Book Duplicate Schools in the Bronx Classic Reprint

Download or read book Duplicate Schools in the Bronx Classic Reprint written by Joseph S. Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Duplicate Schools in the Bronx The report covers only those features of the instruc tion, organization, and management which are charac teristic of the duplicate schools. The standard academic subjects - English, mathematics, history, geography - are not displaced by anything in the new form of organiza tion. They are, however, taught by the departmental system, and supplemented by auditorium exercises, play, and shop work. It is too soon to attempt to measure the effect of the duplicate organization on the regular studies. In five Of the schools I have personally made no inspection Of these subjects since the reorganization was effected. I merely remark that, since the traditional subjects have about the same time allowance they had before and are taught by specialists and supplemented by other activities, it would be strange indeed if they suffered harm. On the contrary, other things being equal, the regular subjects should have a far better chance of yielding their best fruits in a school that emphasizes initiative, motivation, application, and self help, than in a school where teaching is predominantly a matter of juggling words. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minutes of the Committee on Sites and Buildings of the School Board for the Boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx, 1899 P. S. 1, for the use of a kindergarten with a very limited number of pupils, there were very nearly 700 pupils in neigh boring schools receiving but partial instruction. Mr. O'brien moved that the Committee on Studies be notified that this committee disagrees with said Committee in its Opinion, that the vacant room in new P. S. 1 should not be fitted up for the use of primary pupils, but that it should be fitted up as a kindergarten, for the reason that so many primary children are in need of school accommodation, and as the room in question can be fitted up for the accommodation of from 60 to 65 children of the lowest primary grade, the primary children should be first provided for. Book Cubs in the Tub

Download or read book Cubs in the Tub written by Candace Fleming and published by Holiday House. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fred and Helen Martini longed for a baby, and they ended up with dozens of lion and tiger cubs! Snuggle up to this purr-fect read aloud about the Bronx Zoo's first female zoo-keeper. When Bronx Zoo-keeper Fred brought home a lion cub, Helen Martini instantly embraced it. The cub's mother lost the instinct to care for him. "Just do for him what you would do with a human baby," Fred suggested...and she did. Helen named him MacArthur, and fed him milk from a bottle and cooed him to sleep in a crib. Soon enough, MacArthur was not the only cub bathed in the tub! The couple continues to raise lion and tiger cubs as their own, until they are old enough to return them to zoos. Helen becomes the first female zookeeper at the Bronx zoo, the keeper of the nursery. This is a terrific non-fiction book to read aloud while snuggling up with your cubs! Filled with adorable baby cats, this is a story about love, dedication, and a new kind of family. Gorgeously patterned illustrations by Julie Downing detail the in-home nursery and a warm pallet creates a cozy pairing with Candace Fleming's lovely language. Backmatter includes a short biography of Helen Martini and a selected bibliography.
