Book excerpt: Fairacres Publications 135 St Dunstan lived in the tenth century, between 909 and 988. He developed the ancient church foundation at Glastonbury into the first Benedictine monastery in England, and later served as Archbishop of Canterbury for twenty-eight years. He was a scholar, artist and musician, as well as a contemplative spiritual father. Why is his life and work of interest today after one thousand years? His influence touched many areas of English life in a way that helped determine the foundations of medieval and early modern society. He was a very gifted and many-sided person, whose experience bears out the meaning of the words of Christ: ‘I have come that they may have life—life in all its fullness.’ This study attempts to piece together a coherent picture of his spiritual vision from the documents and works of art that remain from his time. Dunstan emerges as one of the most interesting and significant of the English saints.

Book Eadmer of Canterbury Lives and Miracles of Saints Oda Dunstan and Oswald

Download or read book Eadmer of Canterbury Lives and Miracles of Saints Oda Dunstan and Oswald written by Bernard J. Muir and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2006-04-06 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume in Oxford Medieval Text contains Eadmer's Lives of Saints Oda, Dunstan, and Oswald, as well as the Miracles of Dunstan and Oswald. These three English saints, together with Æthelwold of Winchester, were key figures in the Benedictine revival of the tenth century, which saw a flowering of Anglo-Saxon religious, artistic, and literary culture. Eadmer of Canterbury (c.1060-c.1130), the secretary, confidant, and biographer of Saint Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury (1033-1109), was one of the most important historians and biographers in the period after the Norman Conquest. His works, written in Latin, look back constantly to the Anglo-Saxon past, while at the same time they accurately reflect the present-day realities of the wider European society into which England had been forcibly integrated. Manuscripts of his Lives of the Saints circulated widely in both in England and France, but apart from his Life of Anselm they have been little studied, and have remained largely untranslated. The works newly edited and translated in this edition provide many insights into the wider political history of the pre- and post-Conquest periods, as well as important evidence for the cults of the saints in Canterbury and Worcester.

Book The Voices of the Saints

Download or read book The Voices of the Saints written by Bert Ghezzi and published by Image. This book was released on 2002-09-24 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiring stories of 365 holy men and women-from the best known to some of the most obscure-come to life in an engaging collection of biographical profiles, quotations from the saints themselves, meditations, and prayers. Voices of the Saints opens with an instruction from Saint Philip Neri: "The best preparation for prayer is to read the lives of the saints, not from mere curiosity, but quietly and with recollection a little at a time. And to pause whenever you feel your heart touched with devotion." With these words of faith and wisdom as his guiding principle, Bert Ghezzi presents the lives of such familiar and beloved saints as Saint Peter and Saint Catherine of Siena; Saint Jerome and Saint Thérèse of Lisieux; of humble, little-known figures like Felix of Nola, Pelagia the Penitent, and Leonard of Port Maurice; and of sainted men and women associated with a particular place, including Margaret of Scotland, Rose of Lima, Elizabeth Ann Seton, and Junípero Serra. In lively profiles written for contemporary readers, Ghezzi chronicles their journeys of faith and their contributions to the vitality of the Church. The voices of the saints resound throughout the book, in quotations drawn from their own writings, the works of biographers, and the recollections of witnesses. Readers can use Voices of the Saints in several different ways. Organized alphabetically, it serves as a helpful, easy-to-use dictionary. It also features a day-by-day numbering system, ideal for daily readings; notations at the end of each entry, enabling the exploration of the lives in historical order; an index that highlights particular themes (including the intriguing "Porcupine Saints"), and a calendar of saints' days. A fascinating look at disparate and unusual lives-each one a rich source of illumination, inspiration, encouragement, and motivation-along with prayers and meditations, Voices of the Saints is a valuable companion for members of Catholic, Episcopal, and other traditional churches, and an enlightening introduction to the saints for general readers.

Book Dunstan

  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2023-01-01
  • ISBN : 0227179269
  • Pages : 278 pages

Download or read book Dunstan written by Douglas Dales and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St Dunstan of Canterbury (909-88) was the central figure in the development of English church and society after the death of King Alfred. Douglas Dales traces Dunstan’s life beginning with his education at the great monastery of Glastonbury of which he became abbot. He was a central figure at the court of the kings of Wessex but was banished, partly because of his hostility to the king’s mistresses, and went to exile in Flanders. After his return he was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. During the twenty-eight years of his primacy he carried out one of the major developments of the century, the reformation of the monasteries. This book aims to examine him not merely as a prelate and royal advisor, but to see other aspects of his life: his skills as a craftsman caused him to be adopted as the patron saint of goldsmiths; some of his work as calligrapher and artist survives to this day; the coronation service which he drew up still lies at the heart of this service for English monarchs today; he was famed for his musical skills; above all, the sanctity of his name and the fame of his miracles kept Dunstan’s memory alive. Douglas Dales’ re-examination of the life and times of Dunstan sets his achievements against the social and religious background of the day, at a time when new forces were emerging that would shape the future of England and the English Church for centuries to come.

Book The Island of Avalon Volume 1

Download or read book The Island of Avalon Volume 1 written by Francis Lot and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La matiere de Bretagne is a name given collectively to the body of medieval literature and legendary material associated with Great Britain; especially King Arthur and his knights and their association to the Grail. It is the link between the Grail stories and the legends of both King Arthur and Joseph of Arimathea and their connection to Glastonbury, the Island of Avalon, which is central to this investigation. The legend of King Arthur at Glastonbury is primarily derived from Geoffrey of Monmouth's mention of King Arthur's arrival at the Island of Avalon after his fatal fight with Mordred. It is the later bogus disinterment of King Arthur's manufactured grave at Glastonbury, which establishes Glastonbury's synonymy with Avalon. This volume sets out to show how the abbot of Glastonbury, Henry Blois, used Geoffrey of Monmouth as a nom de plume and concocted the epic tale from Brutus to Arthur which is now known as the 'History of the Kings of Britain' and was responsible for composing the Prophecies of Merlin"
