Book Evaluation of Ceramic Filter Material Selection for Application

Download or read book Evaluation of Ceramic Filter Material Selection for Application written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field testing in several of the Westinghouse Advanced Particulate Filtration (APF) systems has indicated that the oxide-based materials are more susceptible to thermal shock which results from system transients (i.e., combustion of char or reducing gases; system startup/turbine transients). The current clay bonded silicon carbide filter materials have a higher thermal shock resistance, but appear to be more susceptible to high temperature creep, as well as to changes that occur within the binder phase(s). Strength has frequently been used to assess what effects advanced coal fired process systems have on the stability and projected life of the various porous ceramic filter materials (Tables 1 and 2). Based on the numerous phase changes that occur, and the influence of pulse cleaning on the thermal fatigue characteristics of both the alumina/mullite and clay bonded silicon carbide filter materials, alternate material properties as thermal conductivity, thermal coefficient of expansion, elastic modulus, fracture toughness, and emissivity as a function of thermal/chemical aging are now being considered as critical factors for projecting filter durability and operating life. Table 3 provides a summary of the as-manufactured material properties for the alumina/mullite and clay bonded silicon carbide filter materials which have been used in the Westinghouses̀ APF systems. Effort is currently being directed to determine how these properties change during thermal aging of the filters in various subpilot and pilot plant systems.

Book Performance of Ceramic Membrane Filters

Download or read book Performance of Ceramic Membrane Filters written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CeraMem Corp.'s ceramic-membrane coated, dead-end ceramic filters offer a promising alternative to ceramic candle filters providing long-term operational and reliability issues are resolved: regenerability of filter passages by back pulse cleaning, tolerance to alkali-containing combustion gas and thermal/chemical aging. ANL is responsible for analytical modeling of filtration and pulse cleaning operations, flow-through testing, and prediction of filter response to thermal cycling under realistic service conditions. A test apparatus was built to expose ceramic filter specimens to chemical environments simulating operation of pressurized fluidized bed and integrated gasification combined cycle plants. Four long-duration tests have been conducted in which 100-cpsi channel filters were exposed to ash collected downstream of the cyclone separator at the PFBC plant at Tidd. Results are discussed. Focus has now shifted to exposing the advanced candle filter specimens to reducing gas environments containing NaCl, H2S, H2O, and gasification ash.

Book Lightweight Ceramic Filter Components

Download or read book Lightweight Ceramic Filter Components written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramic candle filtration is an attractive technology for particulate removal at high temperatures. The primary objective of this SBIR research program is to increase the performance, durability, and corrosion resistance of lightweight filter candles and filter tubesheet components (Fibrosic{trademark}), fabricated from vacuum formed chopped ceramic fiber (VFCCF), for use in advanced coal utilization applications. Phase 1 results proved that significant gains in material strength and particle retentivity are possible by treatment of VFCCF materials with colloidal ceramic oxides. Phase 2 effort will show how these treated materials tolerate high temperature and vapor-phase alkali species, on a long-term basis. With good durability and corrosion resistance, high temperature capability, and a low installed and replacement cost, these novel materials will help promote commercial acceptance of ceramic candle filter technology, as well as increase the efficiency and reliability of coal utilization processes in general.

Book Health and Water Quality Monitoring of Pure Home Water s Ceramic Filter Dissemination in the Northern Region of Ghana

Download or read book Health and Water Quality Monitoring of Pure Home Water s Ceramic Filter Dissemination in the Northern Region of Ghana written by Sophie Marie Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) A risk assessment analysis found that people living in traditional households with filters had a 69% lower risk of diarrhea than people in households without the filters (p-value = 0.008). Also, the water quality tests found fairly effective removal rates. In the membrane filtration tests, filters in traditional households removed 99.7% of E. coli and 99.4% of total coliform. In modem households, the numbers were lower since the source water was of higher quality; the filters removed 85% of E. coli and 90% of total coliform. In addition to removing bacterial contamination, the filters also removed 92% and 68% of turbidity in traditional and modern households, respectively. Because of these health and water quality improvements and also positive responses from filter users, PHW is successfully disseminating an appropriate technology with significant health benefits to traditional low-income households. Key Words: ceramic filtration, diarrheal prevalence, household surveys, bacterial water quality testing, Ghana, 4 Ps.

Book Ceramic Materials and Components for Engines

Download or read book Ceramic Materials and Components for Engines written by Jürgen G. Heinrich and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-11-21 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several ceramic parts have already proven their suitability for serial application in automobile engines in very impressive ways, especially in Japan, the USA and in Germany. However, there is still a lack of economical quality assurance concepts. Recently, a new generation of ceramic components, for the use in energy, transportation and environment systems, has been developed. The efforts are more and more system oriented in this field. The only possibility to manage this complex issue in the future will be interdisciplinary cooperation. Chemists, physicists, material scientists, process engineers, mechanical engineers and engine manufacturers will have to cooperate in a more intensive way than ever before. The R&D activities are still concentrating on gas turbines and reciprocating engines, but also on brakes, bearings, fuel cells, batteries, filters, membranes, sensors and actuators as well as on shaping and cutting tools for low expense machining of ceramic components. This book summarizes the scientific papers of the 7th International Symposium "Ceramic Materials and Components for Engines". Some of the most fascinating new applications of ceramic meterials in energy, transportation and environment systems are presented. The proceedings shall lead to new ideas for interdisciplinary activities in the future.
