Book excerpt: Excerpt from During the War and After the War The following article was published in the Phila. \veek]y Times, one of the most broad-minded journals of the country, soon after the war, and was afterwards incorporated in The Annals of the War by the principal participants North and South. We omit notes verifying statements made, because the body of this article takes more space than we can afford in jus tice to readers in quest of current topics and local news. We take pride in copying the article because a chief actor is a Fau quier man now a last year's leaf, as it were. Bronzing the foliage of Spring. When Co]. Book Life in the War Zone

Download or read book Life in the War Zone written by Gertrude Franklin Horn Atherton and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PARIS, August 8, 1916. rance to-day is sharply divided into two sections; within the greater you can come and go almost as freely as before the war. All that is necessary is a sauf conduit easily obtained from your commissaire de police, which you are never called upon to exhibit. But the other, the Zone des Armées, in common parlance the war or military zone! There is only one thing in France more difficult of contact, and that is a member of the middle or lower bourgeoisie. For nearly three months now I have felt like an inverted snob trying to ingratiate myself with, or even to meet members, of that curious caste which exists only in France; a caste reserved, proud, suspicious, intensive, detesting foreigners only less than it does the aristocracy, and averse from variety of any sort. If you bring even one letter to society, either in France or any European capital, all doors are open to you, for society is accustomed to strangers and variety, and is often bored with itself; which the bourgeoisie, of France at least, never seems to be. So, if in the course of these and other letters, I allude, however casually, to princesses and duchesses, spare me the ready democratic sneer; but if, with affected indifference, I mention now and again a name without territorial significance, then, if you like, exchange derisive glances and exclaim: "Aha! So she has 'got there' and would have us believe she takes it as a matter of course." However-to return to the war zone.

Book excerpt: There are two ways of looking at the war: one as a journalist, the other as a theologian. The journalist tells you what happens; the theologian not only why it happens, but also what matters. If we look at this war through the eyes of a journalist or a commentator, it will he only a succession of events without any remote causes in the past, or any great purpose in the future. But if we look at the war through the eyes of God, then the war is not meaningless, though we may not presently understand its details. It may very well be a purposeful purging of the world’s evil that the world may have a rebirth of freedom under His Holy Law, for: Every human path leads on to God, He holds a myriad finer threads than gold, And strong as holy wishes, drawing us With delicate tension upward to Himself. Our approach is from the divine point of view, first of all, because it is the only explanation which fits the facts; secondly because the American people who have been confused by catchwords and slogans are seeking an inspiration for a total surrender of their great potentialities for sacrifice, both for God and country. The great mass of the American people are frankly dissatisfied with the ephemeral and superficial commentaries on what is happening. Being endowed with intelligence, they want to know why it is happening. We all know what we are fighting against; we want to know what we are fighting for. We all know that we are in a war; we want to know what we must do to make a lasting peace. We know whom we hate; but we want to know what we ought to love. We know we are fighting against a barbarism that is intrinsically wicked; we want to know what we have to do to make the resurrection of that wickedness impossible.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shipping After the War Dutch 'got possession of that country in the late war, is so totally lost to the English that we have now no more commerce with that country than we should have if it were sunk in the sea, so severe and exact are the Hollanders in keeping the trades of their own plantations entirely to their own people. The trade of Menades, or New York, we should have gained instead of the former, since we got posses sion of that place in the late war, if the Dutch had not been connived at therein at first, which now I hope they are not; for if they should be, it would not only be to the entire loss of that trade to England, but greatly to the prejudice of the Dutch trade to Virginia, because the Dutch, under pretence of trading to and from New York, carry great quantities of Virginia tobacco directly for Holland. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Polly Sees the World at War IT was a warm Spring day in late April, a sun shiny, comforting hopeful sort of day that half apologized for its sister days of wind and rain and promised the real beginning of Spring. In the city the people on the sidewalks hummed little snatches of song to themselves as they went about their work and remembered all the pleasant things that they had ever wanted to do. - Old plans long put away as impossible were brought out and eagerly reconsidered, for in the Spring every thing is possible. The sparrows Spluttered and splashed in the mud-puddles, and the dogs barked and chased them, frisky and joyous in spite of their repeated failures to catch them. All the world loves Spring, for it is the time of year when the spirit of adventure is strongest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Neglected Aspects of War The cause of Universal Peace, upon which so much of the world's attention has been fixed this summer by the Hague Conference, can progress surely to success only upon the same conditions by which any other movement for good reaches its goal. It will not be advanced, but retarded, by neglecting diligently and calmly to consider facts, to look them straight in the face; to see things as they are, and not merely as one would wish to see them now, or as it is possible that our descendants may be privileged to see in a future happier age. Among many perversions of thought and resultant exaggerations of statement, by the unconditional advocates of Arbitration, there is one which underlies all others. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia Before and After the War Never be permanently suppressed by a state of siege, or a recurrence to the stale devices of despotic coercion. Whatever form the remedy may take, it is necessary in the first place to know the origin and symptoms of the disease. The better Europe comes to know Russia, the better chance there will be of Russia knowing herself. If the enlightened patriotism of Russia is forced to address the nation through the medium of the foreign press, the fact of contributing something to this self knowledge, the condition and essence of all real pro gress, contributes also to the prospect of the peaceful regeneration of a people who, in spite of all the faults and follies of their rulers, deserve a nobler future than that of barbarism, - deserve to be happy and free.
