migration the likes of which the nation had never seen. Burns and Duncan collected more than three hundred mesmerizing photographs, some never before published, scoured private letters, government reports, and newspaper articles, and conducted in-depth interviews to produce a document that may likely be the last recorded testimony of the generation who lived through this defining decade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sanora Babb’s long-hidden novel Whose Names Are Unknown tells an intimate story of the High Plains farmers who fled drought dust storms during the Great Depression. Written with empathy for the farmers’ plight, this powerful narrative is based upon the author’s firsthand experience. This clear-eyed and unsentimental story centers on the fictional Dunne family as they struggle to survive and endure while never losing faith in themselves. In the Oklahoma Panhandle, Milt, Julia, their two little girls, and Milt’s father, Konkie, share a life of cramped circumstances in a one-room dugout with never enough to eat. Yet buried in the drudgery of their everyday life are aspirations, failed dreams, and fleeting moments of hope. The land is their dream. The Dunne family and the farmers around them fight desperately for the land they love, but the droughts of the thirties force them to abandon their fields. When they join the exodus to the irrigated valleys of California, they discover not the promised land, but an abusive labor system arrayed against destitute immigrants. The system labels all farmers like them as worthless “Okies” and earmarks them for beatings and worse when hardworking men and women, such as Milt and Julia, object to wages so low they can’t possibly feed their children. The informal communal relations these dryland farmers knew on the High Plains gradually coalesce into a shared determination to resist. Realizing that a unified community is their best hope for survival, the Dunnes join with their fellow workers and begin the struggle to improve migrant working conditions through democratic organization and collective protest. Babb wrote Whose Names are Unknown in the 1930s while working with refugee farmers in the Farm Security Administration (FSA) camps of California. Originally from the Oklahoma Panhandle are herself, Babb, who had first come to Los Angeles in 1929 as a journalist, joined FSA camp administrator Tom Collins in 1938 to help the uprooted farmers. As Lawrence R. Rodgers notes in his foreword, Babb submitted the manuscript for this book to Random House for consideration in 1939. Editor Bennett Cerf planned to publish this “exceptionally fine” novel but when John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath swept the nation, Cerf explained that the market could not support two books on the subject. Babb has since shared her manuscript with interested scholars who have deemed it a classic in its own right. In an era when the country was deeply divided on social legislation issues and millions drifted unemployed and homeless, Babb recorded the stories of the people she greatly respected, those “whose names are unknown.” In doing so, she returned to them their identities and dignity, and put a human face on economic disaster and social distress.

Book The Last Dust Storm

Download or read book The Last Dust Storm written by Wilma Elizabeth McDaniel and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilma Elizabeth McDaniel's poems bear powerful witness to one of the nation's most dramatic sagas, the Dustbowl exodus of the 1930's Depression era, and chronicle the lives of workers in California's hot Central Valley towns over the decades. Born to an Oklahoma sharecropping family, and part Cherokee, McDaniel began writing when she was eight, and has kept on through a lifetime of working on farms, even when poverty forced her to write on old envelopes and brown paper bags. In THE LAST DUST STORM, her third book from Hanging Loose Press, McDaniel's poems continue to surprise: Their work is done through what AMERICAN BOOK REVIEW has described as "scraped-clean language." Beneath their calm surface lie profound feeling, insight, sophistication, and often a sly humor at the expense of those who would patronize working people. The title of Tulare County poet laureate, recently bestowed on this extraordinary writer, has real meaning.

But this is basically an oral history of interviews with well over 100 people and their personal experiences on that Black Sunday in the mid-thirties.

Book The Dust Bowl Updated Edition

Download or read book The Dust Bowl Updated Edition written by Ronald Reis and published by Infobase Holdings, Inc. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Housewives hung wet sheets and blankets over windows, struggling to seal every crack with gummed paper strips. A man avoided shaking hands, lest the static electricity gathered from a dust storm knock his greeter flat. Children's tears turned to mud. Horses chewed feed filled with dust particles that sandpapered their gums raw. Dead cattle, when pried open, were filled with pounds of gut-clogging dirt. The simplest thing in life, taking a breath, became life-threatening. The Dust Bowl conditions during the "Dirty Thirties" were no blind stroke of nature, but had their origins in human error and in the misuse of the land. The Dust Bowl, Updated Edition recounts the factors that led to the Dust Bowl conditions, how those affected coped, and what can be learned from the tragedy, considered by many to be America's worst prolonged environmental disaster.

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Dust Storms written by Siniša Brstilo and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dust storms are considered natural hazards, which affect ecosystems for a short interval of time ranging from a few hours to a few days. Due to the significant impact of dust outbreaks on climate, human health and ecosystems, numerous studies have been conducted throughout the world with differing instrumentation and techniques focusing on the investigation about such events. This book provides a short review on the recent knowledge about the dust aerosol optical and physico-chemical properties, the seasonal variability of dust outbreaks, the dust source regions, and the main results of similar studies. This book also presents two dust storm spring seasonal prediction models. The algorithm of the first one is similar to a weather forecast scheme, and the second one is a multivariable regression model. Furthermore, nearly every year, usually during March to May, the Korean Peninsula has experienced several Asian Dust storm events. Analytical results for three different sample sets related to Asian dust storm phenomena are discussed here. In addition, the meteorological condition is one of the determinative factors for the dust storm occurrence. The authors of this book examine the effectiveness and application of a meteorological descriptor quantifying the daily dust storm happening probability, which is referred to as the dust storm occurrence probability index (DSOPI). The dust-related climate in North China and its prediction by statistical modelling and an Atmospheric General Circulation Model (AGCM) for climate are addressed as well since they may contribute to forecasting dust storms.
