Book excerpt: In the 1880s, the Central Pacific Railroad labored through the rugged upper Sacramento River canyon to connect California with the far northwest. Where the canyon's steep walls open up to a view of snowcapped Mount Shasta, a railroad switching yard, a depot, a roundhouse, a turntable, and repair shops were constructed. Surrounded by virgin timber, rushing waters, and dramatic geologic formations, this railhead camp--named for a Canadian collier--grew. Completion of the rail line brought commerce and growth as timber was harvested and streams were prospected for gold. Visitors were, and continue to be, drawn by the pure mountain air, scenic beauty, healing mineral waters, hunting, and world-class trout fishing. Though facing many obstacles, including storms, fires, and floods, the town thrived. Incorporated in 1909, Dunsmuir became the headquarters for the Southern Pacific Railroad's fabled Shasta Division in 1916. Today Dunsmuir is known as California's Historic Railroad Town and is recognized in the National Register of Historic Places.

Book excerpt: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN a present-day lady lawyer wakes up in an 1890s mountain cabin with a grizzly-faced recluse, then learns she is there to defend him against a murder charge? Entertainment lawyer KATHERINE MARSHALL views the whole idea of time-travel as pure Hollywood escapism, but she figures the only solution to her bizarre predicament is to right a century-old mistake: the hanging of an innocent man. FLYNT AVERY, a student of ancient Indian mysticism, finds himself believing in the claims of this fascinating woman he calls Kate—that she has somehow come from another time. But when he learns that his acquittal means she will return to her life in 1992, Flynt would rather lose his life to a hangman's noose than lose the woman he loves.

Book The Untrue Story of You

Download or read book The Untrue Story of You written by Bryan Hubbard and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Untrue Story of You, Bryan Hubbard presents a powerful, groundbreaking theory explaining who we really are, how our relationship to our past affects us and how we can finally find true healing. In the pages of this book, you will discover that 'you' are actually made up of Three Selves, or time-bodies – past, present and potential - and that these three distinct entities send out energetic pulses, or waves, that interact to create your experience of life. As you move through life, experiences you never fully understood from your past begin to weigh you down, causing you to respond in the present with anxiety and fear without knowing why. As this pattern repeats itself, it can drag you into depression or addictive behaviours that are seemingly out of your control. Sharing his own moving story of overcoming the painful experiences of his childhood, Bryan teaches you how to heal the negative patterns you have created in your life, and, through a 21-day programme, become the real 'you' – the child you once were who could see the world as it really is, an unfolding miracle in the present moment.

Book Applications of X ray Computed Tomography in the Geosciences

Download or read book Applications of X ray Computed Tomography in the Geosciences written by Florias Mees and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2003 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a technique that allows non-destructive imaging and quantification of internal features of objects. X-ray CT reveals differences in density and atomic composition and can therefore be used for the study of porosity, the relative distribution of contrasting solid phases and the penetration of injected solutions. In this book, various applications of X-ray CT in the geosciences are illustrated by papers covering a wide range of disciplines, including petrology, soil science, petroleum geology, geomechanics and sedimentology.
