While the program was to consider a variety of materials, the predominant focus was on Aluminized Type 2 corrugated steel pipe (CSP) and its performance versus galvanized CSP. This report is divided into two main sections-field investigation and literature review. The field investigation presents the results of a field evaluation of 32 pipes and their performance relative to that reported in FHWA-FLP-91-006, Durability of Special Coatings for Corrugated Steel Pipe. The present report also includes a review of previous research areas to evaluate conclusions and the utility of existing culvert life prediction methods. The literature review presents a discussion of the various factors affecting culvert durability and its prediction.

The study, using plain galvanized (zinc coated) CSP as the base line, addresses additional coatings including nonmetallic (bituminous coated, bituminous coated and paved, polymers, fiber bonded, epoxy bonded and concrete lined) and other metallic coatings (aluminum-zinc (galvalume) and aluminum-coated type 2) that may be used to achieve a desired design life of at least 50 years. The study is limited to storm drainage systems carrying naturally occurring surface water only.

Beth-Cu-Loy PC, Beth-Cu-Loy PC asphalt-paved, and U.S.S. Nexon and U.S.S. Nexon asphalt-paved in 10-ft lengths were coupled with either asphalt-coated-and-paved or fully-paved control pipes. Ten test sites were installed--six cross-culverts and four storm sewers. For up to 7 years, in nonaggressive sites, changes occurring in the plain polymer and asphalt-paved-polymers were minor and did not influence protective capabilities of the coatings.
