Book excerpt: This book focuses on the study of chemical dust suppression in mine dust pollution control by means of theories, experiments, computer simulation, and case application, aiming at providing chemical dust suppression solutions for mining worksites. It has seven chapters, including the following contents: (1) introduces fundamental theories and applications of chemical dust suppression, analyzes the dust source intensity of worksites and the mechanisms of dust generation, and summarizes the dust control measures for different mining worksites. (2) According to the mechanisms of dust generation in different mining worksites, targeted dust suppressants were developed. Through optimization by monomer experiment and orthogonal experiment, the optimum formula of different types of dust suppressants was obtained, and its properties were characterized. (3) The dust suppressant field application process was introduced, and the economic benefits were analyzed. This book is expected to provide valuable references both for researchers and engineering technicians engaged in environmental engineering, safety engineering, occupational health, and mining metallurgical engineering, and it also serves as a textbook for graduate students in above disciplines.

Book Effectiveness and Impacts of Dust Control Measures for Owens Lake

Download or read book Effectiveness and Impacts of Dust Control Measures for Owens Lake written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 20th century, the city of Los Angeles diverted surface water flowing into Owens Lake for water supply, transforming the large, closed-basin, saline lake into a small brine pool surrounded by dry playa. Under high winds, the exposed lakebed produced large amounts of airborne dust, resulting in the highest concentrations of airborne particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 10 micrometers or less (PM10) in the United States. Since 2000, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, at the direction of the Great Basin Unified Air Pollution Control District, has been constructing and implementing dust control measures on the dry lakebed, with the objective of meeting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency National Ambient Air Quality Standards for PM10 and the PM10 standards set by the state of California. Many of the dust control measures used at Owens Lake require large amounts of water, energy, and maintenance to sustain their performance. Effectiveness and Impacts of Dust Control Measures for Owens Lake evaluates the effectiveness of alternative solutions for their degree of PM10 reduction and the extent that they reduce use of water in controlling dust emissions. This report considers the associated energy and environmental and economic impacts of these proposed measures and assesses their durability and reliability.

Book Monitoring and Sampling Approaches to Assess Underground Coal Mine Dust Exposures

Download or read book Monitoring and Sampling Approaches to Assess Underground Coal Mine Dust Exposures written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal remains one of the principal sources of energy for the United States, and the nation has been a world leader in coal production for more than 100 years. According to U.S. Energy Information Administration projections to 2050, coal is expected to be an important energy resource for the United States. Additionally, metallurgical coal used in steel production remains an important national commodity. However, coal production, like all other conventional mining activities, creates dust in the workplace. Respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) comprises the size fraction of airborne particles in underground mines that can be inhaled by miners and deposited in the distal airways and gas-exchange region of the lung. Occupational exposure to RCMD has long been associated with lung diseases common to the coal mining industry, including coal workers' pneumoconiosis, also known as "black lung disease." Monitoring and Sampling Approaches to Assess Underground Coal Mine Dust Exposures compares the monitoring technologies and sampling protocols currently used or required by the United States, and in similarly industrialized countries for the control of RCMD exposure in underground coal mines. This report assesses the effects of rock dust mixtures and their application on RCMD measurements, and the efficacy of current monitoring technologies and sampling approaches. It also offers science-based conclusions regarding optimal monitoring and sampling strategies to aid mine operators' decision making related to reducing RCMD exposure to miners in underground coal mines.

Book Dust Control Handbook for Industrial Minerals Mining and Processing

Download or read book Dust Control Handbook for Industrial Minerals Mining and Processing written by Andrew B. Andrew B. Cecala and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-05-09 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the mining and processing of minerals, the mined ore undergoes a number of crushing, grinding, cleaning, drying, and product sizing operations as it is processed into a marketable commodity. These operations are highly mechanized, and both individually and collectively these processes can generate large amounts of dust. If control technologies are inadequate, hazardous levels of respirable dust may be liberated into the work environment, potentially exposing workers. Accordingly, federal regulations are in place to limit the respirable dust exposure of mine workers. Engineering controls are implemented in mining operations in an effort to reduce dust generation and limit worker exposure.

Book Gravel Roads

Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book Evaluation of a Two phase Spray System for Dust Suppression

Download or read book Evaluation of a Two phase Spray System for Dust Suppression written by Bharath Kumar Belle and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dust chamber was specifically designed to study the effectiveness of two times of spray systems, in the laboratory under different operating conditions. The first system, single phase spray system (SPSS), uses water as the flowing fluid. The second, a two-phase spray system (TPSS), uses both water and air as the flowing fluid. The second, a two-phase spray system (TPSS), uses both water and air as the flowing fluids. A factorial experiment was designed in which, in addition to the spray systems, coal dust type, coal dust size, water and air pressures, and air quantity were the other factors. The major objective of this study was to study the performance of SPSS and TPSS at higher air and water pressures, specifically from 345 kPa to 690 kPa (50 to 100 psi) ranges. The experimental results were analyzed using ANOVA techniques. According to this study, the dust collection efficiency is higher for TPSS than for SPSS for all coal dust sizes and dust types. In both cases, however, the collection efficiency decreases with decrease in particle size. Key Words: Particle Size, Coal Dust, Size Distribution, Collection Efficiency, Single Phase Spray, Two Phase Spray.
