Book Durability and Performance Characteristics of Hot Mix Asphalt Containing Polymer Additives

Download or read book Durability and Performance Characteristics of Hot Mix Asphalt Containing Polymer Additives written by Robert Y. Liang and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ohio Department of Transportation has adopted the hot mix asphalt concrete containing polymer modifiers for use in the interstate highway pavement. Among the various reasons cited for the adoption of polymer modifiers are the favorable field experiences by ODOT, extensive literatures reporting enhanced performance, such as rutting resistance, low temperature thermal cracking resistance, and possibly fatigue endurance. However, despite these favorable findings, there are still cases involving premature failure of hot mixtures containing polymer modifiers. Concerns regarding optimum polymer content, compatibility between polymer additives and asphalt cement, proper mixing and compaction procedure remain to be resolved. Furthermore, performance based specifications to ensure production of desirable final asphalt concrete product require additional development. Questions regarding the suitability of Superpave binder testing procedures for the polymer-modified binders need to be clarified.

Book Evaluation of Polymer Modified Asphalt in Hot Mix Pavements

Download or read book Evaluation of Polymer Modified Asphalt in Hot Mix Pavements written by Charles Ifft and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer modified asphalts have recently been the focus of much attention in the U.S. due to claims that polymer additives will lengthen the life of an asphalt pavement. Much of the published research on this topic has been concentrated on the effects of polymer modifiers on binder and mixture properties. The goal of this testing is to predict from laboratory testing the actual field performance of an asphalt concrete. Over the years, specifications have been developed for conventional asphalts that allow pavement performance to be predicted from certain binder tests. These conventional binder tests do not fully address the special characteristics of polymer modified asphalt binders and need revision to be an effective tool in predicting pavement service life. This paper presents the findings of a two-part laboratory research program intended to relate binder and mixture properties of polymer modified asphalts. The preliminary testing involved five asphalt binder types and a variety of binder and mixture tests. Promising test procedures were further investigated in the final testing program where ten asphalt binders were examined. Simple linear regression was used to determine the strength of a relationship between pairs of binder properties and mixture properties. The preliminary testing showed penetration, toughness and tenacity, and force ductility to have the most promise in predicting mixture performance. The final testing contained enough data to be analyzed with both simple linear regression and multiple regression. Penetration, toughness and tenacity, force ductility again were the test procedures that had binder properties that correlated well with mixture properties.

Book Evaluation of Warm Mix Additives for Use in Modified Asphalt Mixtures

Download or read book Evaluation of Warm Mix Additives for Use in Modified Asphalt Mixtures written by Corina Borroel Wong and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intention of this research effort is to evaluate the use of warm mix additives with typical polymer-modified and terminal blend tire rubber asphalt mixtures from Nevada and California. The research effort is broken into three phases that are intended to evaluate the impacts of warm mix additives with typical polymer-modified and terminal blend tire rubber asphalt mixtures from Nevada and California: moisture damage, performance characteristics, and mechanistic analysis. In Phase I of this research effort, mixture resistance to moisture damage was evaluated using the indirect tensile test and the dynamic modulus at multiple freeze-thaw cycles. Laboratory testing was conducted to address the following: (1) the impact of warm mix additive and reduced production temperatures on the moisture damage resistance of asphalt mixtures, (2) the impact of residual aggregate moisture on the moisture damage resistance of WMA mixtures, (3) the impact of warm mix additives on the moisture damage resistance of anti-strip treated WMA mixtures, and (3) the impact of long-term aging on strength gain and the moisture damage resistance of WMA mixtures. A total of one aggregate source, four warm mix asphalt technologies (Advera, Sasobit, Revix and Foaming) and three asphalt binder types (neat, polymer-modified and terminal blend tire rubber modified asphalt binders) typically used in both Nevada and California are being evaluated in this study. This thesis will only summarize the test results and findings of the Phase I of the study for two warm-mix additives: Advera and Sasobit. The evaluation of the other two technologies (i.e. Revix and Foaming) as well as the Phase II testing are still in progress and have not been completed.

Book Durability Characteristics of Asphalt Mixtures Containing Bio additives

Download or read book Durability Characteristics of Asphalt Mixtures Containing Bio additives written by Amanda Leigh Hufft and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is focused on determining the durability characteristics of asphalt mixtures containing bio-based additives for the purpose of more effective use of recycled materials. Fifty mixtures were evaluated by Cantabro Mass Loss testing in their virgin state, after 1 year of field aging, and after laboratory conditioning to determine the effectiveness of bio-additives in dense graded asphalt and sand asphalt mixtures. Key findings from this work demonstrated that considerable amounts of recycled asphalt shingles (i.e. 5% of the total mixture) significantly affect the brittleness of dense graded asphalt mixtures when used in conjunction with reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Furthermore, brittleness was not improved with the use of bio-additives at high dosages (e.g. greater than 7.5% of the total binder content), but was improved in some cases at lower dosage rates (e.g. 2.5-5%). Additional testing of similar mixtures and bio-additives evaluated in this thesis are recommended.

Book Comparison of Performance of Asphalt Mixtures Containing Polymer Modifiers

Download or read book Comparison of Performance of Asphalt Mixtures Containing Polymer Modifiers written by Hamid Behbahani and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the properties of control and modified asphalt mixtures. Two polymers such as styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) were used as modifiers, and mixes with different percentages of polymers were prepared by mixing with 60/70 penetration grade unmodified bitumen. Marshall samples were prepared using the modified and unmodified binders and the effect of SBS and EVA on the mechanical properties of the hot mix asphalt has been determined in terms of stability, flow, indirect tensile strength, and rutting resistance. Test results indicated that the polymer modification improved the conventional properties such as penetration, softening point, and temperature susceptibility. It was also conducted that the stability values related to SBS modified specimens increased with an increase in SBS content compared to the control specimens. While, the stability values for EVA modified specimens are smaller than the stability values of the control specimens. Finally, it was observed that the rutting resistance of the modified mixtures for both of polymer modified binders were higher than the control mixtures.

Book An Exploratory Study on Functionally Graded Materials with Application to Multilayered Pavement Design

Download or read book An Exploratory Study on Functionally Graded Materials with Application to Multilayered Pavement Design written by Ernian Pan and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The response of flexible pavement is largely influenced by the resilient modulus of the pavement profile. Different methods/approaches have been adopted in order to estimate or measure the resilient modulus of each layer assuming an average modulus within the layer. In order to account for the variation in the modulus of elasticity with depth within a layer in elastic pavement analysis, which is due to temperature or moisture variation with depth, the layer should be divided into several sublayers and the modulus should be gradually varied between the layers. A powerful and innovative computer program has been developed for elastic pavement analysis that overcomes the limitations of the existing pavement analysis programs. The new program can predict accurately and efficiently the response of the pavement consisted of any number of layers/sublayers and any number of loads. The complexity of the tire-pavement loading configuration can be modeled easily as well. Practical pavement engineering problems have been analyzed and discussed taking into consideration the modulus variation with depth as well as the complex tire-pavement loading configuration utilizing our newly developed MultiSmart3D program. The analyzed problems illustrated that powerful analytical tools, such as MultiSmart3D, are needed to study and predict the pavement response in practical and fast manners. For example, the predicted life time of the pavement can be increased or decreased by a factor more than two if the modulus of elasticity variation with depth is taken into consideration.
